TITANS SOCCER The Varsity And Junior Varsity Soccer Teams Kicked To A Climax By Sherrill McSwain Led by senior team captains Donnie Esposito, Bill Lutes, and Kevin Wendel- boe, the varsity soccer team continued their winning tradition with a conference record of five and three and their first state playoff berth in four years. Coach Carter commented, The 1986 soccer team achieved several goals: second place in the conference, a first ever win over Mt. Tabor, and an invitation to the state tournament. In the first round of state tournament play, the Titans lost a hard fought battle to a powerful East Forsyth team with a final score of 2-l. Commenting on the final game Chris Lowder said, Despite all our problems we pulled together as a team to play the best game of the entire season. Just as the varsity team was closing out their winning season with a 2-l defeat, the junior varsity was doing just the opposite by closing their season with a 2-1 victory over Parkland. 186 f Boys Soccer This year's junior varsity soccer team along with team captains Michael Espo- sito, Scott Jones, and Michael Lutes, achieved a 6-5-3 overall record. 'fWe jelled into a cohesive unit earlier this year due to the addition of several very talented freshmen who were quickly absorbed into our program. Consequently we were able to win some close ones, said Coach McAdams. Combined, this years soccer teams put together one of the best records in recent memory. A strong force behind this year's success can be attributed to the four brothers who served as team captains. Donnie Esposito and Bill Lutes headed the varsity, while their younger siblings, Mike and Mike led the J.V.'s. Talent and leader- ship, are two qualities that are unusual in an athlete, yet were plentiful in this year's soccer program. Even though Esposito and Lutes will graduate, their places will be filled by the brothers, ensuring the team a bright future. GOIN' FOR THE CATCH: Junior goalie Chris Lowder successfully blocks a Parkland goal. The Ti- tans went on to win the October 14 game 4-. Shan- non has played volleyball for four years. Her first year was at Southwest Junior High. She has been playing at West for three years and on varsity the last two. Shannon's reason for starting volleyball was be- cause it looked fun. Yet little did she know that she would be given the Hustler Award in her junior year, voted all-Conference and first runner-up for player of the year her senior year. Spending most of her volleyball years at West, Shannon commented, I like playing for West be- cause we are all winners. Everyone is so supportive. I also feel that our team's best attribute is the ability to work together. Not many teams can say that. One ofthe highlights of Shannorfs high school years was participating in volleyball. With her help West advanced to the state tournament for the first time in the history of the school. Andrew Tilley, Conch Beatty, IHIEAIDIIIINIEIDS Andy Mueller first became interested in soccer ten years ago when he was denied the opportunity to play little league football, because they did not have a coach. For the past three years Andy has played stopper for the varsity soccer team. As a junior he was voted Most Improved and as a junior he received the Sportsmanship award. Andy never missed a prac- tice! Always did his best in practice and in the game, never complained, just wanted a chance to play. When asked about his playing ability, Andy com- mented, I tend to be a situation player. My style of play is much more physical than that of other players. As a result, I tend to play more against teams which force the ball down the middle, and I tend to play less against faster more skilled teams. Although Andy would like to play in college he feels that the possibilities are slim, because he hasn't developed the necessary skills. It is assured that this young man will continue to strive as a person. Whatever Andy Mueller lacks in physical talent he more than makes up with character. Ifrnnk Samu KICKING INTO ACTION: Kak Proctor dribbles toward the West Forsyth goal for a score against Carver on September ll. West won the match 4-I. Kak was one of the key players, scoring goals for the entire season.
