A welcoming glow reaches out from him to each and every individual in school as well as in our community. Through our years at West Haven High we all came to know he was there to share both hardships and joys. His concern for the well-bein g of every student extends beyond 1:20. lt extends until each student is content! ln spite of his busy schedule, and the constant pressure of problems, a warm smile awaits those who encounter him. As we bring our high school years to a close, we, the class of 1983, would like to thank Mr. Purdy for caring as a friend and counselor. PLEASE STAND FOR THE PLEDGE OI 5 QQBE QRS I Q Annmarie D'Aurio lst Vice President CLASS OFFICERS Patricia Kelly President Shelly Recchia 2nd Vice President Rosemarie Raucci Kimberly Cerillo Secretary Treasurer CLASS HISTCRY On September l, l980, a new group of shy and nervous sophomores entered W.H.H.S. for the first time. As every class previously, we were ordered into the auditorium for the opening day speech. We were given rules and regulations and assigned to our homerooms. At this time, the best and most exciting three years of our lives began. With the guidance of our advisors, Mr. Jeffords and Mr. Hill, we held our first class officer election, the winners were as follows: President - Rocco D'Eugenio, Vice President -- Annmarie D'Aurio, Secretary - MaryBeth DiCerbo, Treasurer - Kim Cerillo. These four people would be the first leaders of the class of 83, Our class started out with a fundraising concert NRBQ, which didn't go over well and put us in debt. We sold MSM's for what seemed like forever. ln November our class was involved in Homecoming week, with sophomore representatives, Joe Gentile and Kelly Nebor. The remainder of our first year rolled along smoothly but the class was still young and did not have the spirit that would have contributed to a more suc- cessful year. We entered our Junior year with a little more confidence. We were no longer the lowlife of the school! Our officers were President - Maryann Milano, Co-Vice Presidents - Ann- marie D'Aurio and Shelly Recchia, Secretary - MaryBeth DiCerbo, Treasurer - Kim Cerillo. With the beginning of a new year came the reality that our class was in serious financial trouble, we had to recover the money we lost with the NRBO. concert. The entire class worked unrelentingly. We had extensive support from the school faculty and the community during our fund ralsers, thus we overcame our debt. ln November, Homecomingweek was held. The results of the Junior election were Joe Gentile and Kelly Nebor. Soon it was Christmas. We enjoyed our vacation knowing when we returned we would begin working on specific plans for the Junior Prom. The arrival of our rings in January was a celebrated event, but our thoughts were quickly brought back to making decisions for the prom. Our committee was large and it became difficult to make group decisions. Not everyone could be pleased therefore, it was to our ad- vantage that we were an understanding group. We completed our work. Our prom was on April 23, the theme was appropriately The First Time, We danced all night to the music of Moonrise. The evening was a bit hectic. Some famous quotes were, Where's the other photographer, Where is the prom com- mittee? and, I ordered shrimp, not prime rib. In lieu of this, our prom was a great success. From that night on everyone has been anticipating our Senior Prom. Late in April, senior class officer campaigning began. The candidates were, for President - MaryBeth DiCerbo, Patty Kelly, and Rocco D'Eugenio, Vice President - Mary Bacchiocchi, Nate Cotton, Annmarie D'Aurio, and Shelly Recchia, Secretary - Lori Ludiviconi, Rose Raucci, Annmarie Tavoliero, Treasurer - Kim Cerillo and Anita Aportria. The competition in this election was great. Every candidate wanted the position they were running for badly. Because of a slight mishap, two elections were necessary: the first election was void. The results of the second election were, President - Patty Kelly, a tie for Vice President - Annmarie D'Aurio and Shelly Recchia, Secretary -- Rose Raucci, Treasurer - Kim Cerillo. The above students would lead our final year at West Haven High. On September 2, we entered the building to begin our last first day of school, Everyone had a case of senioritis, but once we became reassociated with the school and each other, everything fell into place. The first big event of the year was the Halloween Dance, which was held on Saturday, October 30, in our own cafe from 8:00-12:00 p.m. It was a great success, many students attended, appearing as pac-men, lips, monsters, playboy bunnies and others. November passed quickly and soon came time for our Homecoming week. It began with elections. There were many nominees but only eight students could win. The results were announced at the pep rally, which was an unusual one: it was the first time it was held in our auditorium. Third runners up were Kathy DeGoursey and Sal Festa, second runners up - Pam Williams and Jimmy Carney, first runners up - Lisa Laoue and Angel Robles, King and Queen, for the third year in a row, Joe Gentile and Kelly Nebor. Although this is not a complete history of our class, it does summarize many im- portant events and calls to mind memories of good times which will never be forgotten. Our three years at Westie High have been a great experience and have taught us how to love, laugh, take leadership, and most of all, how to care about our fellow classmates and their futures. We are grateful to all who have