understanding about the whole matter. After finishing my work, I went out to dinner with Beverly Flick, one of the office secretaries. We ate at a place owned by June English, one of our former class- mates. We talked to June for awhile about our school days and she told us that she had twin girls. After saying good -by to June, Bev and I went to our seperate homes. I went home and started to get ready for the ball. The taxi arrived at8:30 and after I seated myself I dis- covered the driver was Robert Flanigan. Bob didn't realize who I was but after testing his memory he recalled my name. We chatted about our school days and before I knew it, we were at the Waldorf. After checking my coat, the hostess approached and I discovered it was the famous dramatist, Jolly Smith. I talked to her for a few minutes and she told me that Gerry Daugherty was teaching music at Westminster College. Since Jolly had other duties she left me to attend to other guests. The orchestra was playing a waltz and I decided to get a picture of it. As the leader turned to face my camera I saw to my great surprise that the leader was Carol Bargerstock. I talked to Carol for awhile and she told me that Dale Ruth, the screaming idol of millions of teenagers, was also on the program. After leaving Carol l noticed this tall distinguished looking fellow talking to several young women. There was no mistaking who it was. l knew it was William Lorenzetti, the bachelor politician who just had been elected to Con- gress. I talked to William and he told me that Bill Blose was teach- ing science at W,W.F. Having taken all the pictures I wanted I went home. As I unlatched the door I found a letter from one of my school friends, Sally Morrison Claypoole. She told me that the twins were fine, and that her family had just moved into their new home. Pick- ing up the sports section of the evening paper I saw that jim Smith, the famous wrestler had just won the wor1d's championship. PROPHET, Brenda Bowser. . . 65

F I woke up one moming in May, 1967, feeling bright and cheer- ful. Ihad an assignment to photograph the annual Spring Ball at the Waldorf given by the wealthy Rockefellers. I went down town and purchased an evening gown in one of New York's classiest shops. The owner was Mary McCoy, the former Mary Shank. I talked with her a while and she told me that Sandra Smith Bowser was her private secretary. After 1 left the shop, I went to the Smith-Swigart beauty salon, which was owned and operated by Judy Smith and Shirley Swi- gart. While Iiwas there, I picked up the morning newspaper and spread all over the front page were pictures of three of my former classmates, Melvin McCue, Roy Bowser, and Bill Renwick. It seems that they had just landed on the planet Mars. Melvin was the pilot and Bill the Co-pilot. Roy was in charge of radar. After leaving the beauty salon I started for my office on the East side. While stopped at a stop light a tractor -trailer, operated by Dan Bowser, ran into me. I wasn't hurt but I was a little shaken from the accident. Policeman, Bill Bono, drove me to Mercy hospital where I was given something to calm my nerves. After talking to the head nurse, Barbara Good, she told me that Bev Minteer Crawford was a nurse in the same hos- pital. Jackie Pfaff also was a brain surgeon in this hospital. As I was about to leave 1 noticed a young woman working with some small children in a room adjoining the lobby. I recognized her as Jean Shearer, a former classmate at W,l-LS. Jean was a speech therapist. I talked to her for awhile and she told me that Darla Moorhead Mechling lived in Pittsburgh and was the mother of three darling children. She also told me that Esther Toy was the Dean of Women at Penn State University. As I left the hospital I passed a church from where beautiful strains of music were coming. I looked in and there at the organ sat Ruth Smith. I didn't want her to quit playing so I left the church without being seen. I finally made it to my office about three o'c1ock. My boss, John Hoyt, editor-in-chief of Look Magazine, was very 64
