West Essex walked over nine of their opponents and were defeated by only four, displaying the best team effort ever at our school. Morris Knolls, previously undefeated, was one of the toughest matches of the season, but our runners defeated them 21-35. Phil Brunnquell, Vince Buttner, and Joe Crawford were the top runners for our team in that race. The next match which proved to be a battle was against Morristown and our runners finished strong against them, but were defeated a 29-26 score. The team defeated most of the rest of their opponents, many by a great margin. The team put in a very fine showing against a number of teams in the tight Jersey Hills Conference race, and they finished fourth, only six points out of third place. Competing against many tough opponents in the Essex County Meet, the Cross Country team surprised the field by upsetting Bloomfield, 99-101. This was the only First Place trophy ever won by a West Essex team in this event. Coming right back, the Knights finished third in the State Sectional Meet, qualifying them for the State race. Leading the team, Phil Brunnquell proved himself to be one of the best runners in the State by placing fourth in Group III. Phil did very well this year, being defeated only once in all dual meets. He broke the school record with a time of 12:46. Captain Vince Buttner was almost always following Phil across the finish line. Through the efforts of Coach Vince Korfmann, the Cross Country team brought home many fine honors to our school. This year's West Essex Field Hockey team, consisting of 14 girls, won their second consecu- tive State Championship. Starting practice Sep- tember 1st, Coach Alimi inspired the girls to develop their skills into a winning squad. The Knights battled fourteen teams. Miss Alimi play- ing the game on the sidelines, while watching her girls knock off all of their opponents. As- sistant Coach White aided the entire program, as well as the Junior Varsity's undefeated success. Opening their regular season, the girls breezed by Montville, 9-0 and Morris Hills, 6-0. Scorers in the two games were Sally Connor, Jane Funkhouser, Jeanne Hall, Sue Hyer, and Janet Schuetz. Later in the season, the team de- feated Livingston. A strong defensive effort made the game easy for goalie Yvonne Erdman, who had only one save. The game against Wayne Valley proved to be difficult, oanne Hall and Sally Connor both scored to help the team squeeze over Wayne Valley 2-1. Wayne Valley was the only team to score against West Essex throughout the whole season. The West Essex team was seeded first for the playoffs. They began at home against Par- sippany Hills and defeated them 3-0. The next team to try its luck at beating the girls was Ridgewood. Meredith Gillespie and Sally Connor both scored to give the team another victory. The girls then went up against a strong Morris- town team which was disappointed with a tight 1-0 loss. There was a great defensive effort on the parts of MaryLou Freyberger, Jane Funk- houser, Nancy Haas, Susan Hunt and Camille Kuta. Coming upon the final game, the Knights met Sayreville, the second seeded team. With both teams out to win, Janet Schuetz came through and scored the only goal of the game. With the exception of the 19-8 loss to Morris Hills, Wessex defeated the remainder of the slate by some startling margins. The first game against Roxbury ended in a 28-8 victory for the Knights. This game provided the confidence the team needed for the season. The wins over Montville and Hanover Park were big games of the linemen and defense. These two games were both shutouts. Parsippany was another important game for the Knights. The backfield went all out to defeat them by a 68-8 score, the highest scoring game this season. The team finished its year with an important win over our rivals, Livingston. The Knights defeated the Lancers 58-12 in the postponed Thanksgiving Day game. The team scored a total of 322 points and allowed only 74 points scored against them. Built around a nucleus of seniors, who began their careers as the school's first undefeated freshman squad, this team rated sixth in the state by Dunkel, named Best Area Team by the Herald-News and finished first in Essex County in total offense. Up front were Captain Roy Elmo, Duncan Ryan, and John Schementi at guard, Rick Pierson, Al Pierce, and Tarah Sowyn at tackle, Bill Kowalski at center, and Bob Ganter at split end. The backfield included George Nelson at quarterback, Captain Rusty Boyle and Tony Brindisi as running backs, Pete Hartley at flanker, and Mark Taras Sowyn Mark Stewart Bob Ganter Duncan Ryan Tony Brindisi Stewart on defense. There is not doubt that football is in its ascendancy at West Essex. There will be oher fine earns in the years to come, but the Class of '72 and their coaches will be remembered as talented, alert, and courageous athletes who didn't know how to quit. The team took the Jersey Hills Confer- ence title and the State Championship, both for the second year in a row. The squad was led by Co-Captains Blair Conley and Tim Unger. The Knights had many difficult challenges during the '71 season, the first being a victory over Harrison. Bob Black and Blair Conley each scored to give the team a 2-1 vic- tory. The first game against Livingston was another hard fought game, ending in a 1-1 tie, the only tie of the season. Co-Captain Tim Unger scored for W.E. West Essex defeated all of the rest of their opponents, ending their season against Livingston. Junior Tom Taylor headed in the only goal of the game, thus clinching the Jersey Hills title. The first playoff game was against Northern Highlands and Tom Fraioli scored the only goal of that game. Morris Knolls was the next opponent to try and topple the Knights, but Blair Conley, Tom Fraioli, and Mark Schnieder each booted one in to defeat them 3-0. Dougan's boys had only one more team in their way before taking the State title. Berkley Heights fell to Wessex 2-1, Co-Captain Blair Conley and Mark Schnieder both scored for the team. The defense, sparked by Larry Kramer, helped our team finish with an 18-0-1 record. Coach Ralph Dougan, along with Coach Benevento, contributed greatly to teams success. Dougan's boys, by their superior play- ing, displayed to the teams of the state that we are again, second to none. J.V. They then went on to defeat Butler by a very close 9-7 win, only one bout from a tie. The girls then had a few heartbreaking scores, losing by only two or three points. The Wilson school came back again to try and overthrow our girls; but the fencers defeated them by a 10-6 margin. Others scoring well this year were Senior Jeff Rosen, and Sophomore Ken Rando, the teams Most Im- proved Player. The fencing team had a variety of opponents this year, in which they scrimmaged against West Point, and met many of the top teams of the State. The team had two good wins this year against Wayne Hills and Pompton Lakes. The fencers defeated Wayne Hills by a 15-12 victory, due to the great efforts of our team Captains. The first game for the varsity was against Wayne Hills, in which our men played very well, defeating them by a score of 64-59. This first game was not the only one of its type. We then went on to top Glen Ridge by a small margin with a 69-64 score. The Knights lost a heartbreaker to Cedar Grove by losing 57-61. The Knights brought it together with the first game of 1972 beating Boonton by a deci- sive 73-57 victory. Morris Hills was the next challenging game for our men on the court, but we were able to overpower them 72-61. The Moun- tain game was quite a surprise for all who attended, for our whole team put out a great effort to defeat them 90-66. The teams top three scorers were Senior Bob Ganter, and Juniors Bill Doran and Tom Taylor. The Most Im- proved Player award went to Bill Doran, and the Most Valuable Player was Co-Captain Bob Ganter. This excellent performance was attributed to the coaching of Miss Kay Weideman, the leadership of the senior captains. Sherry Ross and Mary Lou Freyberger, and last, but not least, a great deal of team work. The State Tournament games were all good games which displayed the power and teamwork of our girls. Memorial in West New York was the first game, in which our girls walked over them by a 92-49 score. Central in Newark was the second game in the tournament, in which our girls out shot them by a 53-44 score. Mendam was the next team on the list, but they went home with a disappointing loss against our girls. North Arlington lost to our girls 60-41, leaving Wayne Valley as the final op- ponent. Although the girls lost the fifth and final game of the State Tourna- ment against Wayne Valley, it was quite an honor in itself to have won four consecutive games in the tournament. The first big win for the team was a very powerful 51-12 win over Wayne Hills. The game against Parsippany Hills showed how the team put it together with a 49-37 victory. The team also scored decisive victories over Livingston, Cedar Grove, and Morris Hills. In view of their fine accomplishments, it appears that the girls basket- ball team will continue in the tradition of true sportsmanship. W.E. The team was led by Captain Kevin Foley and Coach Ed Purdy. The team defeated many of its rivals from other years such as Brick. The first game against Seton Hall was a good 2-1 victory for our men on the ice. We then went ahead to defeat our rivals Livingston by a score of 5-3. Brick, another big contender in the league, tied us in the first game 1-1, but we defeated them in the other two