supported us. As we continue our lives we can always reminisce on the years we spent together, and the lasting friendships we've made. R. Mr. Bob Jeffords IN APPRECIATIO We the class of 1983 would like to express our appreciation to Mr. Bob Jeffords and Mr. Fred Hill. They both worked diligently to make our highschool years successful. Although there were many good times some of our undertakings were unsuccessful, but throughout our years, Mr. Jeffords and Mr. Hill were there to contribute new ideas and help us to make the right decisions. As time went on, we learned to cope with these decisions thanks to Mr. Hill and Mr. Jeffords. Without this guidance our senior year would not have been the memorable one it was. As we bring it to a close, on behalf of the senior class, we'd like to sincerely thank the two men who made it all possible. , 'H l'd like to express my sincere and deep appreciation to all of you who have borne so much upon your shoulders. Certainly, the class officers of each year deserve a lot of the credit. They served to set an example, and to them goes a heartfelt thanks for many, many jobs well-done. The Prom Committees of each year have also done an outstanding job of bringing together talent and energy to assure that the many events and tasks were accomplished so commendably. Those of you who gave your support when it was needed, did an excellent job. Our gratitude extends faculty, administration, and to the Town, who gave time, effort, and advice so wholeheartedly. It has been an enjoyable and pleasurable three years, and I hope that the experience has been for you what it has been for me . . . something to remember and cherish. The representatives are led by executive officers who campaign throughout the school and are elected by the entire student body. Once the governing format is in place, the student government prepares an agenda which reflects what the student body wants. The student government is not in an advisorial role at West Haven but rather in a support role. Plans to improve instruction and course selection, plans to improve the aesthetics of the building, plans to present students with alternatives in their social lives, and plans to enhance specific areas of progress through fundraiser for gifts are all dealt with on a routine basis. Student Government is but an infant in its development at West Haven yet it is growing fast and with strength. Without it there is no student voice. Without it there is no living example of democracy. With it, the potential of all elements of the educational experience are enhanced. is wL :ss if .si ss Y -se. , .t.-- Q .mis T. . ..t 1' -gsm M .rw -Q, lst row - M. Mazza-Vice Pres., P. No honor or responsibility conferred by the school excels that represented by the National Honor Society, Other honors at the disposal of the school are only partial in the sense that they recognize specialized ability, skill, or talent, but this Society looks upon education as a total product measured by the four dimensions of life: character, scholar ship leadership, and service. The West Haven Chapter stresses community service through commitments such as the weekly High School Hap- penings newspaper column in the West Haven News, the Thanksgiving Food Drive, the Toy Drive, and working with other service organizations. Each year begins with a fund-raiser which enables the cluding setting up the Christmas tree, Christmas Roses, and Secret Admirer's Carnations in February. Tapping of new members who meet the eligibility criteria begins the Induc- tion process. The lnduction and the formal reception follow- ing the ceremony conclude the busiest part of the year's ac- tivities. Let me stick this in your head! W Boy, ljust love Fridays! Wejust love our gold! Like my pearly whites?? The Unity Club held its organizational meeting in late September and elected its officers for the 82-83 school year. They are President, Lenore Lewis, Vice-President Gerard Smart, Secretary Tanya Wichard, Treasurer Saleena Weeks and Parliamentarian Andre Rogers. We began the year by having two successful fund raisers Qdancesj at the Carrigan Middle School. The annual talent show, held last spring on March 4, was one of the culminating activities of the club. Although the annual trip to Washington, D. C. will not be taken this year, the club did venture to Philadelphia for an interesting and fun-filled Memorial Day weekend. We hope to continue our tradition of traveling with more trips in the future. John Travolta, look out . . . Boys' andw vftate v 2 I3 G mxilgj-ifw Junior Prom Committee Left to Right R. Pimer S. This has been a year of tremendous change and growth for the Rostrum. The staff and advisors began the year with a very fundamental goal - create a vital school newspaper with an improved image. To accomplish this, the staff decided to increase the number of publications on a rigid monthly basis. Previous- ly, there have been 2 to 3 a year - this year 8 issues are scheduled. More student involvement was accomplished by having all work done in school, including word process- ing, layout and printing, Finally, there was a concerted ef- fort to upgrade the quality of the Rostrum with in writing and in format - an effort which has been successful! Though it was a year of change and hard work, everyone involved with this school publication has experienced a tremendous sense of pride and accomplishment as a reward. in . ,S TY? . far , A flf Zz, ' ' A . . Led by the dynamic duo of Kathy Quirk and Mary Petrucci, the business