For that reason, Coach Penny Craver felt very con- fident that the girl's track program would continue to grow. After the records that the 1986 team broke, it will be hard to surpass their achievements, commented Coach Crav- er. She believed that even though the back- bone of the team lay in the distance run- ners, the sprinters and the field event peo- ple pull their own weight as well. Finishing the 1986 season with a record of 11-3 was a major feat considering that four years ago there was no girl's track team. Last year's team also won the City- fCounty Championship and shared with the boys a special City f County trophy for the school with the most combined points at the end of the two day competition. Returning lettermen played a large role in the success of the 1987 team. Experience certainly helps during those first couple of meets when the new runners are trying to adjust to the way things are run,', stated Assistant Coach Paula Woodruff. This year, 15 returning lettermen, five of which are All Conference, made up the team of 42 girls. As far as strategy goes, Coaches Craver and Woodruff claimed that nothing is ever final until the team arrives at a meet. For example, I can have Ashley Wood- ruff scheduled to run the 400 meter dash, the 800 meter run, the 1600 meter run, and the 4x400 meter relay, realize that I don't really need her to win the meet and scratch her from the latter two at the last minute. She's like Bobbette Love and Robin Truiett in that I can always count on them to run whatever I need them for, as long as it benefits the team. They never let me or the team down in our time of need. That's why they're all team leaders, explained Coach Craver. On the whole, the 1987 turned out to be a memorable year for all involved. Some broke personal records while others were well on their way to breaking personal, school, and even conference records.

They showed up in Florida ranked number four in the nation based on Every coach likes his chances for the season when ten of fifteen squad members are returning, experienced players. On the other hand, most seasoned coaches also prefer not to have major rule changes forced on them. Coach Pat Spainhour faced both situations with the 1986-,87 varsity cheerleading squad. This year's squad was more experi- enced with ten members who have cheered for West previously. Overall they were more skilled than last year. However, due to the new cheerleading rules from the N.C. High School Athletic Association, this year we were not allowed to perform stunts over two fpeoplej high or exten- tions, which last year's squad demonstrat- edf, was how Mrs. Spainhour accessed the situation. Once again the West squad made hard work and experience pay off for them. From UCA fUniversal Cheerleading As- sociationj Camp held at the University of Kentucky, the varsity squad returned with trophies for Cheer Champions and Sideline Chant Champions? For the sec- ond year in a row, they placed first at the Atlantic Coast Regional Championship. This success, along with a barbeque sup- per, candy sales, and a yard sale at the Clemmons Civic Center took them to the National High School Cheerleading Championship at Sea World in Orlando, Florida. It was here that the more experi- enced, more skilled squad met with disap- last's year,s competition. They ended up ranked ninth in the nation out of twenty five squads, who competed. They gave a fantastic performance, placing ninth, but were hampered by the limits of N.C. rules on safety, was how Pat Spainhour explained the less-than-ex- pected results. After four-days-a-week practices, a minimum of ten hours of professional gymnastics training, cheering for the en- tire football and basketball seasons, the varsity squad lost in its effort to bring home a national championship trophy. The whole school felt the same disappoint- ment that the cheerleaders experienced. Undaunted, the varsity team also com- peted in the first North Carolina State Cheerleading Championship held in Fay- etteville on March 14. With all the squads competing under the same safety rules, the fifteen member coed home team secured a first place rank for themselves in the state, scoring 285 out of a possible 300. Most people see cheerleaders as those who stand on the sidelines watching and encouraging the athletes who compete. The West Forsyth cheerleaders take that role one step further. They not only watch and encourage other athletes, but they also know first-hand the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat .
