Winning Spirit Helps The Volleyball Teams Throughout The Season 1 By Ashley Harrell It was time for a change. The record shows that it had been a while since the Varsity Volleyball Team had had a win- ning season. With seven returning players and five experienced newcomers, the la- dies were ready to change the record by having a victorious season. The main goal of the team was to win the conference and to play in the state tournament. The team finished second in the conference and received a bid to the state tournament for the first time in the history of the school. The volleyball team was like a family working together. That is very important to a winning seasonf' replied Kim Cole. Coach Mayberry added, We have re- ceived compliments from many coaches on how well we play as a team and how well the girls got along on the court under pressure. In the third and final match of the Davie game, for example, West was behind 8 to 13. The ladies pulled through to win 15 to 13. We have had a great season, com- mented Coach Mayberry. This team is made up of twelve very fine young ladies, who have hung together in both good and bad times. This team did not have a strong volleyball tradition therefore, they have had to pave their own way. From a coachls point of view, this has been a delightful group of young ladies to work with. Every- l84f Varsity And JV Volleyball one is very positive and supportive of each other? This winning attitude was always evi- dent! The Varsity Volleyball Team had their best conference record in over ten years. This was also the first year the team played in the state tournament. Although the team lost to North Forsyth in the tour- nament, West played their hardest until the final point. The game was very close throughout, commented Wendy Blount. North just ended up getting the breaks. Being on Junior Varsity Volleyball may not seem as glamorous as varsity, but it is just as important to have a winning season. Introducing the new players to volleyball was an objective Coach Hemric had for the team. She wanted to teach them the basic rules, regulations, and skills for play- ing the game. Coach Hemric wanted to make the sport enjoyable and fun for the whole team, but most important, to have a winning season. With eleven newcomers and three returning players, the team fought their way to an even winf loss sea- son. Coach Henric commented, The highlight of this year was winning the last game against Mount Tabor!,' The Junior Varsity Volleyball Team was not as successful as varsity, but the mem- J. bers have learned great skills to carry I them on to play varsity in the coming I tt'tttt'cf W.. iw... years. Her effort helped West pull a 2-0 victory over Parkland. lI'lllfaXlDIlllNlElIQS ' Cool beanslu was Shannon Lilly's was of saying Way to go! on the Varsity Volleyball Team. Shan- non has played volleyball for four years. Her first year was at Southwest Junior High. She has been playing at West for three years and on varsity the last two. Shannon's reason for starting volleyball was be- cause it looked fun. Yet little did she know that she would be given the Hustler Award in her junior year, voted all-Conference and first runner-up for player of the year her senior year. Spending most of her volleyball years at West, Shannon commented, I like playing for West be- cause we are all winners. Everyone is so supportive. I also feel that our team's best attribute is the ability to work together. Not many teams can say that. One ofthe highlights of Shannorfs high school years was participating in volleyball. With her help West advanced to the state tournament for the first time in the history of the school.
