Q , ' Q ' l I I . I l ' ' . . . . , i I 1 Q ' Q ' From a Speech of GEORGE WASHINGTON Before Congress Knowledge is in every country the surest basis of public happiness. ln one in which the measures of government receive their impressions so immediately from the sense of the community as in ours, it is proportionately essential. To the security of a free constitution it contributes in various ways: By convincing those who are intrusted with the public administration that every valuable end of government is best answered by the enlightened confidence of the people, and by teaching the people themselves to know and value their own rights, to discern and provide against invasions of them, to distinguish between oppression and the necessary exercise of lawful authority, between burdens proceeding from a disregard to their convenience and those resulting from the inevitable exigencies of society, to discriminate the spirit of liberty from that of licentiousness, cherishing the first, avoiding the last, and uniting a speedy but temperate vigilance against encroachments with an inviolable respect for law. We accept this as the reason for establishing a West Hazleton High School and maintaining it over years, and feel confident that such an institution will continue to press forward toward the magnificent goal of universal knowledge, understanding, and peace. FOOTBALL TEAM The usual bad luck connected with the number l3 overtook West Hazleton and heaped its burden on us during the thirteenth season, which was last year. Running a small average of fifteen points per game, we battled through to only one decisive victory in the entire campaign. Marked with bad luck and no breaks, the record as a whole was below parg however, the fighting spirit of every season manifested itself in frenzied attempts to break through to victory. The team's graduating seniors are Captain Jack Lapinsky, Ed Points Walter Pavloski, Elmer Karshner, Red Points, Joseph Radai, Louie Stein- man, Jack Schumacher, Al Kaminski, Harry Gicking, Bernard Koskultis, and Lawrence Quinn. These boys played a hard season under sad circumstances Though the record be low, the boys were great.