games we had with them. Chatham Township was the next big win for the team, and the of- fense came through with a big 7-3 victory. We started the circuit over again by defeating Seton Hall again by a 6-0 victory, and a 3-3 tie with Montclair. On the third time around, our guys could only pull it together for the Brick and Chatham Township games, finishing out the season by defeating Chatham Town- ship 3-0. This years team did very well thanks to the hard work of many fine players. The Most Improved Player award went to Mike Cassara and the Most Valuable Player award went to Joe Gomez. This team was a team worth rooting for in our eyes, and we are again on the up- swing on the ice. The team broke all their previous records of last year. Under Coach Morey Bobrow and Captain Mark Stewart, the team showed their maturing strength. This year the boys team was in contention in every meet they swam, except Hackensack. The boys scored their first victory against Clifton, by a score of 65-21. Red Bank and Fairlawn were other wins for West Essex. These two meets were closer 52-34 scores. Big wins for our swimmers were over Asbury Park, who were defeated by a 74-17 score, Hoboken, 69-17, and Wayne Hills by a 69-16 score, livingston and Montclair were two very good meets, but unfortunatly were defeated by a very tight 42-44 score in both meets. John Rogers was the top scorer for the foam, finishing the year witr 100 points. Most Valuable Player Jim King was second, racking up 96 points. Other top scorers for the team were Ricky Nunamacher, Jerry Crouter, Jeff Schiffenhaus, Doug Spencer, and Paul Charpentier. Most Improved Player Doug Johnson was next in line with 58 points. This years team came through with a very good record. This was tre first year that the boys were invited to swim in the Essex County meet. Of course the members of this crew Are all deranged and ugly too. All other teams, oh, how they fear Our great team — our line up here. At 98 is Dave McMahon He'll go out and make a stand. He fights hard and tries to win He's won — he's got himself a pin. At 106, well he's my brother, I think Strunck wished he'd been some other. He'll stick the tickler to the Coach And call him Tony, the little roach. At 115 is tough guy Dave On the mat he'll rant and rave. He sweats a lot, he needs some Ban But no one twists like Gumby can. Til is next, he's never late But will he ever make the weight? Here it comes, I guess I'm next But I won't tell, so let it rest. Tony C is '36 He'll work hard and take his licks But a boy named Swanson still wonders yet His match with Tony, he'll never forget. At '41 is two-time champ He likes the mat and there he'll camp. And once he fought like 60 men And poor old Swanson was beaten again. At '48 is Maypo man He drinks honey like no one can. His opponents think that he looks sweet But afterwards, they're all dead meat. Our '57 is not bad Morooch is just quite a lad. To practice he was always late But that's okay, he says he's great. Duncan is our '68 To practice he was never late. He worked hard and sure enough Another champ stood on the bluff. At '78 we had Roy He is such a small, frail boy Opponents thought they had an easy bout But Roy would conquer, with one big clout. Taras Sowyn was the big one His big grin matched the sun. But grinning didn't make him win He would fight and get a pin. So there's our team, and it was good To say I'm proud, I surely would Our record is no mystery THE BEST IN WESSEX HISTORY! This team was a very experienced one, having five out of the top six players being re- turning lettermen. Under the able leadership of Coach Ted Karsen and Captain Joe Anderson, the team was anxious to get out on the greens and win for West Essex. The returning lettermen this year were Seniors Joe Anderson and Bill Redan, along with Bill Mosel, Jeff Liebler, and Rich Mahadeen. Another one of the top players og the team was Joe Damiano, thus the team first six places are filled. Hanover Park and Livingston are two very strong teams that our golfers came up against, these two teams being the only teams that could stand in the way of our making league honors. With the number of experienced golfers we had returning, and the number of new people coming up strong, our golf team showed its opponents that to be defeated by them was a real hard fought game. Resident Golf Expert 106 Joe Anderson Bill Reddan GIRLS Varsity This year's girls' softball team took the field against many tough opponents, and did surprisingly well against all of them. Among the players on this year's team, there were several returning letter- men, along with four freshmen, making a very well rounded team, with strong people in every part of the game. Among the players for the girls' team was Sharon kuta. Sharon, the team