VARSITY FOOTBALL 1956 W1th the return of seven letter men from the l955 football squad the Rams football outlook was brrght Under the able dxrectfon of Coach Salerno and hrs assistant Mr Robert jahelka the team rounded qulckly mto shape as rt pre pared for 1tS opener wrth Levlttown Rams blank Levxttown The Rams struck hard and fast and scored two qu1ck touchdowns to lead 13 O at the half W1th Ram passmg and runnmg combmat1on clxcklng they scored agam rn the second half coastmg to an openmg 20 0 uctory Malverne upsets Rams A fourth quarter Ram drxve died on the two-yard lme w1th less than three mlnutes to play and Malverne squeezed out a 14-13 upset wln The Rams re gardmg Malverne too lxghtly found themselves fighting an uphlll battle all afternoon only to have thelr bld to score and wm the game dle sxx feet from the goal lme Rams stun Lynbrook Smce the start of the season the Rams were poxntrng toward Lyn brook As they took the field more fight and hustle was shown by these 1956 Rams than any other team before them The Rams struck hard and quickly took a commandmg 13 0 halftime lead Stxll full of fight the Rams contmued cl1ck mg and scored agam Lynbrooks rally was to no avall The Rams 1n wmnmg 20 13 became the first West Hempstead football team to beat Lynbrook Rams squeeze past Long Beach The Ram offense clxcked beautxfully m the first half, and the Rams took the lead 7 0 In the second half Long Beach came fighting back Only the brxl llant lme play by the Rams forward wall pre served vxctory as Long Beach continually threat ened West Hempsteads goal Thrs vlctory over beatmg ever sustamed by a West Hempstead West Hempstead team Rams romp 38 O W1th Coach Salerno tak mg pxty on weak East Rockaway and substltut mg freely the Rams scored srx touchdowns The vlctory over East Rockaway was the fourth of the season guaranteelng the hrst wmnlng season Garden Crty trounces Rams 216 Out classed all the way the Rams were no match for a strong Garden Cxty club Behmd 14 0 at halftxme the Rams were never even m the ball game Rams romped 42 7 The Westbury Hxgh grldders seekxng revenge on West Hempstead got all they could hope for as they unmercrfully overpowered the Rams Long Beach was also the first registered by a football team The only brlght spot for the Rams was a 62 yard drlve for thexr lone touchdown The Rams can proudly look back at the past season as the most successful m the schools brref hlstory Although future teams wlll have better records, the 1956 squad was the first to have a wmnmg season Outsxde of the last two games rn whxch the Rams were slmply out classed thls eleven has made all West Hemp stead proud Speclal congratulatmons should go to our Head Coach Nxcholas Salerno and h1s asslstant Robert jahelka who ably gulded the Rams throughout the season Also worthy of much pralse IS john Schaeffer who was chosen for the Most Valuable Player award by the stu dent council and who was glven Honorable Mentlon ln Newsday Dazly News and Press All Scholastxc teams Fmally the whole West Hempstead Hrgh School football team should be commended for xts fine showmg and hard work throughout the season , . s y ' .W ' . . . . The little Rams won two, lost three and tied one game. Although their rec- ord was not very impressive, they showed tremendous hustle and desire. The nucleus of the team consited of ends Greenberg and Shriftman, center Mastriano, and backs Messer, Miskov- sky, Thorson, Demasco, Galgano, and DiBernardo. Congratulations are due Mr. Ralph Foster who ably guided and directed the future West Hempstead Ram varsity in gaining valuable experi- ence. Ill
