AUSTRIA '78 Memories of the snow-covered Austrian Alps will always be present in the minds of the WHHS band and bandfront members. The candy sales, hoagie sales, paperdrives, block party, raffles, and knocking on doors finally paid off as the Band and Band Booster's reached their final goal of S50,000. During their stay overseas, the WHHS Band performed in five concerts--three in Seefeld, Austria, one in Innsbruck, Austria, and one in Kematon, Austria. They were in Austria as participants in the Seefeld International Music Festival. All the practices paid off when the band received a second place award in the competition. They were tied with a band from Michigan. The bands were judged on a one to five ranking basis but none of the participants received first place. After a nine-hour delay in Philadelphia International Airport, and a brief stop in Newfoundland, the band was on their way to an interesting nine-day stay in Europe. Once they landed in Munich, Germany, they were transported by bus to Seefeld where they were housed in four resort hotels. The various foods and picturesque houses of Austria provided everyone with a thrill. The snow-covered mountain peaks were one-of-a-kind. Rehearsals were held in the Olympia Center, a hall built for the 1976 Olympic games, which housed an indoor-outdoor heated swimming pool, The band also visited other parts of Austria including Salzburg, Innsbruck, and Kematon. They visited various sites in Germany and Italy including King Ludwig's Castle, Brenner Pass, and the Bassilia Church. The WHHS entourage reportedly made a big hit with the townspeople of Seefeld because it was the largest band and the only band performing with a bandfront. They particularly liked the short skirts of the uniformed girls which were in sharp contrast to the peasant dirndls worn by the Austrian natives. Drum majorette Beth Schmauch received a large bouquet of pine cones and mountain flowers from the mayor of Kematon. The band also received a penant to be placed on its flag from that community. On their final day in Seefeld, band director, James Hardy, presented the key to West Hazleton and a scroll from the borough council to the burgomeister of that community. The band departed form Munich Airport and made a brief stop in Shannon, Ireland before returning home. The traditional foods, friendly people, mountain tops, and beautiful homes of Austria will long be remembered in the minds of the WHHS band. It was truly a dream come true, a fairy tale trip! James Hardy presenting the key to W. Hazleton and scroll Band members packing prior tp trip to WHHS, from boro council to burgomeister of Seefeld. 42 i Lig..,,. .-gsfQ'J!'.f 1 Q. , ixffl 'i V uh i... gf, Departure from schooi on June 25, 1978 -. i ...Q Q cl -,.. , . We can't erase the memories of days and years gone by, For all those countless visions will never fade or die. The visions of our growing and learning how to live, Along with understanding and knowing how to give. The laughter and the good times that never seemed to end, And all those priceless moments we shared with each good friend. The daily trials of right and wrong that we had struggled through, Along with meeting deep desires and disappointments too. The times of every hardship and times of shedding tears, Along with dreams to guide our hopes and those to hide our fears. We started out to reach a goal, to make ourselves worthwhile, But didn't stop to realize that life's just not a smile. For many times our troubles grew and life seemed at an end, But this was when we learned the truth and lost the word pretend So now we gather all we've learned and set out on life's way, Knowing that maturity will help us face each day. For every past experience has helped us all a bit, And so recalling yesterday - lt looks like we made it! By:Lori Hartranft ,1- LQOK5 UK! WF N405 X7 , ' 1 fa X a f - Q -X an , f ?
