T'hQ LR. Chris Maginniss Russ Smith 0 Angie D'Attoma Marty Moran in an all out effort to catch one of George Hartman's aerials. West Haven 20, Notre Dame 14. That victory over our intratown arch rivals in our first game of the campaign forecasted a successful season for the Blue Devils, but several bad breaks and injuries to key players hampered Coach Whitey Piurek's quest for a winning year. Star lineman, Chris Maginniss, was forced out of action early in the season with a torn knee cartilage. Various minor ailments kept other first line players from attaining their full effectiveness. Even so, this season had more than its share of thrills. Fleet-footed halfback, Angie D'Attoma, set a schoolboy record with a 99 yard T. D, dash against Hamden. Shades of the past were recalled in the annual Hillhouse-West Haven Thanksgiving game when, after a Westie touchdown, quick thinking Marty Moran scooped up a loose ball and drop-kicked the extra point. Thus, an otherwise disappointing season should be remembered for these unusual events. TRACK The track team resumed operations in 1953 under the guidance of mentor Bill Irons after a lapse of two years. The team lacked any experienced operatives, but did extremely well under the existing conditions. Angie D'Attoma was one of the state's leading shotputters and Billy Gaulman was among the top men in the sprint lield. Other mainstays were seniors Chris Maginniss and Dick Reilly. Nineteen Fifty-three was a year for development which will certainly auger well for West Haven in producing better teams in the future. This project was followed by the Thanksgiving basket to which the members contributed generously. The basket upon being filled was presented to a needy family. By decorating the Christmas Tree in the school lobby, the Pathfinders helped to brighten the Yuletide season at West Haven High School. Serving at card parties seemed to bring much pleasure to the girls as they served at both the Teacher's and the Fathers Club Card Parties. T. A. G. Day, a project carried out in all the New Haven Area Schools, was a huge success at West Haven because of the earnest support given it by the Pathfinders. Each girl volun- teered to solicit money for two hours one afternoon for the Heart Fund. The Pathfinder's Card Party and Fashion Show is fast be- coming a favorite with all. The proceeds from this party are used as scholarship funds for the seniors. May not only brings bees and flowers but also the Turn About Twirl. At this time every gal asks her best beau to buzz around the dance floor with her at this social event of the year. i xi- -.L . I see a large group of people having a wonderful time. I wonder who they are? Why don't you know? They are members of the German, Spanish and French Clubs. Right now they are enjoying the annual Christmas party. The Spanish Club is entertaining the group with a short skit entitled. La Posada de Nochebuenaf' The members are also receiving many surprises when grabbing their gifts from the Pinata, a Spanish grab bag. The German Club will give a pantomine of the story Silent Night, and then report on the various Christmas customs in Germany. The French club also will give a skit entitled La Veillo de Noel, CChristmas Eveb. Look they're singing now. I recognize the melody but not the words. That's because the Christmas carols are sung in different languages. Throughout the year the clubs are busy with many activities. The Spanish Club's highlight of the season is a trip to New York. A replica of a monastery and a Spanish restaurant will be visited. At one of the German Club's monthly meetings a Dance Festival night was held where German folk dances were shown to the group. To wrap up the season of activities, the German Club will hold a picnic. The French Club didn't win a plane trip to Paris, but did hear an interesting talk by a guest speaker who had traveled in France, Italy, Spain, and England. Colored slides of the famous places were also shown. It looks like the language clubs have a full and interesting season. Too bad we didn't land a little sooner. Spain keeps the Christmas spirit with carols, too, as demon strated by Eileen Bassett, Pete Zeikus, and Dolores Durante singing Noche de Paz. Audrey Hubbard, Art Gaugli- umi, and Marcella Funk help ART CLUB Swing your partner. This phrase brings to mind one of the biggest events of the year, the Art Club Barn Dance. This year's dance was the most successful that the club has ever held. With the money obtained, the Art Club nnally realized its dream of presenting an air brush to the Art Depart- ment of West Haven High School. Prior to the barn dance, the club elected officers and prepared for the dance by making posters, designing decorations, and planning refreshments. In December, the members helped to decorate the school for Christmas by painting a joyful winter scene on the windows. This was