It was too bad that you had to move away just before you were ready to embark upon your Senior year. I'lI try to tell you the highlights of the year without making you too homesick. On September 15, about eight hundred stu- dents ascended the hill to 'begin a year of study and activity. As we viewed the building, we were astounded to see how large it had grown. You remember that two new wings were begun just before school closed last year. Through the fa- miliar door we passed, and gazed on a beautiful new bulletin board. The corridors looked so long that we contemplated purchasing skates to get from one end to the other. You canit imagine the thrill of inspecting the new additions-an audi- torium, a gymnasium, a larger cafeteria, shops, and new class rooms. Our days of building air castles were over, for we now have a modern, well-equipped building-the realization of our dreams. Our faculty was increased by six new mem- bers: lyfiss Hamby, Ilffiss Fitzpatrick, Miss El- rod, Mr. Lunsford, Mr. Reinhold, and Mr. Gibeling. The first few weeks found new clubs and or- ganizations springing up. These included the junto Club, the W. F. Club, the Freshman Girls' Club, and a vast intramural athletic pro- gram, sponsored by the Atlanta Constitution. New members of the Girl Reserve Club, the Hi-Y, and the Beta Club were initiated. Then, Arabella, came September 19. That date doesnlt mean much to you, but to us it meant the opening football game against North Fulton. They beat us, but we scared them almost to death, as we led at the half, 6-0. Even though we didn't win all the games of the season, we had a good team and Iots of fun cheering. We did get a break, when the National Coun- cil of English Teachers decided to meet in At- lanta. As a result, we got a two-day holiday, November 20 and 21. On November 27 we celebrated Thanksgiving. l On November 29, the new auditorium was dedicated. Mr. VVells, members of the Board of Education, County Commissioners, civic leaders of the community, and representatives of school organizations made up the distinguished group of people at the dedication. This dedication was an event that will live in the heart of every West Fultoner. After gathering in the auditorium on lVIonday. December 8, we heard President Roosevelt's speech to Congress, asking for war on Japan. VVe immediately began to assume our obligation by purchasing Defense Stamps. The boys joined the Junior Defense Unit, while the girls began the study of nutrition and home nursing. Later those students who were fifteen years old regis- tered for Civilian Defense. On the 19th of December, we got out of school for a week to celebrate Christmas. Returning on the 28th, we spent New Year's Day, of all places, in school. Arabella, you should have seen all the sleepy heads and heard the various complaints. On january 2, the new gym was officially op- ened when the basketball team played Richard- son High. The last week in February brought the N. G. I. C. Basketball Tournament to our own gym. A heated battle ensued between some of the best teams in the state. The first week of llffarch saw 50-odd candi- dates for the baseball team begin practice under Coach Hansard. The N. G. I. C. trophy had to be won to be added to the two of the previous years. You would have had loads of fun at our spring festival. The Freshman, Sophomore, Junior and Senior classes each put on the most original stunt you can imagine. Of course, the King and Queen election was exciting, and rivalry this year be- tween classes was keener than ever. Following the coronation we had a royal dance in the gym with the King and Queen, and members of the court, leading the grand march. The Juniors outdid themselves at the Junior- Senior Dance. The gym was so beautifully deco- rated and the music swell! Such glamour! Dramatic talent? Well, we know some of the members of the cast will be called to Hollywood after their performance in the Senior Play- i'The Red Spider. In the latter part of April, the annual Govern- ment Inspection of our military unit was held. The boys drilled well and made their usual high rating. Of course, we think the sponsors were prettier than ever. Graduation is almost here, and we are already experiencing the thrills that go with it. We are getting our invitations, planning programs, and the girls are talking about long white dresses and flowers, but I wouldn't say that the boys arenyt just as interested in the clothes proposition, too. It