C.O. Matthews WE'RE NUMBER ONE: Rob Mothershed, Eliza- beth Faircloth, Sherrill McSwain, Jodi Cornatzer, Julie Morris, Jenny Hartness and Angela Voss cheer at the pep rally. The spirited Class of '87 was the largest graduating class West Forsyth has ever had. HOME COOKIN': The future Homemakers of America, Tara Hughes and Dana Farmer, put up the banner their club made for the competition. Unfor- tuneatly, their banner was disqualified because they did not follow the conference rule which forbids the use of the opponent's team mascot name. HIGH FLYIN' SPIRIT By Karen Floer t is not uncommon to see students around West Forsyth dressed strange- ly during one certain week of each year. The week of October 20-24, 1986 was Spirit Week. Spirit Week measured the school spirit of all the students. Monday was Club Day. Students partic- ipated by wearing the t-shirts and sweat- shirts they purchased from the different clubs to which they belonged. Tuesday was College Day. As one walked around cam- pus, he saw different shirts and sweatshirts from every school or college imaginable. Wednesday was Beach Day. Students par- ticipated by wearing sunglasses, shorts, t- shirts, and putting sunscreen on their noses. Stacey Jones wore this kind of out- fit, even though the temperature outside was 55 and did not feel like the beach. When asked why she went all-out and dressed up so much she said, It just gives me the feeling that I am at the beach, or getting ready to gof' Green, white, and gold covered the cam- pus on Thursday, as it was School Colors Day. Many students were seen wearing white pants, a green shirt, and yellow ac- cessories. Finally, on Friday, each class was represented by a different color. The senior color was green, the juniors donned yellow, the sophomores wore white, and the freshmen sported gold. At 1:30 p.m. on Friday, October 24, 1986, a pep rally was held. Fifth and sixth periods were shortened, and students went to cheer on their respective graduating class and the varsity football team. The homecoming game was against Davie High School, and West won 24-17. That night at the football game, helium balloons were released as the varsity foot- ball team ran onto the field. The balloons were sold in the concession stand during Spirit Week for 25st each. Sophomores came in first place with the purchase of 5127.75 worth of balloons, juniors came in second, freshmen came in third and the Class of '87 came in last. Spirit Week was a successful event to some extent. When asked what they thought about Spirit Week, Dianne Capps replied, It was an exciting event for those who participated, but not that many peo- ple did. Tamara Glascoe added, I think it would have been more successful if it had been more publicized. I have a couple more years left here at West and I am going to try to improve Spirit Week while I am heref' Even though some students felt that Spirit Week was not as successful as they thought it would be, it was a good idea to boost the way students felt for their school and to see actually how much school spirit each and every student had. On October 15, 1986 the student body congratulated the ladies who were chosen as the Court Representa- tives for Homecoming 1986. April Gam- ble, chosen to represent the Junior class said I felt wonderful that day and it was an honor to be on the Homecoming Court for two years. The atmosphere was greatf' Homecoming excitement began October 24, 1986. What a week! What fun! What memories! Spirit Week led up to the Homecoming activities. Throughout the week, the Stu- dent Leadership Committee sold balloons to determine which class had the most spirit. The sophomores bought 5127.75, giving them top billing in the spirit depart- ment. Another contest was held between clubs to see which could make the most attractive banner for the football game. The Key Club took first place with their banner stating, Titans, We're Keyed Up For You. Friday afternoon a pep rally was held in the football stadium to get the football team prepared for the battle with undefeated Davie. Finally, 8:00 P.M. arrived. After indi- vidual introductions of Senior players, the football team approached the field and broke the banner. At that moment the 250 helium balloons sold for Spirit Week were released into the air by Titanides and fans. Rising to the occasion, the night had just begun. The Homecoming game was one of the most exciting games of the season. West Forsyth would carry the title of conference champions by defeating Davie, which they did 24-17. The half time activities were great fun for everyone. All members of the court for Homecoming '86 were escorted to the field by their date for the evening. O.K. West donated a white arch for the event, and Marie's Florist donated all the flowers for the special occasion. Mrs. Judy Felder, one of many coordinaters of Homecoming, felt like 'glt was very successful and the student body represented themselves well. Without the participation, time, and effort of several other teachers, Homecoming would not have gone over as smoothly. Every class was represented on the court. Presentation began with the Fresh- men and led up to the Senior court mem- bers. Each Senior court member was es- corted off the field into one of the nine cars provided by the Corvette Club and parents. Mrs. Marvorene Edwards said, Having the automobiles brings back the spirit of Homecoming, and it emphasized the importance of Senior girls. Mrs. Cin- dy Zimmerman spent many hectic days lining up the cars for the event and re- marked, I enjoyed working with the '86 Homecoming Court because everyone worked so well together, and also it is so important to those who are nominated. The Homecoming Court was not pre- sented again at the dance as had been done in previous years. Instead, Once, Twice, Three Times A Lady', by Lionel Richie was dedicated to them. The night ended with a bang when balloons were released from the top of the gym. Decorations were taken home as souvenirs. The feeling and memories of Homecoming would not soon be forgotten. 2lfHomecom1ng
