UNLIMITED POTENTIAL: Quarterback Todd Haglan eludes a Glenn Bobcat in a 22-8 win. Todd also played defensive back and was honored because of his versatility by being moved up to the varsity. HEAD UP: The defense settles in for an onrush of Bobcats in an early season win over Glenn. The unit recorded two shutouts on the season against South Rowan and Reynolds. 21322 sf-Ttfifgrr 3285 5 5 ii: wg 30 33? iss? ,.,,,,-tt.. mt 55? 555 --5242543222 ts..,,f., .. Rob Harr' F RUSTRATIG is The J.V. Gridiron Proved Disappointing As The Team Struggled Through The Season By Mark Cartner For most people frustrate means to bring to nothing, make useless or worth- less, or to defeat. However, to head J.V. football coach Tom Henson, his staff and his players, it was simply defined as a 4-4-2 final season record. Oddly enough, the ex- act same mark set by last yearls squad. It sort of leaves a bittersweet taste in your mouth, commented Sean Kelly, I mean you look at the final record and you canlt say we had a losing season but then you also can't say we had a winning season either. I really thought we would do better. I thought we deserved better, but that's the way it goes. Trying to figure out what went wrong or what did not go right is not easily done. However, if a reason need be given it would be inconsistency. The scoreboard is indicative of this. Twice the team won by two touchdowns or more. Four times they scored more than twenty points. And twice the defense recorded a shutout. Then there are the two wins that came by a touch- down or less. Andjust as the team won two contests by two touchdowns, they likewise lost two by the same margin. Finally there is the matter of the two stalemates. For less informed people, a tie in football is moderately rare. Most teams can count on averaging less than one a year. These J.Vfs have averaged two. Someone once l82fJV Football described a tie as being like kissing your sister. If that is so, not only did this year's team kiss its sister, but they hugged her too. Quarterback Todd Haglan responded, I really don't know quite what our prob- lem was this year. I thought after last year we would have gotten things together. We worked hard in practice, but it just seemed like we didn't get enough breaks. Even though we had a tough season I still feel good about our team and what we accomplished. Following the season's finale against Mt. Tabor, Coach Henson felt the pains of a what might have been campaign. Words like frustrating,' and disappoint- ingl' seemed to be his way of describing the season. But just before the last game he had this to say, I did not set goals as such. Although our basic objective is to teach our younger people our offensive and defensive system, I was hoping for a winning season. However, if this is not pos- sible I would like to feel that our kids have played well all year. The winning season lost and a losing one avoided, this yearis J.V. football team can be proud. They did all that was asked of them to the best of their ability and re- gardless of the final record, this dedication makes them winners.

SETTING FOR THE KILL: Kim Cole sets the ball up for a spike With the help of Kim s talents West DE I I added another win against Parkland to the record. Winning Spirit Helps The Volleyball Teams Throughout The Season 1 By Ashley Harrell It was time for a change. The record shows that it had been a while since the Varsity Volleyball Team had had a win- ning season. With seven returning players and five experienced newcomers, the la- dies were ready to change the record by having a victorious season. The main goal of the team was to win the conference and to play in the state tournament. The team finished second in the conference and received a bid to the state tournament for the first time in the history of the school. The volleyball team was like a family working together. That is very important to a winning seasonf' replied Kim Cole. Coach Mayberry added, We have re- ceived compliments from many coaches on how well we play as a team and how well the girls got along on the court under pressure. In the third and final match of the Davie game, for example, West was behind 8 to 13. The ladies pulled through to win 15 to 13. We have had a great season, com- mented Coach Mayberry. This team is made up of twelve very fine young ladies, who have hung together in both good and bad times. This team did not have a strong volleyball tradition therefore, they have had to pave their own way. From a coachls point of view, this has been a delightful group of young ladies to work with. Every- l84f Varsity And JV Volleyball one is very positive and supportive of each other? This winning attitude was always evi- dent! The Varsity Volleyball Team had their best conference record in over ten years. This was also the first year the team played in the state tournament. Although the team lost to North Forsyth in the tour- nament, West played their hardest until the final point. The game was very close throughout, commented Wendy Blount. North just ended up getting the breaks. Being on Junior Varsity Volleyball may not seem as glamorous as varsity, but it is just as important to have a winning season. Introducing the new players to volleyball was an objective Coach Hemric had for the team. She wanted to teach them the basic rules, regulations, and skills for play- ing the game. Coach Hemric wanted to make the sport enjoyable and fun for the whole team, but most important, to have a winning season. With eleven newcomers and three returning players, the team fought their way to an even winf loss sea- son. Coach Henric commented, The highlight of this year was winning the last game against Mount Tabor!,' The Junior Varsity Volleyball Team was not as successful as varsity, but the mem- J. bers have learned great skills to carry I them on to play varsity in the coming I tt'tttt'cf W.. iw... years.