pitcher, is also a very strong batter. The only senior on this team was Donna Mar- torano, an outfielder. Karen Flaster, who proved to be an asset to the team also, was another returning letter winner. Some of the new members who provided great skill and talent were Camille Kuta, Diane DeSalvo, Karen Cunningham, and Gina Johnston. Three of the most important games for the girls were against West Orange, Parsippany Hills, and Mountain, all which have been tough competitors in the past. The team this year has been another that has proved to be outstand- ing, for it has had many important victories for our school. The girls' softball team has been one that will prove to be a winning team for years to come, Junior Varsity 107 TENNIS « - O a Fred Braun Ted Cox John Delotto Tom Dughi Bruce Ettinger Mark Ettinger Joe Hoare Steve Ingato Joe Jacangelo Mike Kushma Andy Marvel Steve Sass Paul Sproge Jim St. George Peter St. George Gary Swartz Tim Unger The Boys Tennis team put quite a few marks up in the winning column for West Essex this year. Led by Coach Don Albanese, and Co-Captains Tom Dughi and Tim Unger, the team really pulled itself together to bring home as many victories as possible. The team was an experienced team, with five of the top seven being returning lettermen. Out of all the matches the team had this year, Morris Hills and Montclair were the ones that brought the most difficult challenges for our men on the courts. With top players for the team such as Tom Dughi, Tim Unger, Ted Cox, Andy Marvel, Mark Ettinger, Peter St. George, along with Bruce Ettinger, Steve Sass, Mike Kushma, Joe Jacangelo, and Jim St. George, the tennis team had no diffi- culty defeating their opponents. Coach Albanese felt that the team had a number of fine individual players, but working as a team would have to be work for all of the members. As a first year coach, he was very hopeful and anxious for one of the most successful seasons in the history of West Essex. Co-Capt. Tom Dughi Co-Capt. Tim Unger 108 GIRLS This year the girls7 tennis team showed its strength for West Essex by putting forth one of its finest showings. This is a fairly young team with many of the starting players still having two or three years left on the team. Nancy Haas, a sophomore who is a returning letterman, will be playing singles. Others returning were Mary Lou Freyberger, Linda Keenan, Leslie Weld, Melanie Zucker, and Robin Miele. The girls came through this year with a big improvement over last year. Last year's record was not good, but this year, out of the seventeen matches, the girls came through with a much better record of wins. Glen Ridge and Livingston are the tough matches for our girls, both this year and in past years. The girls have all worked very hard this year to bring home honors to West Essex, and the girls' team is definitely on the upswing at West Essex. 109 TEAM u ot Capt. These top people were almost always good for a first or second place medal, although the team still needed some people to follow up behind them. This years' team, under Coach Larry Yarrish, has many fine returning lettermen, such as Phil Brunnquell, Joe Crawford, Alan Pierce, Jim New- som, Tom Taylor, Peter Guletsky, and Vince Ricigliano. With this strong leadership, along with others who are tops in their event, our track team has a good unbreak- able foundation. Morris Knolls and Morristown are two of the biggest challenges that the team comes up against in its regular season. Our team has many people heading up the dif- ferent events, the men who are real promising for the success of the team. Joe Crawford and Tony Martino lead the mile run, while Vince Buttner and Phil Brunn- quell head up the two mile run. Peter Guletsky is our strong man in the shorter distance runs, along with Mark Adams who doubles as a long jumper. Tom Taylor, the hurdler for the team, and Mark Sisco, the pole vaulter, are both juniors. Alan Pierce is our strong man on the weights throwing both the shot put and the discus. Jim Newsom finishes off the starters by throwing the javelin, thus rounding out the team completely. The track team should be very proud of its record this year for our team. The team has many fine people who will be returning to the team next year, although we will also be losing many fine seniors. However the returning lettermen should provide us with a nucleus to continue our winning ways. The first few days are frighten- ing, as the confusing maze of halls and the giant seniors cause many apprehensive moments. After awhile each student, be- coming used to the new routine, settles down. He makes new friends, learns new things, finds new interests. Nancy Nugent's experience as an AFS student in New Zealand represents an out- standing adjustment that some underclassmen make.