doesnlt seem right that you won't be here to receive your Hsheepskinl' with us, but we do wish you happiness as you receive yours. l'm glad to hear that you have enjoyed the copies of the f'Owl. Sincerely, Willa Mena. l V V V SENIIHI CLASS UFFICERS + JMZOA 'Q X V W WM VVLS1 1 w RLCIXLR Pzfszdent BEATRILI Baooks I nr I'zfszdfn1 NI XRTH x ANN BAIXLR Sznffarj Tlemurel 10 . -j,L 'v' . To belong to the club one must study French. The purposes of the club are to become better acquainted uith each other, to become more familiar with the French language, and to gain something of the flavor which language study brings through intimate contact with another people and civilization. Monthly meetings are held at the school and in the homes of various members. At our meetings we invite French people to talk. XVe sing French songs, play French games. present plays sometimes using pantomime, shadowgraphs and marionettes, learn of French customs, and eat French foods. Some of the highlights of this year were the initiation of the new members at a picnic at North Fulton Park, the entertainment of over a hundred students interested in hearing about bicycling in the French Canadian province of Quebec, and a bicycle trip to a Youth llostel near Atlanta. NVe feel that our contact with the French people has made us more appreciative not only of their great contributions to our civilization, but also more appreciative of other peoples, since we have become more aware of nations other than our own. IN VVITNESS XVHEREOF, we, the undersigned. do attix our seal on this thirty-first day of May in the year of our Lord one thousand nine hundred and forty-two. THE SENIOR CLASS, '42. VVitnesses: Gladys Lewis, Betty Ann Clark. 53 E lllll CLASS Pll0PllllY Having just returned from a business trip to New York on the Eastern Air Lines, I landed at Candler Field. Billy Busby, the pilot, had steered the ship safely home: while Doris Allen, the stewardess, made the trip most enjoyable. They were interested in hearing about some of our former classmates of VVest Fulton whom I had run into while in the metropolitan city. I had seen Martha Britt, one of America's famous actresses, play on Broadway in the season's hit written by the new playwright, Lee Blount. Betty Ann Clark sang at a night club operated by Guy McCurley and Aubrey Barrett. I had noticed in the SunI' that Carolyn Clay and Virginia McArthur were managing a research bureau. Just before I left, I had rushed into Woolworth's for some souvenirs, and whom do you think I saw behind the counter? None other than Geraldine Rayner. I learned from the stewardess that Jake Rose, an N. B. C. announcer, was married to Beatrice Brooks, the star of the Eureka Soap program: and that Allen Bostwick and Edward Buckner were lion tamers for the world's largest circus, owned by Cardestel Adams and Edward Cowan. Can you imagine how surprised I was to find Gladys Lewis also a passenger on the same plane. She had recently been presented the Pulitzer prize for her latest novel. She told me that Melvin Plunkett had been instrumental in getting several of her books published. VVhen I landed at Candler Field I ran into Betty Specht and Jewel Barnett, the famous radio interviewers. From them I learned that John Mayes, a retired business executive, had just left for Florida for his health. He was accompanied by his doctor, Harry Dodd, and a nurse, Ruth Fields. At the newsstand I bought an evening paper from Forrest Pit- tard, and hailed a taxi for the city. I tried desperately to read my paper, but Ellis Reeves, the taxi driver, turned on the radio full blast. Horace Kennedy. I learned, was giving the news for the local station. The last votes had been counted and Ted Fields was elected governor by a landslide. As I unfolded my paper I saw his picture-the governor-elect being congratulated by his campaign managers, Tom NVOotten and Vlfalter Wright. As I rode past the Grove Park Theater I saw in bright lights Saturday's attraction-John Eades' C'1'0s.v1'0ad Follies. To be featured on the show were Aaron Dixon, pianist: Marilyn Bartlett and Camille Holsomback, hillbilly singers: and Fred Stanford and Leamon Wilson, come- dians. From Ellis I learned that Elizabeth Nash was now manager of the Grove. I decided that I must take in the Governor's reception. Roy Hartsfield, the butler, an- nounced my arrival, Dr. Ashford Stalnaker, president of Georgia Tech, was first to greet me. He told me that at Tech he had the