Finishing the season with a 7-5 record, the team placed fourth in the Jersey Hills Confer- ence. The team showed consistent improvement with each passing meet and achieved favorable show- ings in both country and state meets. In the Essex County Meet, the team finished 10th while in the State Sectional for Group III schools, Junior Phil Brunnquell placed first. The Cross Country team should be strong in the future with the experienced running of the returning sophomores and juniors, and the addition of an undefeated freshman squad. MVP: Phil Brunnquell MIP: Vince Buttner 120 Field Hockey 1970 VARSITY Coach Alimi MVP: Jane Sala MIP: Jill Seiler The Varsity Field Hockey team completed its most successful season this year by accumulating a 12-0-0 record. The accomplishments of this past season were well deserved by the team, 10 of which were Seniors, and their coach, Miss Linda Alimi. In compiling the fine rec- ord, the team demonstrated skills, strategy and spirit far superior to their opponents. While finishing 1st in the Con- ference and 1st in the State, the team eclipsed many previous rec- ords. Offensively, 70 goals were scored by the team, 29 by Junior Sally Connor, S more than the pre- vious mark of 24. Another for- ward, Jill Seiler, scored 23 times. The stingy defense allowed only seven goals during the course of the season. The team won memorable vic- tories over Livingston, Wayne Val- ley and Morristown, a team West Essex had never before beaten. Despite the graduation of 10 of the 13 members of the Varsity squad, the future of Field Hockey at West Essex is bright as there are many promising prospects on the J.V. squad. 122 West Essex 6 West Essex 6 West Essex 14 West Essex 6 West Essex 3 West Essex 7 West Essex 6 West Essex 6 West Essex 2 West Essex 3 West Essex 3 West Essex 8 Dover 0 Morris Hills 0 Mountain 0 Livingston 2 Morristown 1 Hanover Park 2 Chatham Boro 0 Parsippany Hills 0 Wayne Valley 1 Parsippany 0 Verona 1 Caldwell 0 Co-Captain Gayle Paglieri Co-Captain Cindy Schneider Wendy Large Carol Faggiani Jill Seiler Mary Allan Undefeated! In addition to showing their enthusiasm and dedication to football, the coaching staff instilled in the team that same spirit and determination which led our gridders to a commendable 5-3-1 record. At the beginning of the season, the team lacked players with varsity experience at most of the positions. As the weeks progressed, West Essex gained for itself a for- midable reputation among those teams vying for the conference title. The Knights foiled Boonton’s and Hanover Park’s chances for the undisputed possession of first place only to have their own hopes dashed by a margin of 14 points and 3 games. The 1970 Football team boasted of an almost impenetrable defense and a capable offense. In gaining recognition for being 1 in Essex County for Total Defense, West Essex allowed their opponents only 61 points in 9 games, 6 of which were scored in the second half. The offensive unit with an explosive ground game, accumulated 178 points and 2,434 total yards, good enough for 7th place in the county for Total Offense. With another undefeated Freshman team and highly successful Sophomore and Junior Varsity teams, as well as the lettermen returning to next year’s squad, the 1971 team will have the potential to go all the way. w. His varsity team showed considerable improvement over the course of the season. The defense improved with each game and played an important role in the memorable 58-57 upset of Morris Hills. The three leading scorers were all seniors: Mike Cummings, Van Taylor, and Jim McGlumphy, respectively. In addition to his scoring, Van Taylor provided the team with keen ballhandling. Cummings’ fine per- formance won him an honorable mention in the Herald-News All-Area awards. This season laid a solid foundation for the coming years, as many talented underclassmen gained valuable playing experience on the varsity and J.V. levels. The girls performed well in all aspects of the game, pitching, bat- ting, and fielding, and provided a rewarding coaching experi- ence for Mrs. Linda Keeney. Indoor Track In preparation for the spring track season, the Indoor Track team this winter competed in a number of meets at the Jersey City Armory. The Knights were well represented in the four individual strokes, as well as in the relays, turning in many excellent times as they gained five victories against twelve losses. Fine individual performances marked the girls’ season, which showed an 8-3 record. Captain Margene Triner and the Rubber Duckies” were always strong with relay efforts and posted a number of school records. Using the West Essex Y as their home pool, the swim teams have come a long way since their introduction as a club three years ago. The ’70- 71 team not only compiled the best record in the school’s history, but also established several firsts. West Milford, Caldwell, and Morris Hills were defeated for the first times by the West Essex Matmen. Many will say the height of the season was the West Essex-Caldwell match. At one point the Caldwell team led West Essex by a score of 18-6. With the successive wins in the heavier divisions, climaxed by a pin by our undefeated senior, Nils Strandskov, West Essex won by a score of 20-18. All the wrestlers contributed to the finest season a West Essex wrestling team has ever had. The following deserve special mention for their individual accomplishments: Captains Brindisi, Elmo, and Strandskov, who in their own divisions set only the best examples for their teammates; Tony Cassera, W.E.’s 130 lb. wrestler, who had an individual record of 10- 3-1, and was also an important asset to the team; John Bergen, W.E.'s 123 lb. wrestler, who started his varsity career halfway through the season, obtaining a record of f-4, and went on to win the title of District 8 Champion. Without the tireless hours put in by the coaches and team, all of these accomplishments could never have been realized. 143 Tom McDonough Captain Nils Strandskov District 8 Champion Regional I Champion Lee Jones JUNIOR VARSITY SQUAD Mr. Stan Scher, Junior Varsity Coach 145 Baseball With five returning lettermen and many outstanding members of last year’s Junior Varsity Squad, the 1971 West Essex team combined experience with power. The outfield as well as the infield was stocked with many capable fielders, and the pitching staff showed improvement with each of the nineteen games of their schedule. Coach Robert Schnauffcr was looking towards a good season with the return of a lot of his talented lineup. Walt Kowalczyk Charlie Bray FRESHMAN SQUAD JUNIOR VARSITY SQUAD 147 Gary Page Jay Smith Rich Petruzzelli Golf Golf anyone? With Essex Fells Country Club serving as the home course, the golf team was off and swinging early in the spring. The team, consisting mostly of underclass- men, many of whom were seasoned golfers, undertook an eighteen match schedule with the hopes of capturing an- other championship for West Essex. Girls’ Tennis Under the direction of Mrs. Sharon Mulholland, the girls tennis team began practice back in March. This year could be considered a building year, as there were few seniors participating. Much of the success of the season was due to the marked improvement in the hardworking underclassmen. Senior Gayle Paglieri was the captain and also played a key singles position. Fencing 149 Tennis The West Essex tennis team began its season in the first week of April, with a match against Montclair. In addition to the returnees who played on last year’s squad, many talented freshmen and improped players saw considerable action during the 23 match schedule. Led by Captain Tom Dughi, the boys faced many of the highly ranked high school tennis players in the state.
