Members of the West Hazleton Joint School District represent the communities of Conyngham, Sugarloaf Township, West Hazleton, East Union Township and North Union Township. Members of the board repre- sent leading citizens of those communities, who give of their time and effort to see that we are provided with the best possible education. These men have proven to be more than just school directors . The students in their respective communities have known them personally and have on many occasions called on them for advice and counsel, which was cheerfully and capably given. To the Board of Education, we of the Class of 1963, assure you that your leadership, counsel and outstanding efforts in securing for us a well- rounded education, has been appreciated. The American Legion Award was presented to Janet Astleford and John Bartko with Carol Stanalonis and Carl Schneider as the runners up. This year we won the Public- Parochial Basketball League with an undefeated season. Our Freshmen Day finally arrived on May 20th. The theme Television, successfully provided a most enjoyable program. That night we danced to the music of the Four Sharps. This concluded our Freshmen year. Sophomores 1960-1961 This year we became part of the senior high. We started off with a 7, 2, 1 football record. The highlight of the seasonwas our victory over Hazleton High School, when we brought home not only the Victory Trophy, but the first Sportsmanship Trophy. We were also successful in winning the Anthracite League Basketball Championship witha 20-3 record. On April 14th, we celebrated Sophomore Day which carried the theme Movies Are Better Than Ever. The annual Sophomore Dance was held that night in the gym with music by the Kingsmen. An undefeated baseball season closed the Sophomore chapter in our senior high life. Juniors 1961-1962 Our Junior year began, athletic wise, with a 5, 4 football record followed by an outstanding, victorious basketball season. On December 8th, we presented our Junior Class Play entitled A1most Eighteen to a full house. Our long awaited class rings arrived and we became full-fledged members of the school. Orbiting the Earth was our Junior Class Day theme, the date was May 11th. That night we had an enjoy- able evening, dancing to the music of the Glentels. Once again a great baseball season concluded another year in our book. Seniors 1962-1963 The first big event in this, our last year was Senior Day November 16th. Our theme, The Stars of 63, provided a wide range of talent for the program. The Glentels, once again, provided the music for a most enjoyable evening. In this our senior year we won permanent possession of the Sportsmanship Trophy and boasted a 6, 3 football record. At the annual Win or Weep Dance, Sonia Petruncio and Michael Christina were crowned Mr. and Miss West Hazleton High School. This year our Senior class presented the play, A Rocket in His Pocket, which proved to be a profitable and enjoyable production. We are looking forward to our Senior Prom in June and Commencement Exercises. The night of Commencement will mark the end of the best and most enjoyable days in our book of senior high life. ll JANET A. ASTLEFORD JANET A. ASTLEFORD Janet NORALYNNE BAINBRJDGE Il l MICHAEL R. We've spent such happy hours, Within these dear old walls, I We d love to spend so many more But now our life's work calls. We leave this High School dear, To sail on the sea of Life. We'l1 meet success or failure, And share our joys and strife. And now, dear classmates true, Farewell to one and all. We shall not meet again, In these dear halls next fall. By Kathleen Judge Poet of The Class of 1963 33 Class Prophecy After traveling for 15 years we finally returned to our old hometown of West Hazleton. We were told that a part of West Hazleton had been turned into a regular Cape Canaveral. As soon as we checked into our hotel, that was managed by Richie Keppel, we took a super-speed bus to the rocket site. Our driver was Richie Wojcik. Pat Hopeck and Gail Heller were to be our official guides on the tour. First we came to the newsroom. Some of the reporters in the room were: Cheryl Campbell, Charlene Dalpiaz and Linda Stauffer. Next stop was the laboratory, where the scientists Dave Dusheck, Dan Guydish, John Chabalko, and Dale Krause were busy working on new fuel for the rocket. Walking over to Wolfe's Coffee Shop run by Barry and Cathy, we bumped into Carl Marsiglio, Bob Slabinski, Jackie Hnat, and Jimmy Kersikofski who were busy assembling the next rocket. In the coffee shop, we were served by two waitresses, Linda Sauers and Judy Warner. We found that Carl Schneider and Lewis Teter were the next two astronauts. After eating, we went into a building where Nancy Stecker, Sandy Sokoloski, and Janet Astleford, were busy trying to concentrate food for the astronauts. Then we went to the recreation room. There, we saw John Bartko, Joe Sundra, and Mark Hoefling trying to teach Barbara Bauer, Joan Casperovich, and Ginny Bosak boys basketball during their lunch break. Mike Christina, Mickey Ziminski, Rodney Meikrantz, and Jimmy Oswald were discussing football of course. The next stop on our tour was the base hospital, where we saw Betty Jean Stoll, was the supervising nurse. Busy working on the floor were: Donna Ritz, Diane Swetz, Ruth Molo- toris, Judy Schweitzer, Pat Bunk, and Pat Urban. In the kitchen we found Paulette Vetter, the chief dietian. A few of the doctors on duty were: Charles Seliga, Eddie Mehalick, and John Koval. Two of the struggling interns were Fred Dute and Eddie Drosdick. We went to the X-Ray Technicians Room, and found Bethy Phillips, Nancy Poniatowski, and Sonia Petruncio working on their poor victim, Jon Houser. It seems that he injured his finger pushing the button that sends the rocket into orbit. Our next stop took us to the tailor shop where Karen Kreitzberger and Jeanette Bogaczyk who were styling the space suits for our next astronauts. While walking to the next building, we overheard Lois Dennison, Carol Stanalonis, and Lois Ulshafer, our girl engineers, discussing the plans for the new rocket. Our last stop was made at the base office. There we saw Antoinette Fazio as head typist, and Marion Yesenofski as stenographer. Mary Bodnar, Theresa DeMelfi, and Veronica Cheslock were bookkeepers. After our exciting tour of the missile base, renewing old acquaintances and reliving many wonderful memories, we returned to our hotel for the night. We feel that our class has done exceptionally well in the past 15 years. We sincerely hope that in years to come they will find an even greater amount of success and happiness.
