Born in September of 1937, he was conceived by the student body of that year to match the colors, blue and grey, chosen to represent XVest. A growing, young bird, the Blue Jay wanted everyone to know of his presence, so, in that hrst year, he started a school newspaper, the lVc.x'f l'V'I.7llf,, named after Percy Bysshe Shelley's beautiful Ode to the VVest Wfindf' Wfhen the students decided to publish an annual which would record the Blue Jay's life from year to year they named it the ZIEPIIYRV, which means the gentle west wind, and matched the name chosen for the newspaper. Thus, the ZEPHYR came into being to furnish a book of memories for all who hold Wfest dear. As he grew up, the Blue jay entered the lives of many more VVesterners, and his spirit and sportsmanship came to be an example to all the succeeding members of the NVest student body, until, in 1955, his voice reached a mighty crescendo, when, with his cries of All the way for Doc,', in honor of the greatly beloved retiring princi- pal, Dr. Yarbrough, one of the Blue Jay's foster parents, he won the state basketball championship for the 'fourth time. In l955, he welcomed a new principal, who has won a place in the heart of the Blue lay. Because the Blue Jay has guided VVest End High School through another happy, successful year, to be depicted in the following pages, and because he is the beloved symbol of Wfest to all of her students and alumni, we the editors have based the theme for this year's ZEPHYR on the Blue lay. ANITA Gossnirr, IRENE MUITR C0-Editors Through his uuselfish spirit and untiring efforts, he has endeared himself to the faculty and the students. For this, for the zealous and vigorous manner with which he has assumed the leadership of our schoolg for his inspirational guidance: and for all that he has done for the lnenelit of XfVest, we, the graduating class, with humble sincerity and a feeling oil' gratitude, dedicate the 1955 ZEPIIYR to MR. These piddling pencil pushcrs are Roberta Carr, of the Herald Post, Edith Gowen of the Tribune Post, Paul Scott of the Gazette Postg and Catherine Cope of the Fence Post. They are trying to scrape to- gether a story from the smatterings of information Chief Engineer Nvillie Clevenger offers them. Jerry Davis, press agent for the expedition, is lending him a helping hand, though. Bong! Bong! It's president of the United States, Butch Stephens, trying to get our attention, please. I have two announcements to make. l'm going to make the first one hrst, because it saves time that way. It is: Vtfould Admiral Larry Scott, Nobel Lauriate Juice Ed Gaines, VVac Betty Wfard, and Mrs. America Alan Saturn, please step forward and load the baggage on the ship. The second is: VVhat's his name, oh yeah, will Thomas, uh uh, Taylor please call home. You forgot your lunch. l.et's go aboard now and see the crew in action. There we see Professors Stan von Hagen and Max Pollack checking the doodleherg-seismograph, that is commonly known as the paper towel dispenser. Say, the scenery has suddenly improved, as we see Anita Riley, Barbara Rosenbloom, and Gaile Shepherd, the hostesses, cleaning the control panel, while Principal Pilot Ernest Posner and Co-Principal Pilot Ted CHugoj Vililson check the 'fuel supply. After all, who would want to run out of gas halfway between Here and Scotto? As I leave the ship, I see some of the prominent personages of the country aboard for the iirst trip. Say, spaceship de- signer Glenn Vifest, who painted that beautiful pink pic- ture there on the wall? Wl1y that's a portrait of Nancy Lamastus, the famous trampaline artist, painted by my wife, the former Carolyn Dunlap. Better get back to the observation area now to watch the final take-oif. W'onder what the last minute odds are? Suzanne Lutin thinks the thing is going to blow up before it takes off. On the other hand, Jon Wilsoii is giving ten-to-one odds to movie star Barbara Ramsel, who always did enjoy exciting moments. VVait! Hold the ship. We have two late arrivals, Jane McDaniel and Johnnie Rogers, who are hoping to get on before Larry D. Ferguson closes the curtain. Alas, the awaited moment arrives. Finally the party is over. The ship has been painted, the constitution has been completed, Artie is awake, the band has quieted . . . a heavy silence falls over the crowd. Suddenly a lone bgure approaches the ship. It is Teddy Tiesler. He is carrying a small weird box. From this he selects a match. He strikes it. The pink flames dance around the fuse. It catches. Teddy runs and screams, Five . . . Four . . . Three . . . Two . . . One . . . BAZOOM! The ship streaks away towards planet Scotto! Page I Qu: gt 6 , Q Q60 mik- 96 FIN wx wsu 5 i . The Jays easily won their first two games, but were upset by Howard 51-48. It marked the hrst time that W'est had lost on its home floor in two years. Recovering from their shocking upset, VV est was spurred on to win its next eight games, beating such arch rivals as Lipscomb, Springfield, Ryan, East, North, 'Wood1awn, M.B.A., and Pea- body. Playing before a capacity crowd, 'Wfest again was upset by powerful Cohn, 47-45, when victory was snatched away in the fading few seconds. Sandwiched in with a loss to Howard, Vlfest ti1ne remaining, Eddie Greer hit a hve 'loot hook, and 1iVest came home, victorious with a score of 58-57. In the following week, came the biggest thrill. Losing by a score of 34-21, at the half against East, the Wfesterners put on a magnihcent rally to top the Eagles, 57-52. VVest finished the season with a 17-6 record, and began making prepara- tions, lor the forthcoming District Tournament. The students began making streamers and blowing up balloons. A lengthy pep rally was held. and a new chant of Make it tive in 55 was incorporated. Playing Ryan for the third time, 1Vest found herself ahead the entire game, only to see a Ryan guard hit a field goal with less than 7 seconds remaining, and lVest was beaten 50-49. Everyone took the disheartening loss in stride: and when all the hollering was over, the played mighty Hillsboro. VV ith the Blues trailing great VVest Student Body proudly stood erect and by one point with less than a minute of playing sang their Alma Mater. WEST I954--I955 BASKETBALL RECORD lifes! Second row: Harrison, Tallent, Jones, Hermann, Duncan, Emery, Kirby. Following in the footsteps of their varsity brothers, the B Team Jays, displayed one of the best teams that XV est has ever seen. The B's compiled an amazing record of 22 victories to only one defeat. The season began with easy wins over Franklin, Howard, Lipscomb, Springfield, and Ryan. Then came the big clash with East. Trailing the entire game the Jays put on a fine last quarter rally to stop the Eagles, 32-27. XV est went on to break a B Team scoring record by beating a small Vlfoodlawn team 75-16. VV est continued with easy wins over M.B.A., Peabody, Cohn, Howard, and several other leading schools. Then came the traditional battle with Hillsboro, and what a bat- tle it was. XVhen the Hnal gun had sounded, 'W est was a winner 37-35 in two overtime periods. lVest closed out its regular season with several easy wins, sandwiched in between an upset loss to Cohn, 39-36. Tournament time came and tl1e Blues were od again. They rolled over North, 53-24, and beat Howard for the third time, 63-48. In the finals, Wfest overcame an early M.B.A. lead to beat the Maroons 46-40, and cop the 18th District B Team title for the second time in three years. Much gratitude must be given to Coach Kennedy and his boys. B-TEAM I954-I955 BASKETBALL RECORD XV c st XV est VV est West West XVest XV est Page 102 Franklin Howard . Lipscomb Springfield Ryan . . .
