E E E S 1 V V Lg FOREWORD is NCHORS awei fhl and four vears afo a bewildered crew gs 5 Q33 ' of Landlubbers set sail on an adventurous cruise to seek TJ wg for buried treasure, treasure other then Pirate-gold. CY. H? 1 . . . . L4 eff, Guided by our knowing ofhcers, We anxiously explored new lands in Science and Psycohology, Finding bits of treasure here and there. XVe learned to dive deeply into the sea of knowledge and to gather brilliant pearls for safe-keeping. Our First Mate, Perseverance, was there, helping us steer a straight course between the many snags, and rescuing those of us who fell overboard. Now our voyage is ended. No longer clumsy Landlubbers, we are skilled Seamen about to steer our own course into another sea, a larger one. lt was good to sail upon the sea and find treasure. If, in these four years, we have learned to swim only one stroke the voyage has not been in vain if that stroke be strong enough to keep us above the water. The memories of this voyage will ever afford us pleasure. May this Logbook keep these memories ever fresh for us. llon Voyage! This year has marked another important era in the Rostrum, and it has vied admirably with its preceding publications. It can also be stated that much of its success has been due to the careful supervision of Miss Bryant, Miss Buckley, Mr. Gabriel, and Mr. Laden. Each issue has displayed personality and originality. New columns which have gained much popularity in the past year are Communications, which is entirely devoted to etiquette for high school youthsg Cine-Views, in which synopses are given of the best motion picturesg and Faculty Notes, with bits of information about our teachers. Rube's News Tidbits still retains a high place among our current readers, and our editorials might well be copied by some of our large newspapers. There are the literary and joke columns to suit the various individuals as our paper tries to cater to all of its readers. This year was the second in which we have belonged to the Connecticut Scholastic Press, and at its convention in February our editorial board was chosen to take charge of the meeting where individual opinions were expressed in regard to the publication of school periodicals. On May 25 a banquet was given to the retiring board at the Hotel Garde, and it was a delightful ending to difficult but pleasant work. - Senior Members of flzr Staff - Editor-in-Chief ..... .. . The girls began their full year of activities by entertaining at a Hallowe'en party. This gave the members an opportunity to become better acquainted with one another. They donated money to the Community Chest and at Thanksgiving time gave Z1 basket to a poor family. They proceeded with their welfare work by knitting an afghan for a needy family. Every Friday some girls attended the Leila Day Nursery to help care for the children. As usual this year the girls carried out the tradition of their predecessors by decorating the Christmas tree in the lobby of the school. The greatest social undertaking of the year was their dance, a gala event, held at the Y.XV.C.A. in the large, delightfully decorated assembly hall. The success of this enterprise is due entirely to the co-operation and enthusiasm of the members. ln keeping with previous years, the girls planned to entertain the alumnae at a reunion in the form of a party in their honor. It was also their desire to have a Mother-Daughter party which they held in the form of a tea. It is the pledge of the girls to be Hloyal, true members of the Girl Reserves and in view of their year's activities it may be acknowledged that all have lived up to their pledge. - OFFICERS - President ............... BASKETBALL Under the eflicient coaching of Mr. Fitzgerald our team enjoyed a fairly successful season. The team was led on the floor by Captain Julius Shanbrom, a truly inspiring leader, and was capably managed by Tommy Davenport. The varsity squad was composed of ten men of whom eight were seniors. The team lined up with Jimmie Shine at centerg Trotsky, Flynn, and Shanbrom at the forward posi- tions while Fox, Spreyer and johnson patrolled the back court. Morrissey, Harte mann, and Clark were used as substitutes. The season was opened with an auspicious victory over Norwalk to the tune of 38-19. In the second game our quintet lost to Hartford Bulkeley 38f17, but later in the season avenged the defeat by