For that reason, Coach Penny Craver felt very con- fident that the girl's track program would continue to grow. After the records that the 1986 team broke, it will be hard to surpass their achievements, commented Coach Crav- er. She believed that even though the back- bone of the team lay in the distance run- ners, the sprinters and the field event peo- ple pull their own weight as well. Finishing the 1986 season with a record of 11-3 was a major feat considering that four years ago there was no girl's track team. Last year's team also won the City- fCounty Championship and shared with the boys a special City f County trophy for the school with the most combined points at the end of the two day competition. Returning lettermen played a large role in the success of the 1987 team. Experience certainly helps during those first couple of meets when the new runners are trying to adjust to the way things are run,', stated Assistant Coach Paula Woodruff. This year, 15 returning lettermen, five of which are All Conference, made up the team of 42 girls. As far as strategy goes, Coaches Craver and Woodruff claimed that nothing is ever final until the team arrives at a meet. For example, I can have Ashley Wood- ruff scheduled to run the 400 meter dash, the 800 meter run, the 1600 meter run, and the 4x400 meter relay, realize that I don't really need her to win the meet and scratch her from the latter two at the last minute. She's like Bobbette Love and Robin Truiett in that I can always count on them to run whatever I need them for, as long as it benefits the team. They never let me or the team down in our time of need. That's why they're all team leaders, explained Coach Craver. On the whole, the 1987 turned out to be a memorable year for all involved. Some broke personal records while others were well on their way to breaking personal, school, and even conference records.

wif Photos by Rob Harris BACK O TOP After Winning A Conference Title In 1986, The Boyls Track Team Faced A New Challenge ty Kelle Owens Since the big six fGerald Martin, Lussell Tanner, Harvey Sutton, Kevin 'oung, Steve Kelly and Robbie Sipprelll f the 1986 Boy's Track Team were gone, ie 1987 team found itself struggling to irvive in the Central Piedmont 4-A Con- zrence. In 1986 West finished second in the Ci- yfCounty meet, won the conference, fin- :hed 12th in the sectionals, 12th in the zgionals, and eighth in the state. Howev- r, the loss of guaranteed points supplied y the big six challenged the 1987 team J fill in the gaps. Returning letterman included seven All- Ionference players from 1986. Though ew, they contributed their experience to he scoresheet. The running of Riley Muse nd Jeff Piercey, the throwing of Mark Iartner, and the high jumping of Kenny lhouse gave the team insurance in even he toughest of meets. It always eases your mind to know that ou can count on people like Mark Iartner and Shawn Marshall to come hrough with the points every week, espe- ially when you're not feeling so well your- elf, commented Bobby Paige. Paige was a nember of the All-Conference 4x200 me- er relay team in 1986, and an alternate in he 4x100 meter relay at the 1986 state neet held at North Carolina State Univer- sity. Paigels counterpart on the football field became his teammate on the track. Her- man McKinnie was also a member of the 4x100 meter relay team that was ranked second in the state during the 1986 season. Another gridiron great, Dennis Warren, found himself faring well in the spring of 1986. His 400 meter dash time of 55 sec- onds earned him the chance to compete in the Mountaineer Invitational, held for the first time at Appalachian State University. Due to the increased number of partici- pants, 72 boys and 47 girls, many members of both the boy's and girl's track teams found themselves without uniforms. There were only 70 uniforms which both the boys and girls teams had to divide. The reason for this is that track is not a money making sport, no admission is charged for meets, therefore no money is allotted to buy new uniforms. However, both Coach Carter and Coach Craver hoped that as the team continues to grow, so would the supply of uniforms. 1987 was considered to be a time of rebuilding for the boyis track program, and a time of challenge for the partici- pants. In the end, each was satisfied with what he had achieved as an individual, but one goal still remained - to put West back on top in Track and Field. BOY'S TRACK AND FIELD TEAM, FIRST ROW: Trec Aldridge, Mark Atwater, Zegaro Al- dridge, Michael Carethers, Herman McKinnie, Cur- tis Clark, Sidney Carpenter, Steve Gearen, Steven Griffin, Jim Pope, Billy Clevinger, Corey Little.
