1 WINTER WONDERLAND: On January 22, 1987, North Carolina residents woke to find themselves in the middle of the worst snowstorm this state has seen in 57 years. Bad weather conditions caused students and teachers to miss school for seven consecutive days. This tied the Winston-Salem Forsyth County School System record for the most days missed in one year, not to mention at one time. Two weeks later, school was once again cancelled for four days due to an icefhail storm. This put the total number of days missed at 11, causing students to attend school on Saturday, February 21, 1987, and also causing them to have a shortened Easter vacation. However, most students like Carol, Frank, and Cheryl Samuelson spent their time away from school building Snowmen, relaxing, and worrying about make-up days in June. an Carol Samuel RECORD STANDARDS SET By Kelle Owens 987 was a year in which records were broken and new standards were set. It was a time of transition for many and a time of sadness for others. Freshmen and sophomores found themselves once again adjusting to new policies and people, ju- niors were counting the days until they would be the seniorsn and the Class of 1987 was preparing to start a new life. A life that would take them away from the areas they grew up in and away from the structured routine of the school day. The records that will remain imprinted in our memories are records that made 1987 spe- cial to us and to those around us. Many will long remember waking up on January 22, 1987 to find that the Pied- mont portion of North Carolina had re- ceived 15 -17,' of snow in less than 24 hours. This was recorded as the largest snowfall accumulation the Piedmont has seen in 57 years, and the tenth worst since weather records began in 1903. This caused students and teachers to be the re- cipients of an unexpected vacation which lasted for seven consecutive school days, a record in itself. After returning to school for only 10 days, mother nature struck again. This time, only four consecutive school days 220fClosing were missed, surpassing the Winston-Sa- lemfForsyth County School System re- cord for most snow days missed in one year , set during the 1984-85 school year with a total of seven days. Seniors and school administrators began to worry that graduation would need to be postponed. Before a decision could be reached, stu- dents were once again forced to stay home due to more snow. Although a make-up day was planned for Saturday, February 28, 1987, hazardous weather conditions cancelled these plans as well. While North Carolina was in awe over the January 22, 1987 snowstorms, it was also impressed by the fact that three North Carolina-made movies were ranked among the top ten nationwide. Number one for two weeks in a row was Critical Condition, filmed in High Point. Holding down the number six spot was The Bed- room Window, featuring scenes filmed at the Stevens Center for Fine Arts, and claiming the tenth position was Crimes of the Heart, filmed in Southport, North Carolina. These movies brought filmmak- ers from all over the world to North Caro- lina in search of the perfect setting . This perfect setting also contained its fair share of realities. The Piedmont was the victim of a decision made by the R.J. ReynoldsfNabisco Corporation to move their multi-million dollar world headquar- ters to Atlanta, Georgia. The purpose of this move, according to F. Ross Johnson, new corporate president, was to get away from the bucolic, backwoods area of North Carolina and into the more sophis- ticated area of Atlanta. Wake Forest Uni- versity benefitted handsomely from the move, receiving the S40 million office complex located on R.J. Reynolds Drive. Residents of the Clemmons community expressed their feelings when they voted to incorporate. There was no question that the time for incorporation had arrived. 1757 residents voted for the proposal, while only 712 cast ballots against it. With a better than two to one ratio, Clemmons became the 66th largest municipality in the state. Record weather, from drought to giant snowfalls. Record economic changes, from corporate moves to huge increases in Dow Jones averages. Record individual and team achievement from a conference championship' season for football and cross country to a Morehead Scholarship for Donnie Esposito. These were the framework for our lives in and out of school. These were the backdrop for our year as we Recorded It Live in '87.

COLOPHON The 1987 Cronus was printed by Jostens Printing and Publishing of Clarksville, Tennessee. The theme was conceived by the 30 members of the yearbook staff. Cover and endsheet designs were created and designed by a joint ef- fort of Kelle Owens and Mark Cartner. Art was rendered and final- ized by the J ostens Creative Services Department. The cover is printed in green 516, gold foil 380, and pale gold 328. The endsheets are light gold printed on light beige 285. The paper is 80 pound weight number 191 gloss enamel stock. Type style for opening, divider pages, and closing is Times Roman with 36 point headlines and 12 point body copy. Throughout the rest of the book, body copy is 10 point, cap- tions eight point, folio tabs 10 point and photo credits six point. Student Life headlines are Serif Gothic bold, 36 point. Academics headlines are 36 point, Durante. ClubsfOrganiza- tions, Sports, and PeoplefPortraits used Times Roman 36 point headlines.