beating the Hartford team 38-36. The team ran through their schedule winning most of their games and were chosen for the Yale Tournament. On March 5, on the tournament floor XVest Haven met a Tartar in New Britain and were vanquished by the score of 45f30. That ended our Tournament aspirations. '35 O llappy Ship, to rise and dip, with the blue crystal at your lip-f O happy crew, my heart with you sails, sails, and sings anew. One bright afternoon in September, 1931, the good ship XV.H.H.S. '35 left its dock with its passenger list of 458 landlubbers looking forward to a four-year cruise of work and pleasure. The t1'aining ship having been painted with its colors of blue and white and having been made ready for its new voyage seemed to welcome us to a new land which is called high school-or training to face the difficulties that will come later in life. Our ship was the first one to set sail in the afternoon. Therefore, left to ourselves, we soon became organized as a unified crew which kept an interesting log. On looking through these records of the past we hnd- The officers elected to guide our destinies as Gobs through the Sea of Depressionu were Herbert johnson, Boatswain, George Scott, Boatswain's Mate, Frances Young, Slopchest's Keeper, Evelyn Scholhamer, Crew's Yeoman. XYhat an unlucky break for us when we had no chorus to help us sing away our seasickness. Our own orchestra, the first freshman orchestra, and assemblies helped to take its place, however, VVe all recall the shore leave in October when Michael LaVorgna led the football team in the season's first grid tilt when NVest Haven tied Ansonia 6-6. As we nea1'ed December our basketball team became well trained under Coach Fitzgerald. These lusty seamen were later to beat Commercial twice in the most exciting games of the seasonfin january, 20-185 in February, Z8fll. In the same month, Mr. Bass, assistant minister of the Congregational Church, boarded deck to speak to us on Making Good in Millersvillen, a topic which brought us many laughs. To conclude the program, Rosalind Field, who turned out to be one of the best entertainers aboard our ship, played a solo be- fore the freshman crew for the lirst time. There were happy days ahead! Do you recall on March Z the gala time with music, 'n' recitations, fn' every- thing? It was the play, The Evacuation of Boston , with Robert Carlson, Gene Condon, Charles Sholunas, XVilliam Vlfelch, Constant Manulik, Franklin Watts. and XYalter Kraskowski prancing on the stage in knee breeches and white wigs. The girls, looking like sweet sixty-two, were Louise XfVinterhalder, Norma Button, Bernice Hartley, Sydney Thomas, Esther Larash, Betsey Chatfield, and Helen Blomberg. On March 24 we were mustered together again for the Freshman Declama- tion Contest. The winners were Eleanor Brown and Charles Scholhamer. Evelyn Scholhamer and Vincent lJel'alma were awarded honorable mention. XVe waited a long time to be called aft again, but finally the annual school play came to us on May 13. lt was a farce in three acts, entitled A Full House . .,. iiiiii limi... Page IO4 iW...i.i L O G 13 O O As we were staying in the harbor at that time many people rowed in to see this play. Their efforts were well repaid. On Saturday, May 21, we were off duty and found it a fit time to celebrate VVashington's Bicentennial. Going down the dock we had a float representing Wasliington as the Surveyor. Students led the parade, with Si Perkins in charge of the band. Finally june came. The sea became rough-storm clouds were above- a few men were lost-then Final Examinations were over and with them, the first quarter of our voyage. As we felt energetic after a three months' vacation, we decided to con- tinue our trip in September, 1932, with our newly-elected staff of Quartermasters, Charles Scholhamer, George Scott, Frances Young, and Evelyn Scholhamer. Then on November 16, dim lights-but not too dim-a splendid orchestra, and a waxed floor which meant but one thing-dancing. The Ship's ballroom was appropriately decorated in Thanksgiving colors and was the scene of an enjoyable football dance. What a time we had celebrating our victory over Commercial ! Spring came, and the VVest Haven Garden Club awarded Martin Pysmenny honorable mention for his poster, while the Rostrum Board awarded Miriam Hayner, Morris Levine, Thomas Harkin, and Robert Stevenson positions on