Massella Millicent Cashmen S6'CfeIl1fy Treasurer CLASS HI TORY In September of our sophomore year, we entered West Haven High School scared, and what seemed to be, alone. By November most of our fears had subsided and we were well on our way to what would be, for most of us, a successful high school career. Class elections were held and the results showed Greg Bell, president, Tracy Mooney as vice-president, Marlisa Massella, secretary and Joe Mursko as treasurer. These were the first leaders of the Class of 1982. Another first in our sophomore year was the participation of underclassmen in the Homecoming ceremonies as members of the court to a senior Homecoming King and Queen. Late in our Sophomore year, Junior class officers were elected with two new additions to our class government. Russ Aldrich was our new president, Tracy. Mooney and Marlisa Massella retained their positions as vice-president and secretary, while Millicent Cashmen took on the responsibilitiy of treasur- er. These changes in leadership proved to be the last, for all officers regained their positions at the start of our Senior year. Qur Junior year began enthusiastically with the anticipation of receiving our class rings. Our class had become better acquainted with Westie High, and thus, more unified. School spirit began to increase and suddenly we could not be as passive as we had been as sophomores. There were important decisions to be made and committees to be formed. The Junior Prom Committee was elected late in November and many ideas began to circulate concerning the prom. From this point many fund raising events were sponsored by the juniors to help defray the cost of the prom. Of course carnations were sold for every occasion imaginable and lunches made by the Class council for faculty members also proved to be a successful fund-raising endeavor. As all these activities culminated the high point of the year was the Junior Prom. The event of the evening was the announcement of the court and crowning of the King and Queen. The results were: 3rd runners up: Marlisa Massella and Barry Luthe, 2nd runners up: Diane Papa and Gary Pargan, lst runners up: Mary Kelly and David Shepard, and when the King and Queen were announced Roger Erickson and Tracy Mooney danced to the prom theme, Comes a Time. Our Senior year got off to a great start with the Senior class sponsoring a multitude of events ranging from a successful Halloween Dance to an equally successful magazine drive. Once again Homecoming was upon us and it was our year to lead the court consisting of underclassmen. The traditional parade honoring the band, football team and Homecoming Court was held the night before the Thanksgiving game. Topping off the Homecoming events were the presentations to the Homecoming Court: 3rd runners up were Maureen Gorry and Donny Iannuzzi, 2nd runners up were Mary Kelly and Keith Watson, lst runners up were Lisa Towles and Lorenzo Colletta and the King and Queen were Roger Erickson and Tracy Mooney. All of these events that have taken place throughout our three years here at West Haven High would have never been possible without the guidance of Mr. George Mack and Mr. Steven Pelosi our class advisors. The time and effort that they have put into making the Class of '82 successful did not go unnoticed or unappreciated. It is evident we will always remember the good times we have shared as a class and the lasting friendships we have made. It is also evident that these experiences will leave a lasting impression upon each and every member of our class. These impressions will help us face the challenges of the future with eagerness and anticipation. l DEBRA L. Marching Band As senior leaders of West Haven High School's 1981-1982 Blue Devil Band, we are committed to carrying on the Tradition of Excellencev that has been the trademark of this organization since its formation in 1963. Our year started before last year ended . . . two weeks of interviews, practices and auditions led to our selections last June or our Drum Majorettes and Devilette Captain. The band selected Millicent Cashman and Laura Faith as the Drum Majorettes and as Devilette Captain, Anne Acampora was chosen. The June 27th-July 5th Performing tour brought us to California which helped us to better understand the active role we would have to play as leaders if our year was to be a successful one. Summer vacation meant three hours a week rehearsals, car washes and long meetings with our advisors - Mr. Crabtree and Mr. Ferriolo to give our band its direction. One of our tasks during these rehearsals was to select a President and Steel Drum Leader and also derive a fifteen member Council. Our band President was chosen to be Diane Skarlos and the Steel Drum Leader was to be Furman Romans. Our summer practices turned into fall rehearsals, cruel and unusual punishmentv as they came to be known, in addition to our daily outside rehearsal in rain and mud, we added two more rehearsals a week . . . and our 8:00 A.M. practices on Saturday morning. Slowly, a group of 125 individuals were molded into one band and our experiences grew, so did our pride in what we were accomplishing . . . we were, indeed, carrying on the Tradition of Excellence. Nine football halftime shows, pep parades and rallies, a Christmastime tour of area convalescent homes, the Mayor's Inauguration, tons of car washes, raffles, unforgettable paper drives, council meet- ings, steel drum rehearsals, band parent meetings, meant a busy, but truly rewarding start to our band . . . and the BEST is yet to come. With a six-eleven record the girls had a disappointing season this ear, but there were bright points and good times to remember. The ,x wins were a result of our good beating twice the schools of Lee, Iross and St. Mary's, but the games well worth remembering were r away games at Hillhouse, Hamden, and North Haveng the tough- t teams on our schedule. Thought we lost by slim margins it was in these games that we 'towed our characteristic ability to rise to the occasion and play a ugh, offensive, and exciting game, and that with only one string of rsity. Then the heat was on Co. Captain Judy Mutt, consistently depen- ent, would become inspired to more firey offense. Diane ftankj sposito and Lisa Schurk, would become ruthless spikers, while athy Gambacini and Tracy Skomro would turn into madwomen as ey dived and knocked themselves out to get those points. The 1981 Cross Country team was the kind of team which performed best in larger meets. While they only compiled a record of 2 wins and 9 losses, in the County meet. They defeated Bristol, Sheehan, East Haven, and Foran, and in the sectionals they outran Stamford, Westhill, Brian McMahon and Norwalk. The underdog in all but three meets and running against teams 2 to 3 times their size, the team ran with determination. The Westies were led by Senior capt. George Johnson, who earned the respect of coaches in the area by setting a course record in Derby, placing 13th in the County meet, 1 1th in the LL finals, and 32nd in the state open. The other senior who did a fine job this year is Wayne Smith, who, even though he joined us late in the season, contributed to the teamis character with his winning attitude. The rest of the squad who contributed to the team's success are: Juniors Kiah Johnson, Chris Townsend, Leon Hanna, and the Scholar, Gerard Smart, Sopho- mores Phil Baldwin, Mike DeMartin, and super soph',, Curtis Deas. Standing: The girls started their season off slow this year, but with determi- nation managed to keep it slow. Their 0-18 win-loss record, though, doesn't mean they didn't put their heart into the season. Senior Sue Greenwalt was out for most of the season, leaving the first string with only two seniors, captain Jennifer Tingley, and Terry Mulli- gan, who struggled to keep up the fight. The younger girls had to keep up the pace, and were given experience which we hope they can use next year to show up the district teams. 156 by i What do you mean you're going to sit this one out? The existing morale was also kept where it was by the undying spirit, and unendingjokes of coach Dave Tremblay. The most valuable player award of the year was given to co-captian Bob Gorry, and Senior Al Markowich received the most dedicated player award. Led by senior captains Craig Morgan, Bill Oronzo, Ken Prisco, and Ron Sires, this year's team is com- prised of mostly Juniors and Sophomores. Some out- standing prospects appear to be Juniors Jim Carney, Ed Brereton, and Dave Jobg Who should lead the scoring along with Scott Langley and Senior Lor- enzo Colletta who will anchor the defense.