staff contacted hundreds of potential supporters. The result was an unprecedented increase in publication size for this year's edition. General Editors Tracey Lutters and Vicki Forbes began collecting literary articles in October and Art Editor Kirstin Wilkes coordinated the submission of art and photographic material. lnvaluable assistance was offered by poster-maker Jennifer Sanford. A more demanding deadline of February lst did not discourage the number of submissions from students and the West Whims philosophy of encouraging all students to work on the editorial staff or participate by submitting material was realized by one of the largest staffs and number of articles in recent years. All material submitted was graded by staff members who made the final decision on acceptance for publication. All editors were involved in the layout and planning as well as the pre-publication meetings with our publisher. The staff would like to thank the school administration and Board of Education for their unstinting moral and financial support which made it possible to produce one of the most impressive West Whims editions in recent years. lst Row M. This is specifically designed for students enrolled in marketing and management. All students enrolled in marketing and management throughout the nation are eligible for membership in their local chapter of DECA, their state association of DECA and National DECA. Each chapter elects its own student officers, and the marketing and management teacher serves as the chapter advisor. The elected officers for 1983 were: President Karen Choronzy, Vice-President Patty Dixon, Secretary Lori Ludoviconi, Store Manager Nicole Nardini, Historian Patty Corradino, Sales Project Co-ordinator Lisa Launder, and Advisor Mr. Ronald A. Stancil. This year the West Haven chapter of DECA was proud to have Teresa Haze serve as District V President, for the Connecticut Association of the Distributive Education Clubs of America. Teresa was in charge of the eleven schools within the district. The conferences, which DECA participated in, took our students to places such as New Haven, Hartford, Washington D.C., Niagra Falls, N,Y., and Canada. This year we are planning to attend national conferences in New Orleans. Some activities this year included: the 6th Annual Career Exploration Day, anti-shoplifting survey and project, the Phillips Petroleum free enterprise project, 7-LIP MDA Field Day, the initiation and installation banquet, DECA Christmas party, Pepsi Learn and Earn project, the successful operation of the school store 'The Devil's Den', and every conceivable fundraiser from MSM's to E.T. DECA has provided its members with an opportunity to serve as leaders and followers, and provides an opportunity for them to receive state and national recognition. 85 LIBR RY AIDES B. Row, P. Could it work? . . . Would it work? . . . Could we earn the respect of l ll bandmembers? . . .and most of all one Mr. Crabtree. Our senior year actually began back in June of 1982 where in one week of rigorous marching auditions and interviews Sally Ferko, Cathy Bavolar, and Geraldine Cashman were chosen as drum majorettes, and Lisa Laoue as Devilette Captain. Hence, began annual summer rehearsals and gradually our so called herd began to mold into a band. In July the Band elected Emillio Grillo, President to head a 21 member band council whose immediate task was to select a performing tour desitnation, After hours of council meetings and planning, Bermuda was a unanimous choice for the band's 1983 performing tour. As the months progressed we watched our final year diminished rapidly but still remember we had attained our ultimate goal . . . Becoming the greatest band in the land. BA D LEADERS L, Laoue S. Our goal in the 1982-83 school year has not changed. Each year we endeavor to present to the public diversified, educational and entertaining pro- ductions. This year we began with a light musical comedy called Little Mary Sunshine. The Seniors involved with the show were: Tracey Carey, Rocco D'Eugenio, Denise Hurlburt, Philip Lapre, Maria Burwell, and Emilio Grillo. During this writing auditions were being held for the spring production The Effects of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-Moon-Marigolds which is a Pulitzer Prize winning play. For the past three years our organization has belonged to the Connecticut Drama Association. We have participated in workshops, attended other high school productions and twice completed in the CDA's spring festival. As director of theatre workshop it has been my objective to provide the students with an opportunity to display their talents, gain, experience, learn about live theatre, and have an enjoyable time while doing it. They receive a certificate now required by the state of Connecticut, with which they can get a job in caring for pa- tients at the entry level. Many have used the skills they have ac- quired in this program for full time employ- ment, for part time jobs while pursuing fur- ther education, and as a stepping stone to related professions. Our 1982 football season was not as successful as years in the past. Although the talent and drive to be winners was there, we faltered to a 3 and 7 record which is not a record to which the Westies are ac- customed. Many of our games were not only losses in the physical sense, but also in the emotional sense. The squad slowly lost our pride in being West Haven Football players, although winning is certainly easier and nicer, both emotionally and