the Board as a. reward for the hard work they had done. June followed closely, and on a hot, murky day West Haven won the District and State title in baseball from Hillhouse with a score of S-7, as johnny XVezenski hit a home run and Rossomando fanned thirteen men. Then for the second time on our cruise we had to tackle final examinations which brought us the reward of tossing away our school books and of enjoying a three months' shore leave. Toward the latter part of August every one of us had had enough of just lazing around in the sun. We were prepared with bag and baggage to enter on the third part of our voyage under the command of Charles Scholhamer, Thomas Davenport, Frances Young, and Evelyn Scholhamer. Here we paused a moment to dedicate our thoughts to a man who had done more for the NVest Haven School system than can be known. XVith the death of Mr. Stiles, Superintendent of Schools, it can easily be understood why such a dark cloud came over our ship. This month marked many changes. A dinner was given by the Alumni to Mr. Seth G. Haley, who succeeded Mr. Stiles, The ship hailed him as the new Port Commander, and on November 15, Mr. llelcher, our new principal, was welcomed as our skipper for the rest of the voyage. ln December, Thomas Davenport was chosen to lead the football team of '35 to victory, and Trajicoms presented for the Christmas Assembly two plays- Uncle Bill's Merry Xmas , and King Sargon's jars . About this time lletsey Chatfield received her annual shiner',. lmuul Page lummim Wl4W'Ul'l14 G O G Kllllllllllll .Xfter a severe competition begun on January l7, the following members were added to the Rostrum Board: Christine l'etrillo, Alice Xvhitehead, and Lillian Holdsworth. For the following season, -lulius Shanbrom was elected captain of the basket- ball team, Herbert Johnson, captain of the soccer team, Philip Simeone, captain of the hockey team, and Lester McCarthy, captain of track. The hilarious farce, 'Second Childhood , containing a laugh in almost every line and directed by Mrs. Cox, was presented on May 18. Charles Scholhamer, Rosalind Field, Eleanor Alling, l'aul Bradley, Edmund Chilvin, Nancy OlKeefe, and Esther Larash took leading parts. On june Zl, the junior Prom, that long-awaited social highlight of the voyage, was held in the State Armory under the supervision of George Scott, Shirley Lohse, Christine l'etrillo, Esther Larash, Rosalind Field, Eleanor Brown, Paul lliggins, Paul Bradley, Thomas Harkin, and Eugene Condon, assisted by the Quartermasters. Then came a two months' leave and Hash! it was gone again. September, and outward bound once more! The favorite year of our cruise opened with every one of the shipls cabins occupied. Included among the 331 able seamen, the largest number ever to report for duty, were the traffic squad men, captained by George Scott, who were to keep us from the dangers and accidents of the sea. XX'ith everything shipshape once again, the most important thing for us to do was to choose the officers who were to take us through the perils of our last and busiest year of high school. The following carried out the duties of their positions very capably: Charles Scholhamer, Boatswaing George Scott, Boat- swain's Mate, Frances Young, Slopchest's Keeperg and Evelyn Scholhamer, Crew's Yeoman. March brought us the School Revue, later pronounced the best entertainment of its kind ever presented on the SS. NVest Haven. The Shipls Assembly Room was again the scene of the school play, this time under the name, A'Growing Pains , Mrs. Cox chose Robert Stevenson and Ruth Coe as the leading characters, assisted by a fine cast of juniors and Seniors. Now to hesitate a moment to consider all the fun that we have had upon the good ship VV.ll.H.S. '35.ABut then speedily and merrily it's headed homeward for graduation exercises and the numerous gala times of precommencement. The winners of the essay contest were Charles Scholhamer, First prize and Virginia Chapman, second prize. The following spoke at graduation: jack Norback, Doris lfllakeslee, Ioan Trambarulo, Arthur Bruneau, and Charles Scholhamer. The SS. West Haven was homeward bound! VVe had weathered the last gale and were steaming to shore with Hying colors. The S.S. West Haven was docking. A strange and prophetic message came over the ether waves as I was pre- paring to wire our position to llort Commander Seth