Barry Cohen Paige Shepard President Vice-President z,' :W 113 V V, : W I M 7 , af 2 Kathleen Dean Treasurer Carolyn Sires Secretary CLASS HISTORY As we entered West Haven High School, we had virtually no idea of what the future held for us. We were flocked into the auditorium the first day of school like a bunch of wild geese awaiting our welcoming address and homeroom assignments. Each of us was a stranger to the person who we sat next to in class. A mixture of fear, excitement, anxiety, and curiosity filled our emotions. Soon into the spectrum of class pride, two dynamic people, Sophomore Class Advisors, Dorene Conlan and Patricia Korzon, conducted the elections for our class. We were proud when Peter Lloyd Brown was elected president, Paige Shepard, vice- president, Carolyn Sires, secretaryg and Bridget Johnson, treasurer. These officers, along with a strong class council, conducted many successful fundraisers. Their efforts included carwashes, bake-sales, the selling of wastepaper baskets, and a childrens summer survey. As the year came to a close, the high school was accredited for another two years and we all gave a sigh of relief. Our class became better acquainted with Westie High and thus was more unified. Junior Class elections were held, and the following slate of officers would lead the class through an extremely ambitious and superlative year, Barry Cohen, president, Donna Foy, vice president, Carolyn Sires, secretary, and Stephanie Johnson, treasurer. As the new year approached, so did a new class advisor, Kevin Lonegran, who took on the responsibility with Dorene Conlan. Now the class was off to a fresh start, and anxious to take on a new look. In striving for individuality, the class of '80 broke with traditions of the past. For the first time Juniors received their class rings in January instead of March of the school year. Like any junior year, the Junior Prom was foremost in every students' mind. The class officers were determined to make the prom affordable for all, and so concentrated on many new and lucrative activities for the year. Such activities included: candy sales, a Christmas Stocking Contest, the selling of datebooks, green camations for St. Patrick's Day, a Luau Dance, and a few tagsales. But more importantly our class was unique in that it co-sponsored such events as a Thanksgiving food drive and the Muscular Dystrophy Danceathon. It made an everlasting impression on people and created a growing sense of pride for class spirit. . . . And who could forget the notoriously famous words of Mr. Rosomondo, This is a Civil Defense Alert, please evacuate the building promptly. Or how about the fire alarms, and the fire alarms, and then again the fire alarms! As all of these activities culminated, the Junior Prom was made the high point of the year. The class again broke tradition by having a sit-down dinner at the North Haven Ramada Inn on April 28th, 1979. The highlight of the evening was the crowning of the Prom King and Queen. When the winners were announced, Lesley Richards and Richard Conte danced to the prom theme, Just You 'N Me, as tears collected in girls eyes and congratulations were passed out. At 1:00 AM., people filed into the girls gym which was converted into a garden paradise of pastel streamers and tissue paper flowers. Our prom will always be remembered as one of the best junior proms a high school has undertaken. The year ended on a definitive note, when again, we demonstrated our ability and concern to elect leaders for the senior year. Barry Cohen was again victorious as he returned as president, Paige Shepard was elected vice-president, Carolyn Sires was re- elected for her third term as secretary, and Kathy Dean was elected treasurer. As seniors, the class became leaders of the school. Seniors took on the enormous responsibilities of heading clubs, sports teams, and many other activities throughout the year. A class council was formed. It sponsored a multitude of fundraising events. Dances, candy drives, raffles, and a fashion show were just a few activities that occurred during the year. The Homecoming Week that took place extended from November 19th thru November 23rd. On the 21st, a true to life parade was held with the Homecoming Court, the football team, floats, and band, followed by a pep rally on the green. Topping the week off, was the 1st Annual Homecoming Dinner Dance, which was held Friday the 23rd at the Knights of Columbus Hall. The Seniors also retumed Student Government to the high school. Peter Brown was elected President of this committee. The Student Activity Committee was also put into full swing under the direction of Mrs. Deliah Gomes and chaimian Ralph Petrucci. Although this seems like much, the complete history of our class is more detailed than what can be put down on paper. The Class of 1980 is a class that showed great leadership, outstanding devotion, and undying faith in all its endeavors. The memories, good times, and love for one another will linger on forever in our minds. We are grateful to all who have given of themselves to make our high school years, three of the most memorable years of our lives. 