Are you the self-reliant hiker who enjoys the invigorating exercise, the sense of achievement, the beauty and wonder of life, and the tried friendship of his companions? Or do you prefer the more com- fortable role of a hitch-hiker, being carried along by swiftly moving vehicles, eager to arrive at new places, stimulated by actions and change around you rather than within you? Is yours the nature of one who loves to mingle with people, to observe their ways and understand them and do it in an unhurried way? Or are you, perhaps, the type of person who is less inclined to exertion and looks more favorably upon the more effortless way of being carried along to new situations and changing scenes? Whichever highway or road you choose, your progress and your destination will be more meaningful and significant, if you travel joyously, alert to the beauties of all seasons, and are persistent in your quest. All hazards and obstacles can then be met courageously and, so, more easily. Profit by such experiences and you will find your traveling along the high school highway ennobling, rewarding and maturing' WILLIAM C. KNOELK, Principal. 28 You are entering second floor. The highway through high school is often long and difhcult for travelers. It would be impossible for all of us to successfully traverse this road withcut someone to help point out the tight way. One of the best guides of confused and misguided people is Mr. Whitcomb. The side road to his office of information has been worn smooth by the feet of many travelers. He is always ready to turn our faces in the right direction and set our feet on the right path. Without Mr. Whitcomb, we would often find ourselves lost in dangerous places. Thank you, Mr. Whitcomb, for guiding us onto the wider road of life that awaits us. 29 Do you suffer from sour notes? MADGE ANDERSON I realize you children are terribly misunderstood. With only eight lettermen returning from the Forty-nine squad, the gridders from West showed amazing drive and the will to win. Our boys from Highland, though underweight, racked up a very impressive list of moral victories. LINCOLN: After seeing our boys tie overrated Lincoln in West's initial grid start, we knew that we had a team to be proud of, no matter how the team came out in the end. BAY VIEW: Bay View scored only one touchdown against our hard fight- ing men. West made two brilliant and gallant goal line stands which showed the stuff of which our gridders really were made. An attempted field goal by Bay View was blocked and picked up by a Bay View man who ran for the touchdown. PULASKI: Pulaski, although a more experienced team, had its biggest battle with West during its fight to take its second grid championship in two years. West was shoved around, but it shoved Pulaski around, too. Pulaski had to push and run hard to gain every inch of ground against West. EAST: East and West clashed in one of their usual rivalries at South Stadium. West, although score- less, played a very colorful and different brand of football against a much heavier team. TECH: West gave the Tech Boilermakers a run for their money in Tech's homecoming game. Although losing by thirteen points, West made sure that Tech would remember this game for a long time to come. Against Tech, the boys from Highland used some new plays. West played a very unique kind of football against Tech during the entire game, and had the Boilermakers worried. Geske. a very decisive moral victory. West did not yield as much ground on King's running plays as had West's previous opponents. Dave Korpella saved the game many times by stopping King's passing plays. NORTH: The North game was the best game West played during the season. West showed good defensive and offensive football. The hard running of Bottoni, Bruhn, Orton, and Wisotzke kept North deep in its own territory most of the game. jim King, the star from North, was stopped flat every time he tried to gain a yard against our hard hitting team. The clincher play was that in which West reached the 18 yard line of North, and John Lang was sent in to attempt a field goal. He made it and sent the West stands into turmoil. The field goal was the only one made in the city conference during the 1950 season. It was West's first win in seven starts. JUNEAU: With the hard running of Kreckler, Trautman, and Tom- czak, the final game ended with victory for the boys from Highland. The Juneau Pioneers were the most spirited players West met during the entire season, but West, nevertheless, came out