G. Haley. The message came from an unregistered operator who called himself operator 39X of the Futurus. This strange operator claimed that he possessed magical powers which enabled him to live in the future and stated that he was at present living in the year 1960, and was attending a reunion banquet of the members of the class of 1935 of West Haven High School. lntent upon informing me further he tool: the role of narrator and described the reunion thus: I am at present sitting in a magniiicent hall, clustered with copious banquet tables around which are gathered the members of the class of 1935 of West Haven High School. I will first focus my attention upon the main table. The toastmaster for the evening is Lester McCarthy who has taken a holiday from his arduous duties as traffic officer in the thriving community of West Haven to maintain a mirth- ful mood at this gay affair. He is flanked on one side by Mr. Haley and on the other side by Mr. Belcher. 'ASitting next to Mr. Haley is the main speaker of the evening, a corpulent and dignified gentleman, Paul Higgins, whose garrulous tongue and political persuasiveness have placed him in the ofhce of State Senator. Directly opposite him is a prominent railroad man, Gene Condon, who has worked his way up to the position of general superintendent of the railroad. Gene is also to be a speaker and right now is dying the proverbial slow death in his nervousness. W l mmm: Eiflgfj wi iiiiiiii L o G B o o The next person to come to my attention is the maestro extraordinary of the violin world, Morris Levine, who is to entertain the gathering with several selections. A few seats from him are Dot Becker and Helen lllomberg, whose hirsutal adornments and smooth complexions are ample advertisement for their modern- istic beauty salon. Opposite them is Thomas Davenport, MD. fMaster of Debbyj, who is now the premier dancing and physical instructor of Connecticut. My, what a bashful fellow! Next to him is the dauntless Jack Norback, A-l daredevil of the East. Quite a handsome figure with his Castilian sideboards! Continuing on down the table I see Lorraine Ducharme and Charlotte Murphy chatting with each other. Presumably their conversation concerns their careers on Broadway. . The next figure to occupy my attention is Harry Dillon, the opulent haber- dasher, accompanied by his slaving clerks Lon Campane, Francis Keefe, and Fred Lawler. 'Some witty fellow has just put the crowd sitting around him in an uproar. Why, yes, that is Lefty Spottswood, the genial railroad employee and semi-pro baseball player surrounded by his companions of mirth, Tom Morrissey, the shooting gallery king, Robert Tracy, and the noted trapper, Jim Shine. Why, how could I miss this next figure with his black uniform in dark relief to his shining brass buttons and his badge. Yes, this is Tom Harkin, West Haven's jesting Fire Chief. Well, the verbose actress, Nancy O'Keefe, and her journalistically inclined companions, Alice Whitehead, Virginia Steven- son, Lillian Holdsworth, and Eleanor Alling, seem to be enjoying his humor. Three thriving ,M.D.'s, Joe Maiorano, Adolph Pickall, and Cliff Casner, sitting next to Porter Lyke, the taxi-cab owner, and Vinnie Sheehan, the West Haven plumbing inspector, seem to be discussing anything but business. Yet this, after all, is a vacation for them and a thing which they seldom have. One of the small side tables is almost entirely occupied by school teachers. There's Josephine Rothfuss, Eleanor Jensen, Miriam Hayner, Christine Petrillo, and Sydney Thomas. A'At another one of the side tables Allingtown is represented in full force. Louis Gherlone, the electrical engineer of West Haven, joe Ponzio, the pugilist, and joe Mento, the noted commercial artist, are sitting together. Around them are Bruno Franchini, a semi-pro baseball player, George Mento, the barber, and Harry Mislow, the proprietor of a chain of thriving grocery stores. nmumll PagC ummm ...,..... . 