THE BLUEJAY DIARY September 29, 1954-lfifcdrzesday West was chosen to elect a queen for the Safety parade to represent the police women's group. Mary Grace Murff will represent us on a fioat and Judy Grif- hs the beauty contest, another part of the Safety parade. Also, the world series opened today and everyone banded in the auditorium to see it on television. Club skits were rehearsed in the auditorium at third period. Sirptenzbcr 30, 1954-Thursday In the auditorium at first period we had a program on the different clubs of the school. Each club had a skit or songs to sing about their club. The Allied Youtl1, for instance, sang Good Ole Mountain Dew and portrayed a hilarious skit, Dressed in hillbilly style some characters portrayed brothers and sisters who had just come to town and attended an Allied Youth Meeting, putting on for them their interpretation by song of Allied Youth. October 1, 1954-Friday Pep meeting in the morning. 'through rainy weather the Bluejays battled against DuPont, losing 26-0. Mud was one obstacle. Bobby Shaver fell out in the game and was carried away in the ambulance to the hospital for an appendicitis attack. There were not as many casualties this night, 'but Bluejay spirit lacks. October 4, 1954--Monday Virgil King, one of the fractured crew, appeared today with his cast off and his leg as good as new. He is the first to have a cast removed. Don Corn also dropped out of the gang of crutches. The Men's Club drive is still on parade. October 5, 1954-Tu-esday The Hrst seven rows in auditorium will be reserved for Seniors. Try-outs for Senior play, Best Foot Forward, are today and this evening. ln the auditorium a speech was given by the Fire Marshal and a lawyer of civic affairs at heart, on fire prevention. The hre prevention parade is tonight. October 6, 1954-Wednesday 'Students signed up for clubs today. October 7, 1954-Thursday Blucjay spirit is riding high againl There was a long pep meeting this morning. The spirit was outstanding and it reminded you of tournament time. Coach Shapiro brought the football boys on stage and stressed how much good school spirit means to the team and that he hopes we don't let them down. The students were sur- prised and honored to have Doc at the pep meeting. We promised to score half the game for Mr. Oliver and half for Doc fthe last halfl. There was an array of students and faculty who expressed to us their feeling for the game tonight. Demonstrations by the students also took place. WE ARE ALL-OUT TO BEAT EAST. Tonight at the game we were defeated 24-6. Our spirit in the first quarter gave us a touchdown. A beautiful pass was received by Vaughn DuBose and he went over to give us a 6-6 tie. An excellent game was played by the boys. October 8, 1954-Friday . There was a Senior Class meeting at 8:30 tlns morn- ing. The purpose of the meeting was to elect Senior Class officers. October 11, 1954-Monday Mr. Tom Keysaer came out to VVest to organize bowl- ing teams for Youth Incorporated. Student Council met today. The P.T.A. drive for membership begins to- morrow. October 12, 1954-Tiwsdoy Student Council reported that committees were work- ing on a Bluejay Directoryg there will be a homecoming dance after Litton game, and homecoming parade after school. A film was shown in the auditorium on This is By SHIRLEY CROWELL Nashville. October 13, 1954-Wednesday vClubs meetitodayl A Pep Club will be organized! E-ignsnare beginning to appear around school Beat Hills- oro. October 14, 1954-Thursday There was a Pep meeting this morning at 8:15. Coach spoke to us about the spirit that should be at the Hills- boro game. He brought back memories of the spirit of bygone days, One year a boy Went over to Hillsboro before a game put up a West High Banner on Hills- boro's flag pole and cut the rope and greased the pole as he came down. First P.T.A. meeting tonight at 7:30 in auditorium. October 15, 1954-Friday There was a Pep rally in gym at 8:15. We're out to get those cookie pushers. West Winds given out today! Streamers were made in auditorium at lunch periods. West ears were decorated to beat Hillsboro and they entered into Burro's homecoming parade. Very COLD night for the game and rain also interfered. West played a pretty good game. Jerry Appleton did the un- believable, on the kick-off made a 103-yard touchdown. The rivalry between the Bluejays and the Burros upset the game around two or three minutes before official time was gone. The Burros could not stand themselves being sopped up by the tea-sippers. The final score was Bur- ros 20 and West 7. Vaughn DuBose was our only casualty this night and he was carried to the hospital. October 18, 1954-Monday The Personality and Future Teachers Clubs met today at the third period. This is the final day for the P.T.A. contest! Report Cards today!!! Student Council also met today. Only four days of school this week-hip-hip- hurrayl ! October 19, 1954--Tuesday The football team announced the queen and her at- tendants for the homecoming. There will be a band competition at East High tonight and VVest will par- ticipate. Student Council is disturbed about the audi- torium behavior. Charles Bonny and Mary Alice Hearn represented VV est in a Juvenile Delinquency panel today. October 20, 1954--Wednesday The pictures of the cast of the play will be made to- day. The Majorettes brought back A ratings from the band competition last night. October 21, 1954-Thursday The newly elected officers of the Sophomore Class were announced. The east for the Senior play was also announced. There was a Pep meeting this morning! Beat Isaac Litton! l l October 22, 1954-Friday HOLIDAY! HOMECOMINGI The Homecoming parade was at 2:00 P.M. There were cars galore, over 30. Decorations were outstanding. They will award a first prize of S52 to the best decorated and most original car. A second prize of SBI will be awarded also. Carr Grigg took movie pictures of the cars. Before the parade we had a pep meeting! Tonight Litton beat 'West 58-6. Our boys played hard! Bobby Shaver made the touch- down. No one knew about it until about two or three minutes later. George Stern began jumping up and down shouting touchdown but we didn't believe it!!! During the half, of course, the Queen and her attendants were presented with white mums and the attendants with a corsage of a mum. Butch had to be prompted several times before he would kiss Indy. Also, it took forever for him to put her crown on correctly. The three con- vertibles were driven into a heart formed by the band.

