Titan Cross Country Team Fulfilled Their Potential To Come Out On Top Of Another Winning Season Melanie Wilcox -ast year's exceptional Cross Country ms placed a new emphasis on the sport. ls year's team not only met previous ndards but also exceeded expectations. w talent from freshmen and sopho- res coupled with experienced returning ners gave the team a justifiably opti- ,tic outlook for the season. klthough they were individually talent- talent was not what set the Titans .rt. Their distinguishing characteristic s dedication, both to their team and to ir own personal goals. Senior Jeff Pier- said, Determination is what made us form as well as we didf' x healthy competition among team Tnbers, as well as with other schools ve the team through the rigors of prac- : most daily. Sophomore David Etchi- seemed to sum up the sentiments of entire team when he said. Three igs that you can always depend on are th, taxes and Cross Country practicef, 'inishing the season with twenty wins four losses, the men's Cross Country n became the first to win twenty of lr meets. An accomplishment that may n even more amazing was their win inst the Reynolds' Demons early in the son. Leading the pack this year for the 1 were seniors Jeff Piercey, Tim Yar- ugh, and Pat Canuppg juniors Riley se and Jim Lee, and sophomore David Etchison. Piercey, Muse and Etchison each made all-conference by finishing in the top ten at the Regional meet. The women's record was impressive - twenty wins and one loss - in only their second season. Led by all-conference run- ners Ashley Woodruff, Ginny Sugg, Kim Knowles and Shannon McGinnis the girls finished first in the regional meet, boosting their school's already winning reputation. Sophomore Kim Knowles said, Having my own goals to work toward made me work a lot harder in the meets. One of the team's major goals this sea- son was to make it to the state meet. For the guys, this was the first time in years this goal had been realized, and junior Ril- ey Muse said, Going to the state this year was more than enough reward for all the hard workf, Top finishers for the men were Jeff Piercey, Riley Muse and David Etchison. The girls finished twelfth with Ashley Woodruff, Kim Knowles and Gin- ny Sugg finishing at the top. Remarkable finishes by both teams made for another memorable season. With all of the hard work and emotion contrib- uted by each team member, the Titan har- riers more than deserved the recognition they received. This year's cross country team displayed not only spirit and deter- mination in practice but also a style and grace in winning. lHllff.xXlDIllINllflDS With all-star runners and a record breaking sea- son, it was easy for a lot of inexperienced runners to get lost in the shuffle. One freshman who didn't get over-looked was Robin Truiett. She finished eleventh in the Regional meet, missing all-conference by one place. Robin was the only freshman to be named to the All-City County team with team members Ashley Woodruff, Ginny Sugg, Kim Knowles, Sherri Hum- phreys. Linda Wood and Jill Hunt. Going to the State meet realized one of Robinis goals as well as the team's, and she was the only freshman to go to the States. Robin plans to ran for the next three years and hopes to continue improving but has no plans beyond high school, yet. Cross Countryfl89

LUNGING T0 MAKE THE RETURN: Meredith Phillips strides toward the ball as she prepares to make a return against a Davie opponent. She won the match and had an overall record of 17-3. Meredith was the only girls' single's player to advance to the state finals in school history. T. - .... Nev...- GILBERTS BE ST The Girls Tennis Team Combined Experience With Young Talent To Have An Outstanding Season By Rodney Lambert The team's 13-2 record exceeded their last year's 10-4 record under coach Gil- berts' strong leadership. The only two losses were at the hands of a strong Reyn- olds team. In the second meeting at West Forsyth all the matches went three sets, even though West won only three of the nine matches. Coach Gilberts' priority was team goals versus individual goals, although every player had her best individual re- cord. Promising newcomer, Cathy Or- berle, compiled the best regular season re- cord of 14-1 with the only loss coming to Kelly Moser of Reynolds whom she de- feated in the first meeting at West For- syth. Cathy stated, At the beginning of the season I set my goals to play singles as a freshman and to have a winning record. I was very happy to have attained both of these goals. Another team leader, senior Meredith Phillips, defeated fourteenth ranked ,... Chandy Challa of Mt. Tabor in both meet- ings. In the first meeting at Mt. Tabor, Meredith was down 5-0, but came back to win 7-6. Meredith commented, That was a good win for me and it gave me a lot of confidence? One of the highlights of the season for Meredith was beating Ashley McGehee of Reynolds. Meredith lost to her twice during the regular season, but defeated her in the third meeting to ad- vance into the state tournament. Meredith ended her season as one of the top girls in the state. Eventually she lost in the first round of the state finals. Holly Miller finished the season as a quarter-finalist in the regional tourna- ment. Doubles team of Shelly and Cathy Oberle advanced to the second round. The team ended the season at second place in the conference and fourth place in the Regional tournament.