1. o o ii o o iq, Ki Phil Simeone and Bucky Burns, the physical directors in the NVest Haven High School at present, are sitting at the same table with those former All- .Xmerican athletes, Dick Smith, Marty Trotsky, Tiger Flynn, and Sam Anderson. Charlie Misback and Frank Bacon, two famous drummers, are also together at one table along with other members of their respective bands, George Brennan, Bill Potts, Paul Crosby, and Rus Leach. Ellena Crane and Joyce Savage, proprietors of an ice-cream parlor which is the mecca of present high school students, are sitting with Shirley Lohse, the well-known exponent and tutor of Spanish. Several nurses, among whom are Evelyn Scholhamer, Enid VVrozina, and Edna Maynard are also sitting with them. Ruth Coe, the petite songbird of the air, is also present and at the same table with Signe Franz and Helen Wilscan, who at present wish to be called just home girls. UArthur Balmer, the skillful accountant of Sears Roebuck Co., is sitting with George Scott, the financial wizard, John Craigie, the coach of the high school hockey team and member of the New Haven Eagles professional team, and Gordon Moore, the office manager of the General Electric Co. in New Haven. Bob Carlson, the chemist, who has just received the Nobel Prize for his discovery of a new element, is also at their table accompanied by Bob Harrison, his laboratory assistant. This table is completed by Bob Stevenson, the popular actor, and his partner, Bob Gorton. 'tMolly Cocco, the Babe Didrickson of the present time, is likewise at the banquet and seems to derive intense enjoyment from telling of the time when she kept the record of home 1'0O1U work for Miss Schenker, and the arguments she had in performing this duty. Thus stated Bacon in his Advancement of Learning , and how singularly characteristic of Connecticut is this quotation. For three centuries the engine of this state has been slowly making its way along' its perilous path. On this journey obstacles have presented themselves, and the need has arisen for someone to rise to the emergency, remove the obstacles, and prevent this engine from being derailed. Never has this state inet with failure in such crises, primarily because she has had men of keen vision, well-balanced minds, and mature judgment to serve as ballast. In June of the year 1636, after a kaleicloscopic preaching career in England, Holland, and Eoston, Thomas Hooker, an English Puritan, arrived in Connecticut. XVith his followers he settled down in this colony, and during the rest of his life he was the strongest, most effective, and most revered member of it, a famous preacher, and a statesman of genius, He was to Connecticut what John VVin- throp was to Massachusetts, and what Roger XVilliams was to Rhode Island, the trusted leader, the grand old man. He constructed this engine of state, an engine destined to travel for three centuries on a hazardous trip, and, as a result of his efforts, he might well be called the Father of Connecticutf, In 1633 another Englishman, John Davenport, the princely preacheru, as he was called by Cotton Mather, settled in Quinnipiack Cnow New Havenj after a career similar to that of Thomas Hooker in England, Holland, and Boston. From his settlement here until the union of New Haven with Connecticut in 1665 civil life in New Haven was very largely the crystallized thought of one man, Daven- port. His prime motive in government was to establish the law of the Bible over the mundane affairs of men, and his success in this endeavor was culminated by the adoption of the Fundamental Agreementn, an article which made church membership a requisite for civil oflice and voting authority. His characteristic of tenaciously adhering to the casuistical logic of his convictions resulted in his moving to Boston in 1638. This act was the result of his lifelong protestation against the union of New Haven with Connecticut. His was the job to stoke this engine of state, and how well he succeeded is manifested in history. In 1637 education was merely a catch-as-catch-can proposition, but an English Puritan, Ezekiel Cheever, rose to the emergency, and supplied the missing links of state education, those of unity and proper supervision. Education thrived under his leadership and was established as an institution of the state. Ezekiel Cheever is especially renowned for his Accidence , an introduction to the Latin tongue, which work was used for years as a textbook, and which accomplished 1 mimmlll Page 'ummm ll I IInuummniiiiiiiunmuimimiIii1IIIunnumxmII11niIIIImmnuuuIIimnuuxxxmuluuil L 0 G B O 0 iuiiumiiiiiiiiiiiiiiunismuuimm ruiimiiiimmiiiwillum i iiiimm x the organized study of Latin at a time in our country's history when the pursuit of the classical languages was the exception. Close as it came to being derailed by