We always had an excellent student body and that has made teaching worthwhile said Mrs. Clifton. Mrs. Clifton originally taught at Grover Cleveland High School. ln1961 she was interviewed and recruited for The upcoming school year by Dr. WalterStilIe then the superintendent. She said that she had fully expected twenty-four years ago To still be Teaching at West Essex Today. Having seen many Wes- sex students come and go, Mrs. Clifton believes That we are returning to The stu- dents' willingness To do well. Since The beginning Ms Patrlcla Connors Expository Writin fSurvey English 3 Sterling Memories rs Mary Clifton of The school Mrs Clifton notes that West Essex has gone Through a full cycle. Today students are more interested in education. Stu- dents are more outward now. They seem not To be afraid to ask a question. Three experiences stand out in Mrs. Clifton s mind as most memorable. The first she said was The dedica- tion of The 1973 Milestone To her. Tied for second are fourteen invitations To grad- uation parties in one year and the 1980 state football championship game which she chaperoned. Teaching The same thing year after year is never bor- ing fcr Mrs. Clifton because as she says, Every year you get new students. lT's like a whole new experience and that keeps you very youngl

At West Essex in addi- tion to his duties as a teach- er Mr. Dougan has coached baseball foot- ball soccer and tennis. He explained that in the early years of the school gym teachers had to pitch in wherever they were needed and as a result he had coached a number of different sports. Among his memories, Mr. Dougan recalls the time when eighteen bus loads of students went to watch the soccer team win the state championship. We ve been blessed with a good athletic staff and coaches said Mr. Dougan who has been the athletic director for the last ten years. Mrr Dougan feels that much of his success as an athletic director can be attributed to the coopera- tion and understanding of Mr. Charles Poglieri and Mr. Malcolm Simpson, Mr. Dougan had been offered the opportunity to move on to college coaching but he chose to remain at West Essex.
