Among these was key swim- mer Mark Lane. Mark initially became interested in swimming eleven years ago. He has swum for the Winston- Saiem YMCA, AAU team, Winston-Salem As- sociated Swim Clubs, and West Forsyth. Mark enjoys swimming because It gives me a way to represent West by doing something I en- Joy. 95 He has received the Jonestown Swim Club Most Outstanding Swimmer twice and has bro- ken the West Forsyth 50 meter freestyle record four times. Mark has been coached by several very talent- ed coaches. One who stands out in his mind is Mr. Dennis Watson. Dennis is a former All-Ameri- can swimmer who still contributes a lot to me and the school team by serving as an official at meets and by advising members of the team. Mark was asked what the futureholds for him in the area of swimming. He replied, Right now, I'm looking forward to using everything I've learned these last two years to really make a difference my senior year. , THINKING IT OVER: Senior Ginny Sugg talks with Coach Steve McAdams about her up-coming event. Ginny was one of the few girls who would tackle the challenge of the 500 freestyle distance event. Ginny has swum competitively for eleven years. Swim And D1vefl99

TITAN'S SWIMMIN The Boys' And Girls' Swim Teams Kicked Into A Successful Season By Sherrill McSwain Consistency is the condition of adhering together. Consistency was the quality Coa- ch Bill Carter felt his 1986-87 girls swim team best possessed. The girls this year, like last, were coop- erative and were willing to do what was needed to be done to be successfulf, com- mented Coach Carter. Led by team captain, Ginny Bradford, Sally Kuhl, and Kathy Turner, this year's team achieved a 4-1 record, and their first CityfCounty Championship title. The CityfCounty championships were held Saturday, February 7, at Wake For- est University. During this meet four school records were broken and two city- fcounty records were set. Claudia Goins broke her own record in the 100 breast stroke, Kelly Davis also broke her own school record in the 100 back stroke. The medley relay team, of Kelly Davis, Merrily Taylor, Claudia Goins, and Ginny Bradford set a new school record and broke the 1986 cityfcounty record set by Mt. Tabor. We worked really hard to improve our medley time. We knew if we could break s 198 f Swim And Dive DIVERS: First Row: Coach Steve McAdams, Mike Lutes, Jeff Beitel, Chris Alvarnas, Mrs. Paula Wood- ruff. Second Row: Jodi'Creager, Kathy Turner, Brit- tany Orrell. ' the old school record, we could set a new cityfcounty record, commented Ginny Bradford. Although the boys kept a good 4-1 re- cord, they weren't as successful as the girlfs team. With leading swimmers Mark Lane, Kent Rothrock, Kevin Wendleboe, and Jeff Sheesley, the 1986-87 boys' team placed second in the cityfcounty meet Mark Lane also broke his own 50 freestyle record during this meet. I have always had the West Forsyth 50 freestyle record, so I am always pushing myself to make the record better, com- mented Mark when asked about his free- style records. 1 Both boys' and girls' diving teams had an impressive showing during the city- fcounty meet. Jeff Beitel placed first, re- taining his undefeated ranking for two years straight. Although the boys' showings weren't as impressive as the girls', both teams as a whole broke four school or cityfcounty 1 records, and ended the season in record breaking fashion, giving West a team to be proud of. Kak finished second in the state in his weight class. BREAKING AWAY: Doug Sakowski attempts to escape from his opponent. Doug was one of the best wrestlers ever produced by the school. Rob Harris 200 Wrestling PINNED - 'DER Grapplers Saw Potential Early But Suffered Defeat More Often Than Not By Melanie Wilcox and Mark Cartner Although the season was definitely not a dismal one for the wrestling team, for a squad with so much hope and potential, it was a disappointing one. Prior to the season expectations were high, prompting Varsity team member Tony Archie to comment, We have a lot of talent and experience to work with. We should do well. However, the campaign turned out to be a little less gratifying than what most had expected. The Varsity team managed a record of five wins and nine losses while the JVs finished at five and five. Even though the records may not reflect it, there was a tremendous effort put forth by these young men. They had to face unfore- seen adversity in the form of injuries and less dedicated members, who chose not to finish out the season. Stated Head Varsity Coach Ray Bell, In our practices everyone worked hard and worked together. lim proud of the at- titude of the team as a whole. Head JV Coach Rodney Nivens, a graduate of West and former wrestler, felt much the same. f'The guys had to face some tough situations this year, but they held together pretty well and finished with a respectable recordf' In a season overshadowed by dissap- pointment, there were some bright spots for Titan wrestling. Anthony Ford, Doug Sakowski, Tony Archie, Mark Bodford, and Kak Proctor all pinned down success- ful campaigns. Kak, only a junior, finished second in the state in his weight class 11191. Even though they didn't quite reach the preseason goals they set for themselves, this year 's wrestlers did help to close the gap between West's program and those of other schools. What they lacked in the team accomplishments, they offset with individual triumphs. This should provide a little boost in the area of notoriety and respect. Keeping in mind the fortunes of past West Forsyth grapplers, these two commodities should prove to be very valu- able in the future.
