Don Price The West Essex Knights, under the tutelage of Head Coach Larry Yarrish, arc working out and planning for the upcoming spring track season. With many holdovers from last year’s team, the Knights are expecting big things this year. Half-miler and 440 star Bill Smart will captain the track squad, along with 6’0” 195 lbs. weight man Bill Mozek. Bill will compete in the discus and javelin for the fourth consecutive year. The distance events should produce several points for the Knights this year. Sophomore Gary Leaman should win many races in the 2 mile race. Junior Don Portice and sophomore Tony Cafiero will once again be depended upon for the mile event. In the sprints, junior Len Griffin is the probable No. 1 man in the 100 and 200. Freshman John Boronow is another likely starter in the short sprints. The 440 runners could be sophomore Matt Forstenhauser, freshmen Keith Brighton, or seniors Don Price and Brian Soroka. The high hurdles will be handled by junior Jeff Newsom and Dave Middlcbrook. Middlebrook, a 6’5” basketball player, will also compete in the intermediate hurdles. Senior Jerry Pierone will also run the intermediates. Jerry earned his varsity letter last year by scoring points in the difficult 330 yard hurdle race. Mike Contaldi will high jump as well as run the intermediate hurdles. Newsom will pole vault with junior Doug Hage. The success of the Knights in the long jump event will depend on sophomore Phil St. George. The weightmen will be led by Captain Mozek and his brother A1 (discus and javelin). Another brother combination: Victor and Eric Vena will enter the shot put and discus. Veteran senior Steve Lambusta (6’3 215 lbs) is a dependable shop-put artist. All told, Coach Yarrish will have his hands full in selecting the starting assignments, but the talent is there, and West Essex could have a successful spring track season.
