CONCENTRATING ON THE STROKE: Richard Serge concentrates on the ball as he makes a return. Being a junior, Richard was one of the more experi- enced members on the team. IOR LEADER HIP The Boys Tennis Team Combined Talent With Experience To Have An Outstanding Season By Rodney Lambert The boys tennis team was exceptionally strong for the first time in many years. Coach Hurley felt the team had many sol- id players and a lot of depth. The top seven players on whom the team is counting were Kevin Wendelboe, Jeff Johnsen, Doug Harrington, Darren Cranfill, Greg John- sen, Sean Kirk, and Tom Murray. The team was very large, consisting of thirty- one members. This gave the team very strong depth. Coach Hurley said, Two areas we in- tend to improve should be speed and ag- gressiveness. Todayls team players must be forceful and fast to be effective. This year, we were more determined and fast- er. There were many goals set for the team. David Lipsitz commented, Coach Hur- ley had high expectations for the team at the beginning of the seasonf' One goal was to win every match and have undefeated season. Another goal was to be conference champions. Improve- ments in key areas and experience gained from last year should have provided hope of obtaining these goals. The conference, which includes perennial powers Reynolds and Mt. Tabor, is always very tough. For the first time in many years the Titans were able to provide these schools with stiff competition. The ultimate goal of the tennis programs was to advance into state competitions. The players competed against some very tough opponents. U'lllfAlDIlllNlElDS Depth and experience are the two most impor- tant aspects of the boys tennis team. Jeff Johnsen is one of the senior leaders. Jeff was first interested in tennis at age twelve, and has played ever since, including four years in high school. V 1 like the individual sport rather than the team concept, explained Jeff. 4 g During his three years at West, he hasffied a personal record of 32-14. Jeff made All Confer- ence as a singles and doubles player in his junior year. As a senior, Jeff was the top seeded player on the team. J eff wanted to help his team through a success- ful season. He also hoped to receive a tennis scholarship at Catawba College. STEPPING INTO THE BALL: David Lipsitz re- veals a smile as he steps into a return. THE R SE Girls Are Making Soccer The Growing Sport At West By Ashley Harrell Soccer is the growing sport for girls at West. Each year the sport has become more and more popular. On this year's varsity team, only nineteen positions were open. There was so much competition on the field Ctrying outj. Since only five new play- ers came to varsity, the JV team should be very skilled, commented Janet Brooks, a senior on varsity. Last year with an overall record of 9-5-l and a conference record of 3-2-l, the var- sity team had a very successful season. They placed second to Page in the confer- ence. One of the team's goals at the begin- ning of the '87 season was to make it to the conference tournament. When asked what some other goals were, Coach Gilbert replied, The team would like to make it past the first round of the state playoffs, but most important, to promote sportmanship through hard work and friendly competition. The competition this year was fairly equal. Before the teams were actually test- ed in matches against their perennial op- ponents, ten matches were considered toss- ups and the other ten were considered a sure bet to win. The schedule this year, however, was really rough. Some sched- uled opponents were in the state play-offs last year. Coach Gilbert commented, g'In the end, the competition helped us. As for the JV team, the new players at West were not all new to soccer. Leigh Kiger, Regina Isenhour, Christy Shanks, Leigh Ann Raines, and Kari Eg- gleston contributed immediately. Leigh Kiger arrived with more skills than the other players, so I hope to see a lot fof helpj out of her, commented Coach McAdams prior to the first game. Some goals Coach McAdams had for the team were to learn to work as a team, to enjoy soccer, and to win a game! Both varsity and JV teams looked very talented this year. Both teams were very skillful!', com- mented Tammy White, a sophomore on the JV team. As the record shows, soccer is the rising sport for girls at West.
