1975 Milestone Volume XV West Essex High School North Caldwell, New Jersey Hvvciit DEDICATION 2 In order to be truly involved, a man must understand the lives of those with whom he comes in contact. The 1975 MILESTONE is dedicated to the vitality, humanity and involvement of Malcolm J. Simpson, Principal of West Essex High School. Malcolm Simpson is a quiet man — not a man who would stand out in a crowd, not a man whose voice is heard above others, not a leader who radiates charisma and charm. But make no mistake, Malcolm Simpson is a leader. He is a man whose dedication to excellence be it as a teacher, department chairman or principal has led thousands of students seek his goals. No facet of our lives escapes his notice; and behind the quiet gentle nod or smile he has for us, we feel the depth of his sincerity and involvement in the West Essex community. We are proud of our school. Malcolm Simpson with his strength of character and intrinsic skills has made it a school of which we can be proud. “Involvement is . . . Giving all that you can without spreading it too thin . . . Playing the notes but hearing the music that sings within . . . Joining a club . . . Speaking out . . . 5 Keeping your own opinion but listening to more than a few . . . Running a touchdown or scoring a goal or getting a pin . . . Practicing so hard that the only alternative is to win. Showing your spirit . . . Cheering loudly . . . Or twirling a flag . . . Being able to say that you’re the best without having to brag . Making friends, keeping old ones, and learning to share . . . Growing into a person who’s alive and who’s willing to care . . . Using your talents to become something better than you are . 8 Not stopping before reaching the goal that is glimmering afar.” Susan Emery Table of Contents Dedication....................... Steve DiGeronimo. and Dave Montgomery. Keil made strides in reviving traditionally outstanding football teams at West Essex. Tri-captains were Eric Pierce, Bob Losasso, and Steve Fobcr. Losasso was a fine leader at quarterback, and Pierce established himself as one of the finest running backs in the school's history, rushing for over 1000 yards in his senior season. Tober was a steady performer at center and outside linebacker. Two-way senior players included Phil Seligman. a safety and slot-back; Brian Nelson, a defensive halfback and slot-back; and Barry Kann, a guard and defensive end. Other senior standouts included offensive ends Lance Sisco, Bruce Schilling and Tom Lorenzo, along with interior lineman Mike Terranella and Steve Lambusta. The defense was led by lineman Mark DeTroia, Glenn Barney, Mike Russomano. Mark Quadrel, and Tom Danckwerth. Danckwerth was valuable as a place kicker and punter. The 1974 season brought rewarding accomplishments in West Essex football. With loyal student and faculty support behind them, the Knights worked hard and attained a state title. Under the direction of assistant varsity coaches Dave Montgomery and Steve DiGeronimo, the junior varsity Knights won five of eight games with one tie. The squad consisted of 17 juniors, all of whom contributed to a winning season. Quarterback Mark Lore led a backfield including John Tretter and Chet Stefanelli at the slot positions, and Steve Sargese at fullback. The offensive line was led by guards Mike Bahto and Jack Penndorf. center Sloan Friedman, and split-ends Don Schmidt and John Mastriani. The defense was stubborn in traditional Wessex fashion. Defensive tackle Mike Contaldi was supported by a crew of linebackers, including Jack Gambino, Scot Lord, and Rich Celusek. Defensive ends Tim Caso and Paul Fardelman fronted a defensive backfield that included Jim Hunt and Lou DeLitizia. The Freshman team ended its season with a impressive 5-2-1 record, and tied Morristown for the Jersey Hills Conference Champsionship. The team was well balanced with ten different boys involved in the scoring. The offense scored a total of 132 points while the defense gave up only 42. Head Coach Fred Keil, William Roca. John Dull. Coach Joe Garvey began the season with extreme optimism, especially when the Knights jumped off to win nine of their first eleven games. The squad, comprised mainly of seniors, began to falter in January and February, to finish with a mediocre 6-8 Jersey Hills Conference record, following an impressive 4-0 JHC mark