F I woke up one moming in May, 1967, feeling bright and cheer- ful. Ihad an assignment to photograph the annual Spring Ball at the Waldorf given by the wealthy Rockefellers. I went down town and purchased an evening gown in one of New York's classiest shops. The owner was Mary McCoy, the former Mary Shank. I talked with her a while and she told me that Sandra Smith Bowser was her private secretary. After 1 left the shop, I went to the Smith-Swigart beauty salon, which was owned and operated by Judy Smith and Shirley Swi- gart. While Iiwas there, I picked up the morning newspaper and spread all over the front page were pictures of three of my former classmates, Melvin McCue, Roy Bowser, and Bill Renwick. It seems that they had just landed on the planet Mars. Melvin was the pilot and Bill the Co-pilot. Roy was in charge of radar. After leaving the beauty salon I started for my office on the East side. While stopped at a stop light a tractor -trailer, operated by Dan Bowser, ran into me. I wasn't hurt but I was a little shaken from the accident. Policeman, Bill Bono, drove me to Mercy hospital where I was given something to calm my nerves. After talking to the head nurse, Barbara Good, she told me that Bev Minteer Crawford was a nurse in the same hos- pital. Jackie Pfaff also was a brain surgeon in this hospital. As I was about to leave 1 noticed a young woman working with some small children in a room adjoining the lobby. I recognized her as Jean Shearer, a former classmate at W,l-LS. Jean was a speech therapist. I talked to her for awhile and she told me that Darla Moorhead Mechling lived in Pittsburgh and was the mother of three darling children. She also told me that Esther Toy was the Dean of Women at Penn State University. As I left the hospital I passed a church from where beautiful strains of music were coming. I looked in and there at the organ sat Ruth Smith. I didn't want her to quit playing so I left the church without being seen. I finally made it to my office about three o'c1ock. My boss, John Hoyt, editor-in-chief of Look Magazine, was very 64
