Tabor. Shannon was one of the big coring threats on the inside. She averaged 5.6 points At the beginning of the season Shawna Penn didrft know if she was going to make the team. Now she leads the team in scoring and steals. A Sophomore, Shawna didn't play basketball last year, but has more than made up for it this year. Early in the season Shawna said, I could have easily missed an easy layup but I have developed a lot since then. I now know a lot of the fundamen- tals of the game. L Sitavma had her best game against Mt. Tabor when she scored 16 points. I just want to go out and do my best every game and hopefully we will win, said Shawna. Shawna plans to practice over the summer so she will be even more improved for next year. . . w - yer game, .JV B21SK6Ib21llfl97

REB ILDI The JV Cagers Combined Inexperience With Two New Coaches To Have A Rebuilding Season By Rodney Lambert Under the leadership of two first year coaches the girls and boys JV basketball teams played with desire, although they did not attain their goal of having a win- ning season. Even though the records may not indi- cate a successful season, both Coach Huddleson and Coach Leach felt that all the players gained needed experience. For the boys Cullen Howell was a con- sistent scorer while Darrel Moody was the key rebounder. Some other important players who improved steadily were James W. Terry, Keith Bailey and Kenny Shouse. Mr. Huddleston commented, We lost three of our best players to the varsity team early in the season. This made it particularly difficult to match up against more talented teams. The girls worked together very well as a team and had good depth. Wendy Blount and Shawna Penn were the key players on defense as well as consistent scorers. Mel- ita Wise and Kelli Ketner were important perimeter shooters. The strength of the team, however, was the inside game sparked by Shannon Cornatzer, Crystal Wendt and Jerry Woods, who led the team in rebounding. Shawna Penn commented, I like Coa- ch Leach because he is a good teacher and he never gives up. Despite being short on talent the boys won at Carver and defeated South Rowan 61-58 at home. A big win for the girls was a 37-34 victory over the Kannapolis Wonders. Both Mr. Huddleston and Mr. Leach saw all the players improve with every game. The players were willing to try dif- ferent things in order to fit into the new program. Although neither team had a winning season, both teams learned the fundamentals and had a good time, which are two important aspects of high school basketball according to Coach Leach and Coach Huddleston. --- r------ -1 ---- BOYS JV BASKETBALL TEAM: Front Row: Mark Passarello, Monte Reid, Chris Allen, Tree Aldridge, Cullen Howell, Back Row: Coach Huddleston, Will Hunt, Greg Glass, Darrell Moody, Kenny Shouse, Keith Bailey, Michael Whitehead, Mike Parker, James W. TITAN'S SWIMMIN The Boys' And Girls' Swim Teams Kicked Into A Successful Season By Sherrill McSwain Consistency is the condition of adhering together. Consistency was the quality Coa- ch Bill Carter felt his 1986-87 girls swim team best possessed. The girls this year, like last, were coop- erative and were willing to do what was needed to be done to be successfulf, com- mented Coach Carter. Led by team captain, Ginny Bradford, Sally Kuhl, and Kathy Turner, this year's team achieved a 4-1 record, and their first CityfCounty Championship title. The CityfCounty championships were held Saturday, February 7, at Wake For- est University. During this meet four school records were broken and two city- fcounty records were set. Claudia Goins broke her own record in the 100 breast stroke, Kelly Davis also broke her own school record in the 100 back stroke. The medley relay team, of Kelly Davis, Merrily Taylor, Claudia Goins, and Ginny Bradford set a new school record and broke the 1986 cityfcounty record set by Mt. Tabor. We worked really hard to improve our medley time. We knew if we could break s 198 f Swim And Dive DIVERS: First Row: Coach Steve McAdams, Mike Lutes, Jeff Beitel, Chris Alvarnas, Mrs. Paula Wood- ruff. Second Row: Jodi'Creager, Kathy Turner, Brit- tany Orrell. ' the old school record, we could set a new cityfcounty record, commented Ginny Bradford. Although the boys kept a good 4-1 re- cord, they weren't as successful as the girlfs team. With leading swimmers Mark Lane, Kent Rothrock, Kevin Wendleboe, and Jeff Sheesley, the 1986-87 boys' team placed second in the cityfcounty meet Mark Lane also broke his own 50 freestyle record during this meet. I have always had the West Forsyth 50 freestyle record, so I am always pushing myself to make the record better, com- mented Mark when asked about his free- style records. 1 Both boys' and girls' diving teams had an impressive showing during the city- fcounty meet. Jeff Beitel placed first, re- taining his undefeated ranking for two years straight. Although the boys' showings weren't as impressive as the girls', both teams as a whole broke four school or cityfcounty 1 records, and ended the season in record breaking fashion, giving West a team to be proud of.
