Our athletic teams, hardly the best In the beginning, now have emerged as Champions. A Student Council, giving us a voice In our own government has given us Memorable events-like the Sock Hop And the traditional holiday season Snow Ball. Events and activities now crowd our days- Events like Senior-Frosh Day-where dolls and various colored lollypops Made even the hardiest Senior's stomach Turn just a little. Student Faculty Night brings to mind The valiant effort of teachers In the attempt to beat a top-notch varsity team. Cheerleaders, Ramettes and Rumettes All added to the fun- Where Comedy was the keyword. JV BASKETBALL Getting off to a slow start the West Hempstead JV Basketball team found themselves too late in the season. They finished with a sub-par record of 7-12. The most impressive victories were over Wan- tagh, East Rockaway, and Mineola, games in which the Rams showed great promise. Barry MacArthur led the team in scoring with a 9-point average. Round- ing out the first team were Winston Jagger, Dick Gwydir, john Morris, and Bruce Blauberg. Mr. Hen- dricks should be congratulated for his fine handling of the team in preparing them for future varsity berths. FRESHMAN SCHEDULE Division Ave. Massapequa ...... Hewlett ....... FRESHMAN BASKETBALL The little Rams of '57 assure a bright basketball fu- ture for West Hempstead. Under the able guidance of Mr. Stauder, the Rams won all but two of their games. They finished the season with five straight victories and came in second in their league. Outside of the losses suffered at the hands of Hewlett, the talented freshmen rolled over their opponents with comparative ease. The team exhibited tremendous desire and teamwork during the whole season, and no one individual was responsible for the success of the team. The starting five consisted of 6'2 Dave Greenberg, who led the team in scoring with an eleven-point aver- age, rebounder Tony Demascog playmaker Jackie In- singag Sal Alfano, and Allan Kafka. Others rounding out the squad are Steve Baral, Richard Miskovsky, Dick Hoffman, Steve Galgano, Marco DeBernardo, Vinnie Sena, Steve Bloom, Jim Messer, and Richard Peskin. This hustling group of freshmen represents some of the best young talent West Hempstead has ever possessed. Congratulations to Mr. Stauder and to his fine team for their outstanding performance. Walters, BASEBALL Having a nucleus of 10 veterans returning from the '55 baseball squad, Coach Salerno busily prepared the Rams for the coming season. After two tuneup games, the Rams faced their first league opposition in Malverne. Behind the fine pitching of Howie Wiener, they easily defeated the Mules. Malverne, however, returned the compliment by beating the Rams by that identical score in a second match. Two easy wins over hapless East Meadow followed as the Rams went on to win 5 straight league games. Wantagh brought the winning streak to an end by beating West Hempstead 5-2, but the Rams got revenge by pounding out a 10-2 victory in the return meeting. After beating East Rockaway twice, the Rams opened up a two game series with the tough Lynbrook squad. In a brilliant pitching duel between Duke Molter and Lefty Lehrhoff, the Rams eked out a 1-0 decision. At this stage of the season Mal- verne and the Rams were deadlocked for first place. Both teams took their final games as West Hempstead trounced Lynbrook and Malverne beat East Meadow. A playoff game for the league title was arranged and the Rams went down to a heart-breaking 2-1 defeat. Z 11111 v . ,. ' l if I F 1. Q? Tumer, S. Nelson, M. Poppe, D. Jagger. TRACK The Rams got off to a Hying start by trouncing Beth- page and Freeport, as they dominated all events. Compet- ing in its first triangular meet of the season, the Rams defeated Malverne and Wantagh handily. A close win over Hewlett followed. The first defeat of the campaign was suffered at the hands of Hempstead and Southside in a second triangular meet. After romping Uniondale, the Rams lost a thriller to Lynbrook. Competing in the last triangular meet of the season, the Rams downed Massa- pequa and Hewlett. In the Section Three meet held at West Hempstead, the Rams were unable to defend their title as Lynbrook took it away from them easily. The steady performers all season were Bob O'Brien, star sprinter who led the team in scoring and who received the Most Valuable Player awardg Fred Homer, hurler and sprinterg Harvey Blaustein and John Boccone, shotputtersg high-jumper Billy Vincentg and miler John Walters. Our fine relay team consited of O'Brien, Vincent, Fischetti, Homer, Ainbinder, and Chris- tiansen. It was a very sucessful season for the Rams, and Mr. Jahelka deserves much praise for his fine handling of the team. Q. 6' cz . i , -f Sf! u mums fl ' E. , . P . . K' L -.,y I' A 1. U. ,121 '.