October 25, 19543-Monday It was announced that Ann Jones won the S2 prize for the best car in the parade and Margie Eller came in second. This is Courtesy Week. The Senior class had a meeting. Buy an ad for the ZEPHYR. Sell as many ads as can. October 26, 1954-Tuesday .The choir put on a program this morning in the audi- torium of their selections was Dry Bones an old favorite. October 27, 1954-Wednesday Clubs met today! October 28, 1954-Thursday Pep meeting. The spaghetti supper from 5 to 7 was delicious! Game against Ryan. Ryan beat 41-0. Very messy game and night. October 29, 1954-Friday Ticket sales begin for Senior play. November 2, 1954-Tuesday ln the auditorium we had a Freedom Forum from M.B.A. which was very interesting! November 3, 1954-Wednesday - .Clubs met today. Dramatic Club was the guest of the Y-Teens Talent Show. November 5, 1954-Friday There was a pep meeting this morning in gym. This is our last game of the football season and it is against Central. Central won 13-6. N ave-mber 8, 1954-Monday Clubs! Senior meeting! After much discussion, a formal graduation was decided upon. Girls will wear white formals and carry red roses, while boys will wear white dinner jackets. This will be a truly traditional West High graduation, known for its exquisite beauty. November 9, 1954-Tuesday The Sociology Class organized a talent program con- sisting of famous names such as: Joyce Paul, Jane Glasgou, Philip Clark, Bill Green, and Jack Daily. Fif- teen cents was the charge to see the show and all money shall be presented to the United Givers Fund. November 10, 1954-Wednesday Clubs met today. Butch Stephens, Janice Setters and Nita Jordan are representing West at a Student Council 'Convention in Jackson, Mississippi. November 11, 1954-Thursday The Senior play skit was given this morning. November 12, 1954-Friday Senior play! Wonderful! Best Foot Forward, probably the best Senior play given at West. Around 900 people attended this opening night. Forty people are in the play. November 13, 1954-Saturday The second night of Best Foot Forward. The cast presented Mrs. Alder with yellow roses and a S20 check. Also Miss Harris was presented a gift. November 15, 1954-Monday Clubs met today. There will be an N.F.L. meet to- night at Madison. This is book week and everyday there will be a book review over the P.A. system. November 16, 1954-Tuesday The Cohn glee club put on the program in the audi- torium. Coach Shapiro presented the student body a blue and gray banner which had written on it: West- Championship Spirit! November 17, 1954-Wednesday Junior High won first basketball game yesterday. November 18, 1954-Thursday Open house to the parents of students at West tonight from 7:00 P.M. to 9:30 P.M. The parents visited their child's homeroom to register. The Future Teachers Club members served as ushers. There was a program later in the auditorium where each special department of the school was explained or demonstrated. Refresh- ments were served afterwards! November 19, 1954-Friday Pep meeting. VVe played against Greenbrier tonight and we won 51-37! Wonderful! Eddie Greer scored the most points! November 22, 1954-Monday First 'workshop of West Wim! was held today at the 3rd period. Mr. Jack Setters was the guest speaker. In the auditorium there was a film on dental health. The Key Club is sponsoring the devotionals this week. November 23, 1954-Tuesday Key Club initiation was today. West beat Franklin 54-30. It was cold the hrst half but we pulled through. November 24, 1954-Wednesday .XNest lost by three points to Howard. An Inter- faith Thanksgiving program was given at the Jewish Community Center. Y-Teens, Hi-Ys and the Jewish Council participated. We are out for Thanksgiving holidays! ! ! November 29, 1954-Monday Report Cards! Clubs! Nofvember 30, 1954-Tuesday West won against Lipscomb 51-38. In the auditorium at 3rd period VVest's little symphony gave a concert. We also had a pep meeting! December 1, 1954-Wednesday Clubs! Derember 2, 1954-Thursday Clubs! West Iflfindl December 3, 1954-Friday Pep meeting! West won over Springfield! Score 39-3Z!. December 6, 1954-Monday ZEPHYR drive begins today and lasts all week. We can. buy one for 54.00 in thc lunchroom at 4th and 5th periods. December 7, 1954-Tuesday The N.F.L. brought back a trophy from Cohn last night. VVest beat Ryan 51-46. Good playing! Clubs today! December 8, 1954-Wednesday Clubs l' December 10, 1954-Friday We played against East and won by a narrow margin of two points, 50-48. The most exciting game since the tournaments ! December 13, 1954-Mofidagf Christmas mailbox in the hal! this week. Buy Christ- mas seals. December 14, 1954-Tuesday 45Pep meeting lst period and we won over North, 59- Derember 17, 1954-Friday We played Woodlawn tonight and won. Last day of school before Christmas HOLIDAYS!!! January 3, 1955-Monday Great day! We are already back in school again after two wonderful weeks of iun. -No one wants to study though. J ammry 4, 1955-Tuesday Pep meeting. Tonight we beat M.B.A. C46-36J. Played great ball! Eddie Greer was the most outstanding. Jommry 7, 1955-Friday West beat Peabody 50-31, a wonderful and fast game. Four of our main players fouled out!!! January 10, 1955-Monday West won cup in a tie with East in N.F.L. NVe hosted over 200 contestants. Jammry 11, 1955-Tuesday ' VVe play Cohn tonight: shakers, balloons, etc. are to he made after school. Cohn gave us our second defeat C47-455. VVe are placed third in thc N.I.L. standings now. In the auditorium we had a speaker, Mr. Jones, from Belmont Methodist Church who spoke to us on Love and Marriage. Tlns program was the best given all year.