leading football coach, Billy Walraven. I glanced around to see if I could recognize any of my other former classmates. I had no trouble recognizing Norman Gray, the cameraman for the largest paper, taking pictures of the elab- orate celebration. Mary Florence Sosebee, the society editor, and Marilyn Ritchie, a feature columnist, were also on hand. Standing in a corner chattering were Robert Jones, winner of the Nobel prize for science: Betty Lou Simpkins, best dressed woman of the year: and Martha Russell, president of the State Garden Club. I had to ask the name of the dignified, solemn person who approached 1ne. VVhy of course, it was Braxton VVooten, the leading mortician of Bolton. To the receiving line I made my way, extending my congratulations to the governor. He showed me a cablegram from Charles Burgess and David Loner, the consul and the attache of the American Legation to London. Glynn Rivers, a leading actor of Hollywood, had tele- 54 llllt CLASS PRUPIIEUY graphed congratulations. Roger Smith, a tobacco farmer of South Georgia, had sent a tel- gram expressing his delight and asking the governor for new legislation for the farmers. Ralph Driskell, a Wall Street broker, had telephoned to express his congratulations, so the governor-elect told me. As I made my way down the receiving line I chatted with Alice Triplett, state librarian, Walt Crawford, United States Senator, Ray White, State School Superintendentg James Ledbetter and Daisy Gibson, state legislators, and Guy Bowles, Com- missioner of the Department of Public Safety. The distinguished Solicitor General, Ray Smith, was also present. After the ordeal of the receiving line, I turned my attention to the music of the orchestra which was under the direction of Wesley Rucker. I learned that the selection being played was Guy Haynie's latest song hit, and that on less formal occasions, Martha Ann Baker and Marie Dennis appeared with the orchestra as vocalists. Still listening to the soft sweet strains, I made my way to a beautifully appointed table for a cup of punch to quench my thirst. Mary Goff, a well-known cateress, and her assistant, Isabel Mayo, had been called in for the occasion. As I was enjoying my punch, Beth Nicholas walked up. I learned that she had been teaching at our old Alma Mater, West Fulton, for some time. Since I new that she could tell me about many of our former classmates, I enticed her away to a quiet corner for a long chat. She boasted of a very active P.-T. A. under the presidency of our former classmate, Lena Ruth Thomas, and of a splendid cafeteria under the supervision of another former classmate, Marion Williams. Edwin Wiley, I learned, was president of the Civic League, and his young son now attending West Fulton was causing the teachers plenty of worry. She told me that Virginia Conn, Inez Williamson, Pauline Presnell, Marjorie Walker, Nona Hasty and Beverly Griggs were married and happily settled in the community. She asked me if I knew that Juanita Tyner was a missionary to China and that Ethel Bishop was serving as her secretary. I was surprised to learn that Aston Abernathy, Thomas McGritT, and Edward Williams were managers of the neighborhood chai11 grocery store. Mary Pelfrey, Matilda Shamblee, and Betty Wallace, I learned, were operating the most elite beauty shop of the community. According to best sources of information, Frances Couey, Mildred Greene, Virginia Johns, Ida Hamlett, Kate Ashe, and Marthaleen Sims had married and moved away. Beth said that if I should have any car trouble that she would highly recommend A. VV. Sullivan as a mechanic. He operated an up-to-date garage, and had as assistants Billy Brown, Benjamin Knight, and Haskin Jenkins. Herbert Gary, she said, was operating a model dairy. Exclusive fashion magazines, my former classmate told me, were carrying advertisements of clothes designed by Virginia Logan and Rachel Roddy. I found out that Martha Landers, Ruth Plunkett, Elizabeth Tillery, VVillie Love Tolbert, and Betty VValker were prominent in the Business and Professional Woman's Club. Of Grady VVhite there was no news. How disgraceful to stay so long at a reception! I told the school mistress how much I enjoyed seeing her and hearing about all the former classmates. She invited me back to West Fulton, but I was afraid the memories would be too much for me, for the things I had just learned occupied my thoughts for many days to come as I went about my work. 55 ,Q AR Q X T ' .
