Many students tried to extend the evening as long as possible by going out before and after the prom. Faye Kapp DRIFTIN' INTO THE NIGHT: Kristi Kapp and Sarah Hewitt prepare for the after-prom party at Kristi's house. Guests enjoyed a late night breakfast by the poolside. BEHIND THE SCENE: Bobbette Love and Bobby Paige look like they have just stepped off a cruise ship. Shannon Pugh's backdrop added the final touch to make last vear's prom memorable. 31, l 4 I v, w ,I Ai- 1 f Stephens Photo Driftin' And Dreomin' Through '86 By Merrily Taylor riftin' and Dreamin ' through the night was how most stu- dents described the 1986 Ju- nior-Senior Prom held at Beneath the Elms. The Junior class and its sponsor, Mrs. Sandy Walls, spent hours planning and organizing to make last yearas prom a success. Shannon Pugh painted a very re- alistic ocean scene backdrop, which took her over ten hours to complete. Although last year's prom was well worth it, students found that the expense of the prom keep rising every year. The prices for renting tuxedos ranged any- where from 560.00 to over 5100.00 Prom dresses were also very expensive. Girls could hardly buy one under 520000. Dressing up was not the only expense either. The tickets for the prom were 510.00 a couple. The dinner was also cost- ly, ranging anywhere from 535.00 to close to 5l00.00. Some couples even rented limosines. Most students had their date planned for the prom several months in advance. There were however, still a few who waited until the last minute. Jimmy Duncan was one of the procrastinators. With only three weeks left to decide, Jimmy asked Sherrill McSwain. Sherrill recalled, Although I was rushed to find a dress, the prom was an exciting evening and I had a lot of fun. It made our friendship all the more specialf' Whether they had it planned weeks in advance or waited to the last minute to decide, couples danced into the night at the 1986 Prom. The music was provided by Magic's WMAG disc jockey, Bill Ayers. Students and faculty enjoyed the just right mixture of slow and fast tunes. Mr. Henson looked like someone right off American Bandstand, doing his rendition of the twist. To finish off the evening, couples at- tended various prom parties or went out for a late night snack before going home. Everyone wanted to keep driftin' and dreamin' through the night. Prom 1986 9
