Walters, BASEBALL Having a nucleus of 10 veterans returning from the '55 baseball squad, Coach Salerno busily prepared the Rams for the coming season. After two tuneup games, the Rams faced their first league opposition in Malverne. Behind the fine pitching of Howie Wiener, they easily defeated the Mules. Malverne, however, returned the compliment by beating the Rams by that identical score in a second match. Two easy wins over hapless East Meadow followed as the Rams went on to win 5 straight league games. Wantagh brought the winning streak to an end by beating West Hempstead 5-2, but the Rams got revenge by pounding out a 10-2 victory in the return meeting. After beating East Rockaway twice, the Rams opened up a two game series with the tough Lynbrook squad. In a brilliant pitching duel between Duke Molter and Lefty Lehrhoff, the Rams eked out a 1-0 decision. At this stage of the season Mal- verne and the Rams were deadlocked for first place. Both teams took their final games as West Hempstead trounced Lynbrook and Malverne beat East Meadow. A playoff game for the league title was arranged and the Rams went down to a heart-breaking 2-1 defeat. Z 11111 v . ,. ' l if I F 1. Q? Tumer, S. Nelson, M. Poppe, D. Jagger.
