A . ,g CROWDED STREETS - WHAT A SCENE! Thousands of people each year are attracted to the sight, sounds, and smells of the Carolina Street Scene. The Arts Council of Winston-Salem has spon- sored the Street Scene for ll years. OLD TIME ROCK-ROLL: Bo Didley, a 60's rock-n- roller, is one of the main attractions at the Street Scene. Along with Bo Didley, many other entertain- ers, such as Dave Brubeck, Mike Cross, and Chubby Checker performed and attracted large crowds, l4f Street Scene and Dixie Classic Fair nfl A FAIR CLD SCENE By Teresa Shutt lthough the Carolina Street Scene and Dixie Classic Fair are fairly old traditions, they both bring a new kind of excitement to Winston-Salem every year. The Street Scene, which started in 1976, sponsored by the Arts Council, is held an- nually during the first week of September. Thousands of people flocked to the streets of downtown Winston-Salem for last year's Street Scene. They tasted delicious food, looked at and bought crafts. The Street Scene also presented live perfomers such as Bo Didley, Dave Bru- beck, Mike Cross, and Chubby Checker. West student Michelle Shelton comment- ed, 'LI really enjoyed the music, but my favorite part was tasting the wonderful food! And when asked if she would go back next year, Misty Gibbs replied with a smile, I wouldn't miss it! As one of the oldest traditions in the Piedmont, the Dixie Classic Fair, which began in 1886, was one of the most popu- lar events of the year for the teenagers in Winston-Salem. More than 280,000 peo- ple attended the fair which was held Octo- ber 3-ll, remarked Bill Austin in the Dixie Classic Fair information office. The fair had many exhibits and special attractions such as: a tractor pull, pig races, a petting zoo, fire works, live con- certs, and 65 rides provided by James E. Strates Shows. Of the fair's many exhibits, three were from West. The Future Farmers of Ameri- ca had two booths. One in which the theme was based on tobacco. The second booth dealt with Safe Huntingn habits. Proving that colors worn while hunting could make the difference between life and death, this booth received third place and 590.00 Make a Life for Yourself Before you Make a Life for Another! was the title of the Future Homemakers of America's booth which was based on teenage preg- nancy. This booth placed eighth. Although the fun and excitement of the Street Scene and the fair are but a memo- ry, students still remember the good times. Cammie Moore, recalling her last night at the fair expressed, It was great! The crowds, the food, the rides, it was really great!! I can't wait until next year!