followed in February by a Valentine's party for all. Although many of us do not realize it, the Art Club does much to beautify the school. ART CLUB. CHEMISTRY CLUB The chemistry club members didn't make airplane fuel but they did perform many other extraordinary experiments. Under the supervision of Miss Barnet, faculty adviser, flares were made that might have been used to guide a lost plane. Wide eyes and open mouths were the expressions of many when carbon came from the dehydrating action of sulfuric acid on sugar, lt was just as amazing as that first plane trip might have been. . Fourth of july came a little early when long snakes were made. Using a magic wand, water was changed into wine and to add another festive note to the occasion a red ammonium fountain bubbled up in one of the experiments. To err is human, but the chemistry club members soon learned that safety first was a better saying to follow, Setting up equipment correctly and reading labels on bottles fitted this expression. Between the halves of the Hillhouse-West Haven game they show off their abilities in precision marching. It takes weeks of planning and practicing to give this exhiliit. But the performance is the merit of their labor. In the spring preparations for choosing the cheerleaders begin. Then one day in May the actual try-outs are held. Every girl participating has butterflies in her stomach and a prayer on her lips. Ten juniors and two sophomores are chosen. To become a cheerleader is one of the greatest honors. Other girls both envy and admire them. The greatest thrill for a cheerleader or a Pep Clubber is realizing that she has helped to promote school spirit. Class log September, 1950 -- On a clear, sunny day, we, as Freshmen, soared into our new homeland, West Haven High School. Miss Snavely greeted us and gave us detailed instructions concerning our first year's activities. After a few weeks, we elected our class ofhcers to help guide us. Martin Moran, Dolores Cavalier, joan Coates, and Marcia Boyd were chosen president, vice-president, secretary, and treasurer respectively. Dolores is the first girl to be voted into the office of vice-president. Being 367 in number, our class was the largest one in school. All were grieved to hear of Mr. Haley's plans for retirement next june. October, 1950 - How proud were the boys chosen for the traffic squad this month! They avert much of the hallway confusion. Arthur Guagliumi made himself known by cap- turing Hrst prize in a poster contest sponsored by the Camp Week Project. Hal Smullen's frosh football team came through with flying colors by posting an undefeated season. November, 1950 - What excitement prevailed during this month. As fate would have it, Hillhouse carried away football honors at the Bowl by beat- ing us 26-6. The twenty-fifth found West Haven in a sorry fix. No lights, no power, no steeple on the Congrega- tional Church and, unfortunately, no school. As far as drives are concerned, our class was top- flight. In both the Red Cross and Polio Drives, we surpassed the goals set for us. December, 1950 - Under Mr. Graham's guid- ance, the Hi-Y collected toys and books for the Salvation Army - a big success. This same group took its Hrst solo flight by staging a very enjoyable Christmas dance. Joyce Calabrese, Diane Dunn, and Rosemary Pan- dolfi made the Rostrum staff. january, 1951 - From the money received by FRESHMAN FOOTBALL TEAM. February, 1951 - Our hockey team showed its stuff by winning both the district and state cham- pionships and off they zoomed to Providence. Three cheers for the Frosh Dramats who pre- sented a play, Who Dunnit? It was a very humor- ous comedy, well acted by the players. March, 1951 - Bill Irons' basketball squad dis- played fine form and ended the season by winning five games and losing three. April-May, 1951 - Our class won its wings for sure after the Freshman Frolic. The profit was higher than expected and from this, the Class of '55 will receive handbooks. Freshman art students took part in the lobby art exhibition. By winning three and losing two, our baseball team did us proud. Marcia Gustavson, joan Lindquist, and Marcia Boyd attained honorable mention in a dressmaking exhibit held for the entire school. june, 1951 - Merry Molly Malone, a comedy, was the second successful play put on by the Drama- tic club. Exams were held -- enough said! june twelfth and no school. Time out for the circus! And here we are at last, safely piloted through our first year and ready to go up for further hops. September, 1951 - At our first joint assembly, Mr. Belcher urged the purchasing of AA books. A contest for Miss AA was held. Sydney Wilson won, while Barbara Zyde represented our class. We led 6-0 at the half but it didn't last. The final score, 19-6, in favor of Hillhouse. December, 1952 - junior girls were able to join Pathfinders this year and many did.
