xt Mrs Susan Helnls US History iSH Asia fu, Mr Ralph Dougan Ath letic Director and Physical Education Department Chairman has worked at West Essex for twenty four years Before coming to West Essex Mr. Dougan taught physical education at the elementary schools in North Caldwell and Rose- land. At West Essex in addi- tion to his duties as a teach- er Mr. Dougan has coached baseball foot- ball soccer and tennis. He explained that in the early years of the school gym teachers had to pitch in wherever they were needed and as a result he had coached a number of different sports. Among his memories, Mr. Dougan recalls the time when eighteen bus loads of students went to watch the soccer team win the state championship. We ve been blessed with a good athletic staff and coaches said Mr. Dougan who has been the athletic director for the last ten years. Mrr Dougan feels that much of his success as an athletic director can be attributed to the coopera- tion and understanding of Mr. Charles Poglieri and Mr. Malcolm Simpson, Mr. Dougan had been offered the opportunity to move on to college coaching but he chose to remain at West Essex.
