BASS MILITARY INSTRUCTOR , -- . l i 'T J U .Malory Pay attention, dear Reader, and hear what I say, Here's the history of seniors who're leaving today. It's bad manners to read diaries we often hear, But you can read this one and have no fear. September 14, 1942 Dear Diary, Today I took my first peep on the inside of that building atop West Fulton hill. Boy, that old owl surely cast a wondering :ye on us poor little Freshmen, I couldn't much blame him for giving that gruesome Hoot as he counted 313 strangers passing over his threshold. September 23, 1942 Dear Diary, School has really started now. We were initiated into clubs today. Ohl Will I ever live it down? Thanksgiving Day, 1942 Dear Diary, Well, Thanksgiving Hnally rolled around, and we were given a two-day holiday. If it is a sin to eat too much, I am going to have to pray all day tomorrow. December 7, 1942 Dear Diary, This day, December 7, will live in our memory forever- Dne year ago the Iapanese made a sneak attack on Pearl Harbor. How well we remember this day a year ago when we were called to assemble to hear our President address :he nation-uThe United States is at war with japan. lanuary 1, 1943 Dear Diary, New Year's Day found us, of all places, in school. Father Time and Baby New Year were guests at our house last night, and we were allowed to p1ay until past bedtime. But, I still don't think I deserve those demerits I got for napping in class today. March 20, 1943 Dear Diary, The Spring Carnival was lots of fun. We were proud of our new rulers, even if they did look frightened, September 7, 1943 Dear Diary, This morning the old bell rang again telling us that our second year at West Fulton is just beginning. That old feel- ing came over me again as I saw my old friends, November 30, 1943 Dear Diary, That old owl looks good sitting atop that highest branch. He's up there to attract attention and let the world know that he won the NGIC for football this year. March 30, 1944 Dear Diary, Once again the Spring Carnival has come. Our class worked in team to put our king and queen on top, but when the votes were added up, the Iuniors took the cup. May 12, 1944 Dear Diary, Today all juniors and Seniors were in a trance because tonight they will have their Hrst Iunior-Senior dance. I can hardly wait until next year, but during the meantime, I am going to put in a special request in behalf of all Freshmen and Sophomores. I don't see why we can't have a special dance, too. September 5, 1944 Dear Diary, Today we Iuniors pushed open West Fulton's doors. An- other year of lessons, books, and worries. CBut just between you and me, dear diary,-I-Ia, Hall May 11, 1945 Dear Diary, At last it camefOur First Iunior-Senior dance. Gee, those were our First orchids, and confidentially, dear diary, mine was the prettiest one there. May 31, 1945 Dear Diary, Annual came out today. We were sad and gladisad to think of Seniors' leaving and glad to be remembered in their wills. September 10, 1945 Dear Diary, Don't you think we deserve a cheer? Why? YVe are now dignified Seniors. Well, anyway, we're Seniorsl April 19, 1943 Dear Diary, Act III, Scene 1111 brought down the curtain on our senior play. Maybe it wasn't to Shakespeare's approval, but, anyway, we did our best. October 8, 1946 Dear Diary, Today we received our senior rings. No, the sparkles that kept hurting your eyes weren't falling stars. That was just the flashing of our rings in the sun to get attention. February 6, 1946 Dear Diary, Today we were measured for our caps and gowns. Gosh, until today I didn't really believe Seniors had the big-head, but I guess the tape-measure didn't lie. May 31, 1946 Dear Diary, Well, graduation night is here. There are 129 of us to graduate. Lifel We've been long together Through pleasant and through cloudy weather, 'Tis hard to part when friends are dear, Perhaps 'twill cost a sight, a tear. And if there be 128 other tears falling tonight, there is no :oncealed shame. Instead, we lift our proud heads, For heart and voice would fail me, and foolish tears would flow. It just happened to be one of my sleepless nights, so I pounced upon the idea of counting sheep. One, two, threefu But what in the world was happening? The crazy sheep were not jumping over the fence at all. They were merely taking their own sweet time and crawling under the gate. Remembering that I hadn't siad my prayer, I thought that this might be the reason for the unaccept- able manner of the sheep. So I said my prayers. Now I lay me down to sleep, ' And, God, please make these doggone sheep lump over the fence as they really should Cause if I were a sheep I know l would. Amen. And once more I started counting. But, Lo and behold, I thought my poor eyes were deceiving me after all these years of faithful service, for this was the sight now before me. A Hood of bright lights blinded me for a moment, but when I Finally opened my eyes, I found myself standing in the center of a night club dance Floor. I looked around cautiously and espied Betty johnson, owner of the club, in a corner giving a lecture to her bouncer, Frances Howard. UBuxom Frances had just thrown out that millionaire Fred Crawford, and his business partner, Hubert Cochran, who happened to be one of l-letty's best customers. Betty recognized me immediately and invited me to have din- ner on the house, and also to stay for the main attraction of the evening in which the Opera stars, Barbara Hutchinson and Marjean Turner, sang a