STANDING ON HER OWN TWO FEET: Junior Wendy Miletello showsjust how happy she is to cheer for the Titans at the Homecoming pep rally. With an anticipated move to the Clemmons area, Wendy tried out for and made the varsity cheerleading squad. The family's plans were changedg they remained in Loui- siana. Wendy, however, decided to make the move on her own, living with Donna Shutt's family for the year. -nr cv' xnuas1'cl.n.r1m..r1..1l unalnwfmrxz alumnus: 1 FIRST ON For many people the high school experi- ence is a memorable time that helps their future. This is a time for young men and women to prepare for adulthood. In the past two decades, students in Winston-Sa- lemfForsyth County have had a short stay in high school - three years, then two years. This three to four year span called high school has existed at West for only eleven of the school's 23 years. In fact, it has only been a four year high school with grades nine through twelve for the past three of those 23 years. Previously, West and all other senior highs in Winston-Salem! Forsyth County had been under a school board devised plan where the students at- tended high school for only two years. This system dated back to 1971 when the WSXFC School System changed to the infamous 4-2-2-2-2 grade division plan to meet regulations for court-ordered inte- gration. The plan required students to at- tend one elementary school for four years, a different school for grades five and six, a junior high school for two years, then a 'Shigh schooln for grades nine and ten and a separate senior high school for grades RECORD eleven and twelve. The four year plan was a welcomec change for most students and parents. I allowed students to attend an elementary school for five years, a middle school foi three years, and a senior high school foi four years. The switch to a four year high schoo plan in Forsyth County has been beneficia to students in several ways. The atmo- sphere on most campuses has been totally altered. For example, this year's senior class has seen many changes during the past three years. Students seem to be more attached to their school. There has been 2 tremendous resurgence in school spirit Students have become more involved ir after school athletics, clubs, and other or- ganizations. By being a part of their schoo for more than two years, students have ha more time to find their place within th school and to learn about and become 2 part of all it had to offer. The Class of 1988 will have a very spe cial senior year. They will be the first clasi to graduate from West after four consecu tive years, and the first four-year graduat ing class ever.