socially, we realized that we gained valuable lessons in endurance and fortitude which will benefit us in the future. We the seniors of the West Haven Football team would like to sincerely thank Mr. Tom Hunt who is leaving coaching to assume new responsibilities as Athletic Director, for all his time and effort that were put into these past years. This year the girls held two football pep rallies and one Fall Sports pep rally for the entire school in November. The winter months are always the busiest. The squad of twenty is divided in half for hockey and basketball games, usually requiring the girls to attend 2-3 games per week. A basketball and hockey pep rally was held in January. The remaining four starting varsity members were all first year players, sophomore, Don- na Defaranos, and juniors Karen Haiday, Celena Flowers, and Michaele Milano. The season started out with a bang, as the team came back with from a two game deficeit against Lee, to win the next three games and take the match. The road from here, however, took another turn and the agony of defeat became a reality. This is not as bleak as it seems, because in spite of our losses, the enthusiasm and spirit of the team never faltered. Each girl worked harder at the practice and improved with each passing game. Three players also gained honors at the end of the season, being chosen to the All-District League se- cond team, Donna Defaranos, Michaele Milano and Kathi Pulit. Next year the outlook is very good, with all the girls returning from the varsity and a strong returning J. V. squad, we anticipate taking this year's record and turning it around. 109 GIRLS' SWIMMIN 1982 Swim Team - Sara Luckenbach, captain, Lynn DeLucis, Sue Prentice, Ellen Manning, Helen Schmidt, Patty Zyde, Heidi Altvater, Sue Gorry, Beth Carlson, Liz Heldmann, Kim Mulligan, Marla Cavallaro, Tina DeBiaso, Marleene Jasorkowski, Marie Jelliffe, Meg Heldman, Terry McCauley, Chris Thompson. Managers: Sue Cobb, Donna Onofrio, Sally Ferko and David Tropeano 110 Ship ahoy mates!!! This is the way we clap our hands! The 1982 girls swimming team led by senior Sara Lucken- bach had a record of 10 wins and 4 losses ending it's seventh consecutive winning season. Some highlights of the season were the 8th consecutive capturing of the West Haven-Law Trophy and having four members, Patty Zyde, Heidi Altvater, Liz Heldmann, and Ellen Manning qualify for the L championships. Our best finish was 9th in the 400 yard freestyle relay. Two members of our squad, Sara Luckenbach and Ellen Manning, were chosen as Harstan's Star of the Week. Other honors were conferred on Patty Zyde, most valuable swim- mer, Ellen Manning, most competitive swimmer, Sara Luckenbach, coaches award, Tina Debraso, excellence in div- ing and Beth Carlson, most improved swimmer. These awards were presented at the annual banquet held this year at the Royal Footman Restaurant in Hamden. And the winner is . . . - Guilty much? Carlsson Not Shown: M. DeMartin, E. Brown, T. Talton The 1982 Cross Country team was a young squad. Out of the twelve members on the team, eight were sophomores. We were a team of, and for, the future. The team's single victory came against Lee High School, yet this was not their best team effort. The best team effort came against Foran and Jonathan Law where Capt. Gerard Smart placed third and fourth respectively, and we placed a lot higher than our opponents figured we would. For the first time in five years, we also had a girl's distance team. Senior Patty Rowsome brought respectability to her team by placing fifth in each of her races against North Haven, Jonathan Law and Sacred Heart. Cross Country is a tough, competitive sport and often times victory does not go to the athlete who is the strongest physical- ly, but rather to the athlete who, while covering those long, lonely miles can overcome the battle with hisfher strength of will to push for one more moment, for one more stride, in an at- tempt to cross the tape for a moments glory and a lifetime of satisfaction. To these fine, young athletes l say, keep the faith, for the future is yours. l also want to thank seniors Gerard Smart and Patty Rowsome for their maturity, their leadership, and their sense of humor! Seniors who have struggled and worked hard the last three years and who have had to overcome physical pain and anguish and the apathy that has grown during the last years. These girls are Patty Rowsome, Pam Williams, Darlene Aiken and Stacey Spearman. Each has contributed not only outstanding athletic performances but also leadership and enthusiasm. Patty has set three different school records, in the 1500 meters, 3000 meters and is co-record holder in the 800 meters. Pam holds the school record in the 100 meter hurdles and 300 meter hurdles. Darlene is my most consistent runner. She has improved greatly and will challenge Pam's records this season. Stacey is my jane of all trades. She is a proficient sprinter and l use her often to run the 100,000 or relay. She is also one of the premier throwers excell- ing in discus. Many new faces are here this year, which is very encouraging! Highlighting the season was two Coliseum wins against arch-rival Hamden, the first being a 3-2 come from behind overtime victory. The Westies advanced to the quarter-final round of the state tournament by defeating Simsbury 7-4 before losing to Fairfield Prep 5-1 in the quarter-finals. ln addition to Morrell, Carney and Robles, the team will lose seniors Armand Cuozzo and Tom Southworth through graduation.