duet. With the exception that Marjean sang baritone and Barbara sang soprano, it went off very well. The famous pianist, Mary jim Green, played for them. No sooner had they finished than Hollywood's most noted movie director, Everett Loudermilk, was down on his knees begging them to sign a contract which would present them in his next picture, co- starring Lamar Barton and Charles Phillips. Later, amusing myself with a newspaper that I had found under my table, a few familiar names caught my eye. The headlines read as follows: UVIRGIL BARTLETT, PRESIDENT OF U. S. BY UNANIMOUS VOTE, FAINTS FROM SHOCK. More front-page news was the story of the life-saving act of Ramona Lee. She had landed her plane under diflicult circum- stances in India and had gallantly rescued P. M. Norris, Sheik of Holdemtite. His harem of girls had revolted because they had seen him having lunch with june Smith, who had just stopped over on her travel through Asia. This story had been written by Estelle Dyer, the newspaper reporter who had finally gained a by-line. A little further down I noticed that Barbara Iean Coursey and Elizabeth Davis had been admitted to the Hall of Fame as terpsichoreans. I was glad to see that, too, because the poor things had worked very hard on their dancing. However, if it hadn't been for a few others I know, they probably would not have suc- ceeded. They had a few lessons from Ferrell Cook, the new version of Fred Astaire: Mary Dean Moon, teacher of rumbag Iacqulyn Crowe and Barbara Elliott, bubble dancers in a Bur- lesque Showg Alma Odom, teacher of boogie. had even tried to revise some of thc work of Addie Bishop, famous prize lighter. FOP BC? Glancing over the sports page, I noticed that the Three-Man team had won the championship again this year. Yes, for the third consecutive year Bill Crawford, captain, and Grace Gary and Virginia Akins, tackles, had won the N.G.I.C. for football. Mattie Lou Braswell, lightweight champion boxer, challenged Iosephine Holland, heavyweight champion, to a fight-to-the-finish duel Friday night. And thc same night, Doris Allen will challenge anyone in the audience to stay in the ring with her for Five minutes. Douglas Logan, undertaker, will be on hand in case any accident happens. Before I could finish reading the paper, I was interrupted by a roaring crowd singing For He's a jolly-Good Fellow. They all greeted me with a mile-smile and explained that they were hav- ing a home-coming party. The toast of the party was General Morgan Hawkins, returned veteran, and with him his clinging- vine wife, Barbara Rakestraw. Others included in the party were Dan Gosnel, now an Admiral in the Navyg Private Leonard Keelingg Robert Moore, Seaman First Class in the Merchant Ma- rineg Raymond Smith, famous salesman of Arrow Shirtsg Marion Florence, the radio announcer with the Sleepy-Time Voice: Sara Deal, Navy wife: and Totnmye Reeves, dare-devil driver. Marianne Puckett, who had brought them in her taxi, was also invited to join them. Iust then I was whisked away from the party to meet some famous people. First, I was introduced to the beloved prima donna, Peggy Bennett, Next, I was taken to a table at which were seated several elegantly dressed personages-Iuanita Mcliachen, Americas youngest novelist: Bobbie Maxwell, Miss America of l948g Barbara Pause, outstanding artist, H. G. Cole, an African explorer, and Harold Richardson, developer of Atomic energy. At the next table we talked with New York's most beautiful model, Kathrine Black, and her personal designer, Marilyn Kil- patrick. Their escorts were Robert Hughes, the brilliant historian, and Dan Iordan, post olice clerk. While we were talking with them, some old friends joined us. Pauline Blalock kept remind- ing us of her shiny, polished shoes. Her husband had her polish them every night. The president of the Burgess, just had to tell us the latest news Betty Cofield. Betty had tried a new tactic and it backfired on her. Ellene Chadwick us of a very strange incident that she had Gossip Club, Juanita about the wolf-tamer, on sailor, Cary Cabe, interrupted to inform witnessed one day as she was broiling hamburgers in her little road-side inn. She was serving Harold Dunton, the pool operator, and Virginia Daniel, his bookkeeper, when she was attracted by a farmer, namely, Austin Eason, and the Hermit, Ioseph Surles, indulging in a game of root-the-peg. Ellene also told us that Ed Hayes, the thoughtful little husband, had been by every night to get some hamburgers to take home. She also said that the young bachelor, Wayward McArthur, had visited her quite often at the Road-Side Inn. When a waiter Finally came for the order, it was none other than one of my old classmates, Sam Adams, I took my glass of milk and started wandering around over the floor following the little frilly thing who kept saying, 'tCee-gars, Cigarettes. The voice sounded familiar. lust as I expected, it was Dorothy Fitzgerald. I was asking her about her social life when the music drowned out our voices. I wasn't surprised when I turned and saw the orchestra leaders were Louise jenkins and Iacqueline White- man. Then on the down beat of the music, the little patter of fet brought the chorus girls, Imogene Dupree and Virginia For- rester. The second number on the program was Lillian Craven with her acrobatic troupe. While I was on my own for a while, I decided to do a little in-I specting of Bctty's night club. It was one of those Atomic Age things, so