B mi W Z ag. W--V -f GETTING A KICK OUT OF LIFE: Will Corrum, a blue belt, demonstrates a kick. Will is a member at Karate International in Winston-Salem. The martial arts was a great way to keep fit. W 1 I I By Korey Shronts at? Out of shape? Not West For- syth students. The prospect of stay- ing slim and in good health was an ideal goal for students at West. Weightlift- ing, aerobics, running, and martial arts were a number of ways students stayed in shape during the year. Why would someone engage in strenu- ous activities? To stay fit of course, but there were other reasons. Carol Samuelson lifted weights to work out frustrations and to keep in shapef' Members of the varsity and junior varsity basketball teams were encouraged to stay fit throughout the year. Mr. Hurley said, The basketball play- ers are asked to keep log books in which they record their workouts in the off-sea- son. They also participate in the summer league in Winston-Salem and many took part in our school conditioning program. We encourage them to work on weights and basketball skills during the off-season. Most of them do and this has helped our program. Mrs. Gilbert doesn't put her athletes on 38fF1tness a training program, but she does discuss with them how important diet can be to help their performance. Even teachers weren't left out of the health craze. Mr. Newton had this to say, I, for the last ten years or so, run four or five days per week averaging 30-40 miles in a week's time. I also enter four to six road races per year. Staying fit could be a tedious process. In order to get any results from excercising, a routine must be followed. Carol Samuelson commented, The first time I went in to Clemmons Nautilus they showed me a normal workout for a typical female and from that I have adapt- ed a routine with equal upper and lower body excercisesf' Though the work was hard, the benefits were worth it. Whether students set indi- vidual goals and maintained a personal conditioning program, or worked out to coincide with a team sport, fitness was definitely in . NOTEWORTHY COLLECTION: Some of the big- gest albums of the year were by Journey, Bon Jovi, Madonna, Billy Idol, Heart, Peter Gabriel, and Phil Collins. Collecting albums could become an expen- sive hobby considering some albums cost up to ten dollars. .9-X ga 5 Rob Harris CNE FOR THE RE CRD By Terri Hodges and Teresa Shutt want my MTV! was heard by many students throughout the year. People were definitely watching MTV this past year. 99'Zp of the students surveyed said they did watch MTV from time to time. Shannon Pugh, a senior and also chore- ographer for the Titanides, commented, I enjoy watching MTV, the videos, so I can catch the new dance steps. I watch about an average of one hour a day. However, others watched it only be- cause it was something to do. Joy Be- shears, a junior, stated, I watch MTV, but most of the time itis only because I'm bored. Whether students were watching MTV or not, videos seemed to be the hot- test thing on the tube. Students were also surveyed to find out what radio station they tuned in to the most. 65'Za off those who responded to the 40 f Music survey preferred the new radio station, WKRR Rock 92, over any other station. Gareth Fell, a senior, told why he lis- tened to WKRR 92.3 FM, I listen to Rock 92 because they have a wide variety of music ranging from the 60's, 70's, and 80's. However they could play more thrash metal. Upcoming concerts had many students sleeping out overnight in all types of weather just to get good tickets so they could see their favorite performers. After having waited outside so long to get tickets, thousands of students gathered at coliseums as far north as New York, and as far south as Florida to hear their favorite bands perform live. Marlo Trotta, a junior, attended eleven concerts. She explained why she attended so many concerts by saying, There's a lot of reasons, but mostly because it's a way to let loose and have fun. At concerts I can get completely crazy and nobody cares, because they're doing the same thing! Not only was the school breaking re- cords, but the music industry broke a few records of its own. The group Bon Jovi became the first heavy metal band to hit the singles chart in 1986 with You Give Love a Bad Name . Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band Live, 1975-1985 went to number one on the album chart its first week out. Whitney Houston's album, Whitney Houston, was named album of the year for 1986 and she was named female artist oft the year. By the end of the 1986-87 school year, students had not quite gotten their fill of music. As students left the parking lot and headed for home, they had their radios blasting, and their heads bobbing to the beat of the music. It was more than ob- voious that rock'n roll was definitely here to stay.
