LUNGING T0 MAKE THE RETURN: Meredith Phillips strides toward the ball as she prepares to make a return against a Davie opponent. She won the match and had an overall record of 17-3. Meredith was the only girls' single's player to advance to the state finals in school history. T. - .... Nev...- GILBERTS BE ST The Girls Tennis Team Combined Experience With Young Talent To Have An Outstanding Season By Rodney Lambert The team's 13-2 record exceeded their last year's 10-4 record under coach Gil- berts' strong leadership. The only two losses were at the hands of a strong Reyn- olds team. In the second meeting at West Forsyth all the matches went three sets, even though West won only three of the nine matches. Coach Gilberts' priority was team goals versus individual goals, although every player had her best individual re- cord. Promising newcomer, Cathy Or- berle, compiled the best regular season re- cord of 14-1 with the only loss coming to Kelly Moser of Reynolds whom she de- feated in the first meeting at West For- syth. Cathy stated, At the beginning of the season I set my goals to play singles as a freshman and to have a winning record. I was very happy to have attained both of these goals. Another team leader, senior Meredith Phillips, defeated fourteenth ranked ,... Chandy Challa of Mt. Tabor in both meet- ings. In the first meeting at Mt. Tabor, Meredith was down 5-0, but came back to win 7-6. Meredith commented, That was a good win for me and it gave me a lot of confidence? One of the highlights of the season for Meredith was beating Ashley McGehee of Reynolds. Meredith lost to her twice during the regular season, but defeated her in the third meeting to ad- vance into the state tournament. Meredith ended her season as one of the top girls in the state. Eventually she lost in the first round of the state finals. Holly Miller finished the season as a quarter-finalist in the regional tourna- ment. Doubles team of Shelly and Cathy Oberle advanced to the second round. The team ended the season at second place in the conference and fourth place in the Regional tournament. The entire team surpassed coach Gilberts' goals to have an outstanding season. is SQ N . in ?.N,,,E: fy., F5315 ,gs 1986 GIRL'S TENNIS TEAM, FRONT ROW: Holly Miller, Cathy Oberle, Laura Long, Melissa Parks, Suzanne Smith. IN CLOSE: Todd Jones gets inside for an easy deuce in a loss to Wilkes Central in the Frank Spencer. The holiday tournament wasn't as kind to the Titans this year ushering the team out after two games. ll'llEAlDllllNll1lIQS There are only a fewseconds left. The score is tied and the ball is dangerously close to going out of bounds. What do you do? If you're 6'l , 155 pounds and your name is Vince Hairston you lunge for the . ball. Grab it. Throw it over your back and through the hoop for the winning points. It may sound iike fantasy, but it was really true. Vince Hairston, or Mr, Clutehman' by his own estimation, actually performed this miracle in a home tilt against the War Eagles of Davie High School on February ll. And on February I9 he hit a twelve foot baseline jumpshot with only three seconds ieft to beat Reynolds. To the suprise of his coach, Vince turned up his level of play tremendously this year. Stated Vince, 1 just assumed the role of team leader, I mean we lost so many leaders last year. Some one had to do it. Although he may sound a little overconlident at times, his stats back him up. Vince led the team in scoring, grabbed fifty-three rebounds from his guard spot, dished out fifty assists, blocked eleven shots, and led the team in steals with fifty-six. Playing in college would be a dream come true for a lot of people. The same is true for Vince. However, if this chance doesnit come it won't be the end of the world for him. Vince may be confident in his abilities, but heis not unrealistic. Perhaps it's this combination that enabled Vince Hairston to achieve the level oi' success that he did. W . Rob Harris JUST OUT OF REACH: A Wilkes Central player tries to force his way in on Deric Byers and Chris Legette. Todd Jones watched his teammates snare the rebound in a 61-87 loss in the Frank Spencer Holiday Classic. 192 f Boys, Varsity Basketball