early in the campaign. Eight seniors guided the Knights through their demanding schedule, which included exciting victories over Verona, Caldwell (twice), Morris Hills, and Mountain. George Fritz led the team with a 16 point scoring average. Captain Jim Howe and Mark Gennaro were starting guards all season. Mel Svendsen was valuable as a first string backcourt ace and key reserve. Stefe Tober and Chris Carlton were main substitutes in the forward positions. Norbert Sax and Jim Diver played little, but were still vital members of the basketball family at West Essex. The J.V. team had a rewarding season with a record of 13-6-0. The team was made up of mostly underclassmen, but even with these unex- perienced boys, the team had a very good season. Bill Smart BASKETBALL This year the girls basketball team finished their season with the best record ever of 22-3. The girls were undefeated in the Jersey Hills Conference and lost only one game during regular season. The girls made it to the semi-finals of the State Tournament defeating Plainfield, Nutley, West Side Newark, and Mother Seton, losing to Phillipsburg in the semi-finals. The girls team was seated first in the Essex County Tournament. They defeated East Orange Catholic, and Montclair, but lost to West Side Newark in the finals. This year’s girls team, coached by Miss Kay Weidemann, produced a winning record and showed a great deal of talent and skill that made the season what it was. With many holdovers from last year’s team, the Knights are expecting big things this year. Half-miler and 440 star Bill Smart will captain the track squad, along with 6’0” 195 lbs. weight man Bill Mozek. Bill will compete in the discus and javelin for the fourth consecutive year. The distance events should produce several points for the Knights this year. Sophomore Gary Leaman should win many races in the 2 mile race. Junior Don Portice and sophomore Tony Cafiero will once again be depended upon for the mile event. In the sprints, junior Len Griffin is the probable No. 1 man in the 100 and 200. Freshman John Boronow is another likely starter in the short sprints. The 440 runners could be sophomore Matt Forstenhauser, freshmen Keith Brighton, or seniors Don Price and Brian Soroka. The high hurdles will be handled by junior Jeff Newsom and Dave Middlcbrook. Middlebrook, a 6’5” basketball player, will also compete in the intermediate hurdles. Senior Jerry Pierone will also run the intermediates. Jerry earned his varsity letter last year by scoring points in the difficult 330 yard hurdle race. Mike Contaldi will high jump as well as run the intermediate hurdles. Newsom will pole vault with junior Doug Hage. The success of the Knights in the long jump event will depend on sophomore Phil St. George. The weightmen will be led by Captain Mozek and his brother A1 (discus and javelin). Another brother combination: Victor and Eric Vena will enter the shot put and discus. Veteran senior Steve Lambusta (6’3 215 lbs) is a dependable shop-put artist. All told, Coach Yarrish will have his hands full in selecting the starting assignments, but the talent is there, and West Essex could have a successful spring track season. For Mr. James Gill, the blackboard and the chalk were always accom- panied by a measured word on a firm note that conveyed an inspiring humanism beneath the mathematical language. Perceptive minds could always detect the twinkle that rimmed the otherwise cool eyes of Mr. Gill. When he served as Master of Ceremonies for faculty parties, his subtle mirth produced a happy laughter in his colleagues. In years to come, many students who were exposed to his instruction will come to recognize the values he taught that so often remain concealed to callow youth. For years, Mr. Gill advised the Key Club, where many students learned the beauty of service to others and the art of leadership in society. To teach is to affect the lives of others, and in this dimension teaching becomes immortal. Although the stalwart stride that distinguished the presence of Mr. James Gill no longer appears in the corridors of West Essex High School, the lives of all those he touched continue as a monument to his influence. 135 fc . 1 ACTIVITIES MILESTONE Mr. Richard Clarke — Adivsor Ann Funkhouscr — Editor The MILESTONE, W.E.’s yearbook, is the pictorial and literary record of the year’s occurrences.
