Chris Mackie IHIEAIDIIIINIEIIQS Junior Anthony Ford moved to Winston-Salem last summer and has made a positive impact on the West Forsyth wrestling program. Arriving from Virginia with two conference titles to his credit, Ford, as well as his teammates, had high hopes at the beginning of the season. We had the talent and the potential, said Ford, But it was hard to get over the losses due to injuries and people quitting. Anthony was happy with his fortunes, but he didn't overlook what helped get him to where he is. Stated Ford, Training partners are a very important part of wrestling. A good partner helps you tremendously because it makes you that much better. I was lucky enough to have two of the best in the state in Kak Proctor and Tony Gold. Anthony Ford is obviously a talented wrestler, but that's not all there is to this young man. He's not that one dimensional. Perhaps Anthony Ford is best sum- merized by one of his teammates. Scott Mills had this to say, He is not only an asset on the mats, he is willing to share the glory, be friendly with everyone and help out in any way he can. Chris Mackie Wrestlingf20l

Kak finished second in the state in his weight class. BREAKING AWAY: Doug Sakowski attempts to escape from his opponent. Doug was one of the best wrestlers ever produced by the school. Rob Harris 200 Wrestling PINNED - 'DER Grapplers Saw Potential Early But Suffered Defeat More Often Than Not By Melanie Wilcox and Mark Cartner Although the season was definitely not a dismal one for the wrestling team, for a squad with so much hope and potential, it was a disappointing one. Prior to the season expectations were high, prompting Varsity team member Tony Archie to comment, We have a lot of talent and experience to work with. We should do well. However, the campaign turned out to be a little less gratifying than what most had expected. The Varsity team managed a record of five wins and nine losses while the JVs finished at five and five. Even though the records may not reflect it, there was a tremendous effort put forth by these young men. They had to face unfore- seen adversity in the form of injuries and less dedicated members, who chose not to finish out the season. Stated Head Varsity Coach Ray Bell, In our practices everyone worked hard and worked together. lim proud of the at- titude of the team as a whole. Head JV Coach Rodney Nivens, a graduate of West and former wrestler, felt much the same. f'The guys had to face some tough situations this year, but they held together pretty well and finished with a respectable recordf' In a season overshadowed by dissap- pointment, there were some bright spots for Titan wrestling. Anthony Ford, Doug Sakowski, Tony Archie, Mark Bodford, and Kak Proctor all pinned down success- ful campaigns. Kak, only a junior, finished second in the state in his weight class 11191. Even though they didn't quite reach the preseason goals they set for themselves, this year 's wrestlers did help to close the gap between West's program and those of other schools. What they lacked in the team accomplishments, they offset with individual triumphs. This should provide a little boost in the area of notoriety and respect. Keeping in mind the fortunes of past West Forsyth grapplers, these two commodities should prove to be very valu- able in the future.
