STAFF ,.,i-KF, a ef.-sa Uri ' 5- ob Harris VORKING HARD: Student teachers Mr. Gary Leach, Ms. Phyllis Hubbard, nd Mr. Chuck Graham are working toward their degrees in Education from tppalachain State University. Their supervising teachers were Mr. McConnell, lrs. Barlow, and Mrs. Hemrick. 3, Reaching Goal By Anna Howell One of the most difficult as- pects of receiving a Bachelor's degree in Education is student teaching. Three student teach- ers from Appalachian State University were working for that degree this past fall. Mr. Chuck Graham was trying to get his Bachelor of Science in Health Education. I've learned more about student attitudes and the teaching process in my fifteen weeks at West than in four years of college, said Mr. Graham. He taught Health, First Aid, and also worked with the .lu- nior Varsity level of girl's vol- leyball and basketball. Ms. Phyllis Hubbard worked with Mrs. Carolyn Barlow dur- ing her fifteen weeks. I gradually took over the class load of Mrs. Barlow, then for nine weeks I carried out all the duties of a regular teacher, stated Ms. Hubbard. g'You take on the total re- sponsibility ofthe teacher. You organize and plan for each day as well as teach. This is Mr. Gary Leach's description of a student teacher. Mr. Leach worked with Mr. McConnell to get his Bachelor of Science in Physical Educa- tion. He also helped coach var- sity football and girls' junior varsity basketball. All three students teachers enjoyed their time spent at West. Ms. Hubbard summed it up, saying, This is something you cannot learn in collegef' L.. But the people who keep things straight here at West know how its done. Their whole day was hectic, working from the time they got to West to open the school for us until the time they left which was after the last person had gone. Our school keepers are very dedicated to their job. You might even think they were more dedicated than some of West's stu- dents.
