Gridiron Proved Disappointing As The Team Struggled Through The Season By Mark Cartner For most people frustrate means to bring to nothing, make useless or worth- less, or to defeat. However, to head J.V. football coach Tom Henson, his staff and his players, it was simply defined as a 4-4-2 final season record. Oddly enough, the ex- act same mark set by last yearls squad. It sort of leaves a bittersweet taste in your mouth, commented Sean Kelly, I mean you look at the final record and you canlt say we had a losing season but then you also can't say we had a winning season either. I really thought we would do better. I thought we deserved better, but that's the way it goes. Trying to figure out what went wrong or what did not go right is not easily done. However, if a reason need be given it would be inconsistency. The scoreboard is indicative of this. Twice the team won by two touchdowns or more. Four times they scored more than twenty points. And twice the defense recorded a shutout. Then there are the two wins that came by a touch- down or less. Andjust as the team won two contests by two touchdowns, they likewise lost two by the same margin. Finally there is the matter of the two stalemates. For less informed people, a tie in football is moderately rare. Most teams can count on averaging less than one a year. These J.Vfs have averaged two. Someone once l82fJV Football described a tie as being like kissing your sister. If that is so, not only did this year's team kiss its sister, but they hugged her too. Quarterback Todd Haglan responded, I really don't know quite what our prob- lem was this year. I thought after last year we would have gotten things together. We worked hard in practice, but it just seemed like we didn't get enough breaks. Even though we had a tough season I still feel good about our team and what we accomplished. Following the season's finale against Mt. Tabor, Coach Henson felt the pains of a what might have been campaign. Words like frustrating,' and disappoint- ingl' seemed to be his way of describing the season. But just before the last game he had this to say, I did not set goals as such. Although our basic objective is to teach our younger people our offensive and defensive system, I was hoping for a winning season. However, if this is not pos- sible I would like to feel that our kids have played well all year. The winning season lost and a losing one avoided, this yearis J.V. football team can be proud. They did all that was asked of them to the best of their ability and re- gardless of the final record, this dedication makes them winners.

The seniors went first as it was their final regu- lar season game at West Forsyth. The game was a good one with the Titans prevailing over the War Eagles of Davie by 7.
