TITANS BASEBALL The Varsity And Junior Varsity Baseball Teams Swing Through Another Season By Sherrill McSwain With the '86 Varsity Baseball team 'eaching the second round of the state :lay-offs, Coach William Carr expected iothing less of his 1987 team. Without putting the monkey on our sacks, I believe we have to be considered me of the top teams in the area this year,', :ommented Coach Carr before the season xegan. Led by pitchersg Brad Whitley, who fin- shed last year's season with a 2-2 record, md Jack Kimel, who finished the season vith 9-4 record, the team opened their irst conference game with a 17-2 win over Elenn. Bryan Bishop, Jeff Doty, Ron Sid- nan and Todd Bowen led scoring with one iomerun each. This year's team included seven players vho started regularly last year and eight vho entered their third year on the varsity evel. Losing pitcher Robert Wall, second Jaseman Tim Lovelace, outfielders Todd Brewer and Chris Sweet was hard on the eam, but all four men were replaced by :xperienced players. Along with Whitley and Bishop, Butch Blackwell, Danny Vestal and Chris Taylor had a hand in pitching throughout the sea- son. Tate Rice replaced Lovelace at sec- ond. Ron Sidman, Mark Wylam, Don Raines, Jonathan Hawkins, Greg Robbins, Jon Cornatzer, Todd Bowen, Vestal and Taylor all had their turn in the outfield replacing Sweet and Brewer. When asked about this year's strengths and weaknesses, Coach Carr said, We should Chave beenj productive on offense and ourpitching should Chave beenj above average. My main concern fwasj defense and keeping our heads straight. With six returning players this year's junior varsity baseball team opened its season with an 8-7 win over Carver, an 18- 9 loss to East. Chris Taylor, Nathan Newsome, Mike Blizzard and Joey Crater were key hitters, while Joey Agee, Crater, Taylor, Blizzard, and Bret Noe had their hand in pitching. IHIEAIDIIIINIEIDS A lot of kids from my neighborhood, were three or four years older than me, taught me to play. I was probably three years old at the time, commented Jack Kimel when asked who first sparked his interest in baseball. Jack has been involved with organized baseball since he was eight years old. Playing different positions makes Jack a versital play- er. The pitchers mound is J ack's favorite place to be on the field, but he also plays first base and center field. As a youngster he played Little League then Senior league baseball. Versitality has probably been the key rea.- son .lack had made the school team since the eighth grade. .lack has played on the West Varsity team since his freshman year and was voted most valuable player his sophomore year. Jack hopm to attend college on scholarship at Clemson, Miami, Carolina, and Arizona. He has aiready has a letter form Carolina and Duke. Baseball 203

Stated Coach Mayberry, Our goal was to make it to the state playoffs. Her reasoning was simple, Two years ago when we started to rebuild our team, we started four freshmen and two soph- mores. They are now experienced juniors and seniors. We also had a couple of play- ers that have moved up from the JV pro- gram? However, this was not where it ended. The Lady Titans also picked up three nev players from other schools. They were Stephanie Arnold an eleventh grader fron Davie High Schoolg LeAnne Emory, ai eleventh grader from Bishop McGuines High School and Kim Hafer, also an elev enth grader from Charlotte. Last year's toughest competition cam- from outside Winston-Salem. This yea was no different. Except for Parkland, th- hardest wins to come by were games witl out-of-county schools like North David son, A.L. Brown, South Rowan and Davie Likewise, the J V's also had a difficult timi with these schools. l
