We organized again and this time we elected Jack McGrady president' Rosanna Shearer vice president' Arbutus Anthony secretary' and can Bowser treasurer. One of the real events of this term was the selection of our class rings After this exciting event the class presented Little Miss Fortune with Arbutus Anthony and jack McGrady playing the leading roles. Miss Vinton directed the play 'for us. On May 23 our class was glad to serve as hostess for the unior-Senior Prom When the final spring examinations were over we were proud that another step had been attained. September found us once again beginning our work toward the accomplish- ment of the last big step. At our first meeting we selected as our leaders for the term: ack McGrady president' Harold Resinger vice president' Ma elle Bundy secretary' ean Bowser treasurer' and Miss Stockdale as our senior advisor The year lbrought for us much work but many happy experiences too O October 27 we sponsored a Hallowe en dance for the entire 'high school. All of us 'will remember for a long time the good t-imes we had stringing leaves for the decorations and making the ot-her necessary preparations for the party. On November 7 we presented our senior play Young Smitty starring ack McGrady as Smitty. Miss Stockdale directed the play and assisted us in its presentation. anuary 3, is another memorable date in our senior history, since thatvevening we sponsored a New Year's dance for the entire student body. The juniors helped us to bring the year to a most happy conclusion by the junior- Senior Prom which they presented in our honor. The fourth and final step in our high school ladder has been achieved: but on this same ladder we hope to climb 'higher and higher, because we believe that our foundation is solid. 1 ' : i , : ' i . i 3 - i X , . . , ' ' Q . Mr. Kyle was captain of twenty-five members in one stateroom and Mrs. Mc- Cullough was co-captain with thirty-seven in another After we became or- ganized our officers were Dorothy Bargerstock president' Charles Ruth vice- president- Juanita Claypoole secretary' Edgar Leard treasurer. We embarked on two exciting events during the year. Everyone arrived on ship came to port for summer vacation we held a treasure hunt. ln September of l940 we took our trusty little barque from dry-doclc and chartered a new and better course. We elected officers again who were Bette Fullerton president' Edgar Leard vice-president' Marilyn Shearer treasurer' and Dorothy Bargerstock secretary. A few days of rough ,ailing were caused by several cases of infantile paralysis. We were also delayed in many ports by the holidays but we always began our voyage much refreshed On May I7 we locked our books in the brig and held a sophomore hop. Retiring again below deck we resumed our course over the knowledge 'waves anchoring on une 4 to store provisions for our sailing in the following September. An early start was made this year on September 2, ibut we found our crew greatly diminished. We gave contributions to the army, the CCC, and even the nuptial plane. Others were employed, and still others left our ranks to join different ships of learning. We are now thirty-nine in number. Our officers for this year are Edgar Leard, president: Dorothy Bargerstock, vice-president Marilyn Shearer, secretary: Robert Foringer, treasurerg lla Benton, chaplain and Thomas Peterson tax collector On April I7 everyone rolled out on deck to make the junior play a success The play was titled Spring Fever. Mr. Leard was our very able director The unior-Senior Prom, held on May I5, was another diversion from our maps and charts. We had an orchestra on board for entertainmentg while everyone appeared, dressed in his best bib and tucker Winding up our curriculum for the year, thirty-nine seasiclc gobs trudged hopefully down the gangplank for a short vacation beginning in May. Next September we -hope to see our entire crew on board with their smiling faces peering from the port-holes. We are all going to strive for a higher berth deck for a Ha'llowe'en party, sponsored by the seniors. On the day before our . J ' X J D So , . ' Vg ,. l . . . . 'anchors aweigh! The officers were commissioned as follows: President ......... ............... D ale Lewis Vice President . . . . . . George Gaiser Treasurer ...... . . . Eleanor Collar Secretary ...... .... L ois Leard Chaplain .....................,.... Paul Long The parts of the school year which brought joy to the regiment were the furloughs: Institute Thanksgiving Christmas and Easter. To the army activi- ties the freshmen contributed three girls to the girls basketball team two boys to the boys basketball team and eleven girls to the girls glee club. On May I4 I94I the regiment held its party in the gymnasium. At the beginning of the party we had a scavenger hunt. During the latter part of the evening we enjoyed several other games. After serving refreshments we left looking for- ward to the sophomore hop which was to 'be held the following Saturday evening. After struggling through the examinations, we all rejoiced as our summer furlough came around again. ln the autumn of '41, the sophomore class again halted their regiment at Worthington West Franklin High School with their commissioned officers: President ........................ Mont Bowser Vice President ................... George Gaiser Treasurer ................ ...... a mes Henry Secretary .......................... Lois Leard We have contributed three girls to the girls' glee club and six boys to the boys' chorus. Eight girls and two boys have given their services to the basketball team. One 'member 'belongs to the Varsity W club and two are cheer-leaders. Qur commissioned officer, Colonel Vinton, left to command a regiment in another part of the state and Colonel Tuhovak was assigned to be our superior. We hope to keep the regiment colors, blue and gold, brightly waving throughout the entire period of service. two buck privates have joined the regiment, and four others have left it: hence 5 ' I J Y l.:E'V .Q -. How proud and eager we were to discover what the high school career had in store for each one of us. We started this journey which then seemed so long under the able direction of Mr. Henry our home room teacher. While we sincerely regretted losing Mr. Henry s help when he left to assume another position we were glad to welcome again as our homeroom advisor Mr. Good who had been our homeroom teacher for the last two years that we were in the grades. The first 'big event of our career was the election of the following class officers: Robert Baird president' ack Butler vice president' Irene Branan secretary' Dean Cooper treasurer' Eunice Milligan chaplain Smith left our group to find work on his father s farm. We were glad to wel- come to our group Betty Emigh who had attended Kittanning during the first part of the term. The year has afforded us a variety of activities to add additional interest to our usual work. We sponsored two assemblies. ln one of the assemblies we featured a question bee with Robert Baird as Dr. Dizz. In our second assembly we presented some short humorous plays. We enjoyed and appreciated too the Hallowe en and New Year s dances sponsored by the seniors. Variety and interest were added to our English class when Miss Mitchell our teacher for the first semester was replaced by Miss Leslie the new music teacher. It has been a happy year and we believe that it has been a profitable one too. We are looking forward with eager anticipation to our next term when we shall no longer be the little freshies but rather we shall be the mighty sophomores of the Worthington-West Franklin High School. Our losing streak was all the more heart breaking because some of the games were lost by only a few points. In spite of inexperience loss of players and other handicaps the record for the season was seven won and seven lost. This record should 'be much better next year since many received valuable experience that should be beneficial in the future. Another bright spot is the fact that many of the girls playing this year were sophomores and have two more seasons ahead. Leroy Bundy ' i v H BOYS BASKETBALL Prospects for a successful 41 42 basketball season were very good even from the beginning of school since we were to have back six lettermen from the previous season ln addition to some valuable reserves When school started however one letter man was missing and one reserve from the previous squad Sad news was also to be ours as one of our most ardent fans Louis Nlauthe was seriously injured in an automobile accident Louis was more than a fan He was a sports reporter prophet manager and spectator deluxe all in one His interest and influence was sadly missed Nine successive games were ton before tasting defeat East Brady Elder all beaten by large scores Dayton was beaten twice with some difficulty in the first game when we won by two points Winfield with Keasey playing a great offensive game proved a hard nut to crack but fell by a narrow margin of one pomt Evans City a W P l A L representative and leader in their section then met and defeated us on our ovsn floor 38 22 Shooting ability was much lack ing in the last half for us while Marburger of Evans City seemed to have all kinds of luck in scoring 22 of hrs teams points Victory was ours again but only for a brief spell. Brum and Lhicora were met and defeated by large margins and then defeat came again. Perhaps our hardest blow was when we were beaten by only one point by Karns City who later became champions of the Butler County League. On the Evans City floor in a game in which we were in the running right up until the end and in which captain Benton iheld sharpshooter Marburger to ten points victory was not to be ours' we fell 4l-33. Rimersburg Winfield Penn Concord Bruin and Chicora were then met and defeated in order. The majority of the wins were by large margins' largest of which was the 70-I2 score of the Concord game. The last game of the season was one long to be remembered. If we won we could tie Karns City for the league lead and championship of our section. The shooting ability of Beck and Salsgiver was too much for us however and we-fell 33-24 Our ability to locate the hoop in the second half was once again a difficulty we could not overcome. In the Armstrong County tournament we were defeated by Freeport. the winner of the tournament' and then in the consolation game by Kittanmngs veteran team. Our record for the season stood at I7 wins and 4 losses and two losses in tournament play. Five players will be lost by graduation, and five will be back for next season, we hope. I I - i i E . .