educational poverty, this engine of state was steadied and driven on its way by this man. In l775 the Revolutionary Wai' descended in all its fury upon the colonies. Connecticut's distress paralleled that of the other coloniesg yet Jonathan Trum- bull, the rebel governor and the only chief magistrate at this time who was not an appointee of the king or a loyalist, remained throughout the entire confiict a man with a price on his head. All through this struggle, however, he was so modest and unassuming that he once sent a message asking for a repeal of a law passed without his knowledge, a law which conferred the title of His Excellence on the governor. He observed that high-sounding titles 'fintoxicate the mind . A brief sketch of him in later life is afforded by this excerpt from Voyage Dans L'- Ameriquen by Marquis de Chastelleux. He is over seventy years old, his entire life is devoted to affairs which he loves with a passion whether they be great or smallg or, rather, there are none for him of this latter class . lndeed he steadied this engine of state on its obstacle-strewn journey through the Revo- lutionary NVar. ln this same Revolutionary XVar there arose to prominence a man whose character and life delineate him as one of the Worldls greatest military captains, a man who gave the famous command at llunker Hill, Don't shoot until you see the whites of their eyesng a man of whom one biographer says, f'The reputation for indomitable courage, ready resourcefulness, practical efficiency, sterling in- tegrity, and warm-hearted companionableness that he gained in the Colonial XVars was of invaluable help in the first years of the American Revolution, for it inspired the patriots under his leadership with glowing enthusiasm and a bold confidence in their struggle for freedom. This man was lsrael Putnam, who abandoned a plow to serve his country and state. He became distinguished as an outstanding military captain, whose assistance in recruiting troops was invaluable to Governor Trumbull. In the latter part of the eighteenth century the name of Roger Sherman be- came a synonym for superior statesmanship. New Haven may proudly look back upon him as her first mayor and possibly the greatest statesman in Connecticut history. After his entrance into public life, political honors literally besieged this humble farm boy from Canton. He was a member of the committee to draw up the Declaration of lndependenceg likewise one of the eleven signers of this docuf mentg a member of the first United States Congress, and the possessor of in- numerable other notable ofhces. He was an extraordinary man, a venerable uncorrupted patriot, and one of the six outstanding men who rendered con- spicuous service as statesmen during the Revolutionary period of the formation of the Union. ii i wo' iiiiwiii v iiiiiiiiii 1 llllll Hifi iiiiiii 1 ljflge l l 5 'iii llllll Hiiiiiii iiiiiiiiiiiiii i i ll will 1111 111111 1 1 ' I 11111111111 wwwwwlll L G O O '1'1 111111f1111v Hi ll II1vrX11wwww ini lll in ii ii wi ln 1338 deplorable educational conditions were proving an enormous detri- ment to the youth of the state. .Ns there had been in every previous crisis, so there was now one man who realized the seriousness of the situation and who determined to improve it. This man was Henry llarnard, a native of Connecticut, who had just returned from Europe after a study of European methods of educa- tion. His zealous efforts resulted in the passing of a bill by the General Assembly for the better local supervision of schools. llis next accomplishment was the State Normal School at New Britain which stands today as a tribute to him. He was the tirst United States Commissioner of Education. His best literary elfort, 'lThe journal of Education , is called by Brittanica 'lby far the most valuable work in our language on the history of education . As a result of the diligence, resonrcefulness, and patriotic fervor of such men as l have mentioned, Connecticut this year celebrates the Tercentenary of its foundingg three centuries of peace and conflict, prosperity and depression. wis- dom ancl ignorance. Too little can we honor these men and too little can we realize their true greatness. The state of Connecticut alone remains a litting monument to themg but let us in deep sincerity say of them, Their seed shall remain forever, And their glory shall not be blotted out.
