ANTICIPATION: The boys' cross country team awaits the gun that will send them on their way. The team exemplified the overall athletic program at West as they made it all the way to the state meet in Charlotte. Titans n Top By Mark Cartner hile West Forsyth has long been known for its academic excellence, the school's athletic program, in recent years, has enjoyed equal growth and a rise to prominence. With 18 varsity and nine j.v. teams fielded for 1986-87, West was able to boast one of, if not the most, powerful athletic departments in the area. Under Athletic Director Durwood Pack, the Titans have compiled over-all winning percentages that would have been considered unheard of just three or four years ago. Last year West finished second in the Wachovia Cup standings by a mere four points to Reynolds High School. The award is given annually to the conference school with the best overall sports record. After completion of this yearis fall sports schedule, West was in first place by four points. Easily the most noteworthy change in fortunes has been that of the varsity football team. Long recognized for their lack of production on the gridiron, the 1985-86 squad turned the tables finishing at 6-4. In 1986-87 the team cruised through the season undefeated and into the playoffs for the first time in the school's history. However, football was not the only sport that came of age. This year saw a resurgence in volleyball and wrestling, while other sports like soccer, tennis, and track and field continued to be strong. In fact, there were very few, if any, sports in which West was not a strong competitor. Not bad for a school that only a few short years ago was labeled the doormati' of athletics in Forsyth County. l76fSports Divider

A CUT By Robbie Pettyjohn ccording to Sergeant Ledbetter, Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps is a program which teaches students to develop skills in leadership, gives opportunities to lead and achieve, and teaches one more about the real world than do other classesf' The J ROTC has had its highest enroll- ment since it began at West in 1966. There were one hundred twenty-four students currently enrolled. Twenty-one are female students. These exceptional young women are proving that they too can handle any- thing the young men can. Jeyaunka Fulton says she plans to go into the service after high school. Al- though her favorite part of J ROTC is camping, she claims that she enjoys everything. When one first enrolls in J ROTC, he or she starts out as a private. He can earn merits regularly and eventually will be- come private first class. To earn these merits one must get good grades, have good conduct, and dress out every Wednesday in a clean uniform on a regu- lar basis. Sergeant Ledbetter has been an instruc- tor for eight years. He is in his third year here at West. He decided to become an instructor at West when the school system Group photos by Neil Milsap BGV changed to a four-year high school. He explained, UMost of the people I had trained, including second, third, and fourth year cadets, were coming here, and I didnlt want to start out from scratchf, Participants in the Drill Team meet in February through early May. Going on a trip to Fort Bragg, and attending Field Training Exercise for two days were just a few of the many activities the J ROTC did throughout the year. Many of the JROTC cadets received special awards this year. Nine JROTC ca- dets were presented certificates for attend- ing the J ROTC Camp at Fort Bragg. The awards were given to the cadets for their exceptional leadership and performance at the eight-day training camp. Other awards were given to Selina Ridings, Jason Moser, Tammy McLaurin, Tony Gould, Heath Cheek, Charles Paul, Robert Hig- gins, and Jonathan Carlisle for being in the top ten percent of their J ROTC class this year. JROTC is preparatory for future mili- tary service plans. Amera Thompson im- plied this by saying she plans to stay in J ROTC all four years of high school and go into military service afterwards. JROTC can be beneficial to those who have military goals. JROTCfl75
