.via A CUT ABOVE: Julie Hall concentrates on her pattern for Bermuda shorts as she cuts it out. Students in Mrs. Edwards's and Mrs. Waters's Senior Home Economics classes spent most of first quarter designing their required bathrobe and making a garment of their choice. Students chose from jumpers, boxer shorts, and skirts, jackets, jams and various other clothing items. A 'Ffuchf 'I Class - By Ashley Orrell he entire life of a school is centered around the classroom. This past year the students and faculty of West expressed their concern for academic achievement. New programs to help motivate students added extra incentive for many. Added motivation such as ice cream parties, special recognition on hallway bulletin boards and certifi- cates of recognition were all it took to set many students sailing towards achieving their goals. Travella Robinson said, The special attention you get by receiving awards helps me to strive for better grades and put in more study timef' While setting and reaching new goals, the student body continued to show interest in keeping a variety of courses open. The curriculum allowed participation in areas of vocational training as well as academically challenging classes. Advanced Biology appeared on the schedules of ten students this yearg just enough to form the class which has not been a part of the curriculum in three years. When art classes, physical science classes and social studies classes were overflowing with students, three teachers were added to the staff. Mrs. Melfrose Buchanan and Mr. John Fox each taught an Art I class. Mr. Lee Poe was added to the science department. Mrs. Barbara Biedney was again among the social studies department staff. The Career Center offered a variety of both vocational and academically challenging classes. One-hundred and sixty-eight students took advantage of these options and traveled to Career Center daily. Amy Mason commented, I think that the Career Center is a great school to have in the school system because it gives people a chance to take classes that help their futuref, Through the motivation program, participation in the Career Center classes and the variety of courses offered, students were encouraged to set goals that would help them to attain their potential as students and as future members of the work force. 46 Academics Divider

Stu- dents in Mrs. Melvefs biology classes learned things beyond belief in the areas of cell structure, genetics, botany and zoology. 4 - ,ifiiiizl fggepfzzzafgzszmzim 7 wifi.:,'Itgi3,131niiz2m,mi:za.ML, V A , ww ze 1i3.gziiiiZ5h iEJe:izfQ?f3?::iz1fFwi-5my?ff.eiS21i'222g223t::::st-gf ' f f izsfkiiffi it f itzfzifi-5: K - it nga i'3:jg,g ,' 3 1 1 V gsfiiiizjiflhi ' it, 2' N t iiztiigsr.4,4qigtiigfgggpiziain- W ,, W