47 LESLIE ABBOTT 503 Jones Hill Road Ambition: College BRYAN HUBBARD ANDERSON 278 Jones Hill Road Chem. The two people who have been beside us through both the good times and the bad are Mrs. Dorene Conlan and Mr. Kevin Lonergan. The proms, dances, and other events were fun, but they all brought their share of headaches. So many times we wanted to toss it all in because nobody cares, but they did, and together we made it. Because of their guidance and encourage- ment, the Class of 1980 will always be able to look back upon a memorable three years. We would like to express our gratitude with deep affection for these are two wonderful people who have given so unselfishly of themselves to make the Class of 1980 the greatest ever. Mrs. Conlan and Mr. Lonergan, thank you for everything. Your Class 1 s At our first Sophomore Class Council meeting, the Class of 1980 vowed that it would be one of the most dynamic groups ever to walk through the doors of West Haven High School. Not only have they proven this to themselves, but have also set a precedent for future classes. Their spirit and leadership will echo through the halls long after they leave. We are extremely proud also, to be a part of the Class of 1980. We hope they will always think of us with fond remembrance. You have touched our lives and we have touched yours. To the Class of 1980, we wish you health, happiness, and love. Dorene Conlan Kevin Lonergan JOSEPH CONZO LISA M. COOK DIANA COPPOLA 88 Leete Street 828 Ocean Avenue 62 Strathmore Road Baseball 3, 4. The Student Council was responsible for all the busine social activities and fundraises that our class held in the p three years, at Westie High. Our Class Council was unique in the fact that so many pe ple, who never met each other before, from different juni' high schools, and unrelated backgrounds, grouped togeth in our Sophomore year for one primary reason: The dee concern, dedication, interest, and one's mutual ua derstanding that we would strive to make the Class of '81 the best class to ever walk through the doors of W.H.H.f The Council's achievements were many and far-reachi Such achievements included dances, skate parties, can and bake sales, raffles, the selling of camations, and vario other fundraises too numerous to mention. In 1977 we began our fight, in 1979 we won. Since then we have elected our first SGA officers, formed the ex- ecutive council, the congressional council, and the student activities committee. ln the month of October we staged the first mayoral debate in West Haven High School history. In the months of November and December we pulled our ex- ecutive powers together and in January 1980 we operated a very successful Blood Drive. Through negotiations with the Administration teams, it was anticipated that the 1980 senior class would receive better and more extensive benefits from senior privileges than ever before. Outside privileges were scheduled to commence at the end of April. All in all, the Student Government Association's first Administration has done a great service for West Haven High School. It has established and opened channels for which has given way to a new feeling school-wide com- munication, unity, and involvement. In addition SAC is involved in the Muscular Dystrophy Dance-a-Thon. A new contribution of SAC to the high school will be the Events Calendar to be located in the display case in the main lobby. Way back in November of 1978, a junior prom committee of 25 members wa selected by the student body of the Junior class. It was to be their job to financj and plan the Junior Prom. The Prom Committee began having weekly meetings and things started to roll under the direction of Donna Reid and Tom Raucci whom were the elected co- chairpersons. Having advisors like Doreen Conlan and Kevin Longergan was ar advantage to the class, and just one of the reasons the prom was destined to be great. Havoc began when ideas of colors and themes started buzzing around. Each Prom Committee member had his own idea of what the ideal theme and color combination would be . . . After much thought the decision was made. lt woul' be, Just You and Me for the theme and the gym would be converted into a enchanted garden with pastel shades. Soon, it was only a few days before the prom and time to begin decorating Everything seemed perfect until the Prom Committee realized that the lattic paper wall covering was not flame retardent. The committee had to act quickl and find a way to fireproof the paper. The solution to the problem was to spra the paper with a watered mixture. It sounds simple, but the result was disastrou The paper wrinkled and fell to the floor. The committee felt the prom would be disgrace, but the next day with much work and readjusting, the gym slowly transformed into an enchanted garden. The committee members stood back t view what was to be the site of their after prom. A bridge stood in front of a enormous mural on the back wall. The streamers created a heaven of soft pastels. Satisfied with their accomplishments the committee went home to rea themselves for the big night ahead of them. Tuxedos and flowers had to b picked up. Gowns had to be hemmed, hair appointments kept, and all the littl things were left undone till the few hours before the prom. April 28th did finall arrive. The prom was held at the Ramada Inn. After dinner and dancing til midnight, couples departed for the enchanted garden. An arbor of gorgeou flowers welcomed the prom couples as they entered the garden for the last hou of 'iJust You and Me . SE IOR PROM COMMITTEE .fx 'kwa 1. rst Row, LR: J. Williams, J, l.aFrance, M. Ellie Flame lS fun. l As in any activity, special bonds form among the members and so it is the case with Blu Flame staff members. In the frantic scramble to complete publishing deadlines, fast friendships become c mented with the desperate laughter which comes from long hours of frustration, aggravatic M and finally triumph. Attempting to capture the essence of their class, the staff is recompensed upon viewir the completed edition: a gathering of memorable moments to be treasured long after lee ing West Haven High School. For their dedication to producing such a book, the Blue Flame staff deserves the admit tion, respect, and heartfelt thanks of their fellow members of the Class of 1980. Noreen Alexand Enough, if something from our hands have power To live, and act, and serve the future hour. Wordsworth High school years are often recalled as some of the most exciting years of our lives. Cap- tured in this edition of the Blue Flame is the experience of the class of 1980 - a wellspring of memories from which each member of the senior class may drink in the years ahead. Each time the owner flips through the pages of this yearbook, the faces viewed, the friends gathered, the moments savoured will revive endless remembrances which made this