I wasn't the least bit surprised at the articles which I found, For instance, there was a combination barber and beauty shop in a little out-of-the-way corner. As I walked in, I noticed a gruesome grin on Sara Hudlow's face. Known as a satisfying barber, she had many customers. Faye Lester, beauty operator, was giving Betty Wynn. Van Iohnson's secretary, a manicure. Betty Bennett, teacher of Spanish, was waiting for a fingerwave, while Iosephine Demonia, Iim's wife, and Mary Ellington, air hostess, came in to get a steam bath and mud pack. Mach to my surprise, I also saw Harlan Ivie, Treasurer of the United States, patiently waiting his turn to get a hair cut, and after speaking to him, I stumbled over the crowds again and continued with my inspection. There were some gorgeous chandeliers. Betty had told me that she had hired lack Raburn, Verna Bearden, and Bobby Ling, the best electricians in town, to do the job. It wasn't just because they were the only ones in town, either! Seldon Brown, draftsman, had drawn the plans for the night club. Carlos Chalin had done the architecture, and fjust to make him feel betterj it was pretty good, too. I guess being alone wast just too good to be true, because the next thing I remember I was being dragged away again. This time the celebrities were down to my standards of living, so I joined them with joyful enthusiasm. There were Hal Bragg, air- plane designcrg Carroll Crooks, research chemist, who was still trying to discover a new drugg Miriam Carroll, that adorable, mad seientistg Sara Cassell, seamstress, Bill Cole, chemical engineer: and Mattie Lee Shorty Bettis, whose ambition it was to grow up to be a new Empire State Building. There were also Royce Freeman, who had replaced Miss Brooks at West Fultong Ruel Hawkins, stock speculatorg Della Loner, who had had so much trouble trying to Find a secretary that she just decided to be her owng and the life of the partyilrene Hicks, the keeper of the zoo. Irene was showing us how she had to separate some of the rough monkeys when she accidentally twisted too hard on the arm of Billy Kennedy. Billy yelled. About that time several promising nurses came up. They were Sara Norton, Dorothy Matthews, and Lynette Hines-the visiting nurses from Georgia Tech Infirmary. Before poor Billy knew what was happening to him, the nurses had him stretched out on the floor and bound from head to foot. Robert Gooden, psychiatrist, rushed over to see if he could help, and Nolan Garvin, dental technician, exam- ined his remains. Several others came over to see what was causing all the commotion. Eugene Iillison, college professor, and one of his students, Pat Stalnaker, were there, and also Avis Rogers, a teacher. Gwendolyn Rice, the little fire-side Cinderella, was also present with her escort, Hoyt Smith, a salesman, who was her ideal prince charming. Mary Lou Anglin, who had taken Mr. McIlwain's place, and her companion, Hoyt West, sheet metal worker, were there. lust then I heard someone calling my name. I turned to Find Franklin McPherson, department store manager, and his 'lspecialn bookkeeper, Margaret Barnett. They invited me over to their table, and as Margaret was a very special friend of mine, I joined them. W'e had such a lot to talk about that we hardly knew where to start. I asked her about our old friends. She said that she had seen quite a few of them lately. She had been to visit Louise Cole, who had formerly been Mr. Hodges' translator, but was now enrolled in Nettie Thurmon's rest home for old maids, Dorris Reeves was a cook at Georgia Tech Fraternity House. Nor- ma Treadaway had invited her to have dinner with her and her husband. Margaret said it was very good even if it did come out of cans. She said she had been taking dancing lessons from Georgia Poole, president of Arthur Murray's dancing school. She also told me that Iuanita MeBrayer, ambassador, had taken her secretary, Helen jones, and had gone to Mexico. Then she told me that Martha Ann Sammons was a telephone operator, and that Betty Ican Turner, a reducing teacher, and Bertha Williams runs a bachelor's home. I also found that Betty Io Garmon, as man- ager of the Grove Theater, had hired Sybil Oldham as an usherette. And to my surprise, Opal Wilbanks was manager of the Cascade Theater. What a shock to Find that Dot VVright was a parachute maker and I.aZelma Tibbett, a marine's wife. Margaret rattled on with more news of our classmates. Betty Roper is now a famous concert pianist and is at present touring the world, giving benefit shows to war veterans. But to Find that the unexpected bookkeepers, Dorothy Ellison and Iack Lord, and stenographer Io Iones have formed a triple partnership in a pie factory was more than I could take. Margaret was telling me about the new basketball coach, Iimmy Sue Hall, when we were interrupted by a voice from heaven whispering in my ear. I turned to see that glamorous hunk of movie star, Marshall Lee Baxter. When he asked if he could take me home, all I could say was Huba, Hubal As we started out the door, I was so excited that I stumbled over the threshold and fell Hat on my face. When I opened my eyes, all the pretty lights were gone, and in their place was my little old bed lamp. I looked up and saw my mother standing over me laughing. What happened? I solemnly answered, Mother, I had a nightmare. BIBLE B SHETB LL SQUAD Ars! Raw: Barbaia Rakcstraw, Sara Deal. Betty Wynn, Sybil Olrlham, Dot Wright, Icanellc Barton.