time special. As in past years, this edition of the Blue Flame exists because of the dedication and deter- mination shown by a small but willing group of students. The countless hours given, the dif- ficulties overcome, and the tough decisions made are the invisible but vital ingredients of this book. Little recognition or acclamation results from their contributions. The almost anonymous members of the Blue Flame staff receive only the satisfaction that comes from service and the pride derived from a job well done. I take this opportunity, on behalf of every member of the class of 1980, to thank each member of the Blue Flame staff for their service and to applaud their obvious talent - 'iThank you and congratulations. Richard Bittner l This Blue Flame edition is special to you for it is your high school yearbook and shall always carry you back to some of the greatest times of your lives. Yet, to those who actually put these pages together, this book is that and much more. Only those on the Blue Flame staff can truly ap- preciate all that lies within these bindings. The staff members worked together with the common goal of creating a book that would contain something special for each of you. The first major task was to decide upon a theme. The Blue Flame room was filled with concemed members, all anxious to come up with a per- fect theme, 'lime Passages was ultimately decided upon, and with that the editors set out to match pictures with words that would best represent the Class of 1980's Time Passages. The inside cover like the theme, was a very special project. The editors desired something unique, something that would represent the diver- 4- sity of their class. We hope that these lockers which harbored much more than just books will forever remind you of the friendships made, mo- ments experienced, and knowledge acquired not only in the classroom, but on the field, in the locker room and the countless other places you occupied during your high school years. The Blue Flame room, a windowless cinderblock room painted blazing yellow, was our home away from home. lf asked to describe it briefly, you might say it had the lived in look. Books, photos, copy, carbon, jackets, and skates covered the table and chairs. This general state of chaos seemed to be the only one in which we could be productive. Several attempts were made to organize us however, all were in vain. Deadline days although only five in number are perhaps the most memorable of the year. Yes, the days Brian came to pick up the finished pages, that were never quite finished. The days we missed a class or two or three or . . . Oh yes, incidentally, a gracious thank you to all our teachers who were so wonderfully understanding when we occupied the Blue Flame room instead of their classrooms, in order to meet deadlines. Famous last words: Kerstin, Lets squeeze the faculty on 15 pages. Ann, Where's my Delmar? Maureen, Where's the idiot tool . . . I need a caption!! Kathy, The money blew away . . . funny showers? Pixie, lim so tired . . . still missing 70 faculty pictures! Andrea, He withdrew . . . good, scratch him. He's camera shy, him too, and her and her and ..... Karen, Mr McCrevan marching band found out her name .... the little Aaron, I'll be back in a minute. Robyn, Anymore copy to be typed!!!! The Blue Flame staff would like to express its gratitude to a few special people, who helped immeasurably in the making of this book Mr. McCrevan, although our co-advisor for but a short time, aided the staff throughout the year. His photographic creativity and willingness to photograph teams and clubs in but a day's notice saved us from missing more than one deadline. The other people whom we would like to recognize are our advisors, Miss Noreen Alexander and Mr. Richard Bittner, who worked long hours beside us and enthusiastically supported as well as inspired new ideas to make the 1980 Blue Flame a truly unique yearbook A genuine closeness developed not only among the staff members, but with our advisors as well. This solidarity was possible because of a mutual willingness to share. Working with them, we benefitted tremendously from their sensitivity, understanding, and openness. Many disasters, although certainly not all, were avoided because of the combined knowledge and suggestions of staff members and advisors alike. The sacrifices made by Miss Alexander and Mr. Bittner are too numerous to recount, but shall never be forgotten by us. We would like to thank both of them on behalf of our entire class for their part in the production of the 1980 Blue Flame. We especially wish to thank them, not only for their advisory contributions, but also for those contributions they have made to us personally. Miss Alexander and Mr. Bittner, thank you for everything, most of all, for your friendship. 130 A I ,mx 4.- M 'iw .ff 2' 'f . J N ' 4 a v , , fu . ik. X X dx arg Q , , -. f i Mad it ww M, EW ii? Oh no, he beat me by a mile. Coach Mr. Bradbury Led by senior Captain Ernie Hayes, the Westie Harriers had their best season in four years. Ernie placed first against Oliver Wolcott, second against East Haven and Fairfield Prep, and third against Kolby Catholic, Harding and Hamden. I feel that his best race of the season came against a strong Fairfield Prep team where Ernie ran his fastest time ever on our home course. The other senior who contributed his talents to the team's success was Damian Gambacini. Darriian's best performances were against Oliver Wolcott, Kolby Catholic, North Haven, and East Haven where he placed fifth overall. The rest of the squad consisted of a group of enthusiastic Juniors including: Jim Conyers, Bill Griffin, Leary Jones, Jim Newby and Mike Welch. I look forward to working with these athletes again next year. It was a season I shall remember for its successes. It was a year of feeling what it was like to win again, and it was a year where there was a feeling of unity and camaraderie. I was fortunate to be able to work with such a fine group of athletes.