on top. During the entire season superb catching was done by ends Lowell Littaritz, West's only all city man: Scott Netzelg John Schuster: and Don Tup- per. The good job of centering was done by George Rott. Blocking was the job of Ted Dox- tater, Ralph Dressler, Tom Hansen, john Mijoko- vich, Dave Petersen, Tom Porth, and Phil Schill. Andy Stefan, john Lang, and Kurt Webster also did a very splendid job in the backfield. Visit the Cozy Corner Inn 64 FROSH-SOPH FOOTBALL TEAM Q55 ld O ,Qu E rx fm I: dy. R0 R. Hats off to center, Scott Netzel, and guard, Ray Kreckler, who made all-city Basketball team. Net- zel was given the position of forward, and Kreck- ler, that of guard. Netzel had 208 points, thus beating John Meleski's record of 206 points. This is the second consecutive year that West has had two men on the all-city quintet. West had 9 conference wins against 2 losses. Altogether West won 11 games and lost 2, which is a very impres- sive achievement. Summary of games: EDGERTON: In a very low scoring game played at Edgerton, West beat their first opponents 47 to 34. RACINE PARK: An out of town game saw West beat the Racine quintet and win 42 to 40 with Netzel dumping in 16 points. CUSTER: West won its first confer- ence game by overrunning Custer 52 to 31. George Koepp made 12 points for West and also scored honors for the game. SOUTH: West's Redmen had a hot night, hitting the 60 point mark for the first time. The game ended up 60 to 42. Netzel and Koepp both dumped in 14 points to split the scoring honors. NORTH: The Redmen tripped North 51 to 48. Jerry Wall and Scott Netzel each had 14 points. KING: The towels were saturated after this game, for there was no beating this red hot King quintet. In the last minute of play West dumped in seven straight points, but King had built up a commanding lead and won 60 to 57. Netzel and Kreckler had 14 points apiece. TECH: West got into the win column again by beating Tech 54 to 57. Netzel had l6 points and Koepp had I5 points to their credit. This was the last game for all-city George Koepp and Chuck Quirk, who graduated in mid-year. jUNEAU: The Redmen racked up another victory by beat- ing the Pioneers 60 to 40. Netzel hit 18 pointsg jerry Wall got 14. Lowell Littaritz and Paul Wall took the vacant spots in the starting quintet for the remaining games. WASHINGTON: West rolled Washington into the ground and won 67 to 57. Netzel got 28 points and Paul Wall 14. BAY VIEW: The game started as last year's upset did when Bay View defeated West in a slow possession game. But West didn't want all this to happen again, so the Redmen rallied and crushed the Bays' hopes by a score of 67-46. Netzel was high again with 28 points. EAST: The victory hungry Redmen chewed up East 58 to 55 with Netzel pacing the way with 25 points. l.lNCOLN: West mopped up the floor at the Lincoln gym with the Lincoln team before a capacity crowd of 1200 fans. Leading all the way, West scored 56 points to Lincoln's 56. Netzel was high with 25. PULASKI: The game that matched the terrific height of Pulaski against the accuracy and good play of the Redmen proved to be the seasons show down. Russ Wittberger led Pulaski with 28 points. Netzel had 20 points for West. The hnal score was 52-56 in favor of Pulaski. The sports provided for every girl are volleyball, baseball, basketball, bad- minton, table tennis, and also track. Both freshmen and upper classmen are welcome to join GAA. The outstanding players of the year are Clara Stack, Pat Kinzer, Ruth Nero, Audrey Burneleit, Corinne Hanke, and Lois Sinky. Audrey and Corinne are mid-semester gradu- ates of '5l. All these athletes have received their third award, which is a sterling silver charm bracelet with GAA as charms. These proud owners of two letters and a bracelet received their awards in early june. Miss Peters, director of sports, was very pleased with the way the girls went into bas- ketball this year. She remarked that they played according to the rules especially well. The girls know that sportsmanship is the aim of all participaters. 76 SECOND AWARD WINNERS C. Olson L. Hausman N. Stout B. Bisset Get a locker in Lovers' Lane today. QQXX CHEERLEADERS Fmuf: L. With General MHCAfIhUf'S return to our city, new prominence was given our school. With proud hearts, we who belong to West, stood in the midst of the ex- cited throng waiting for a glimpse of our great predecessor. Our school band was stationed in a place of honor in MacArthur Square. We depended on them to let the General know the enthusiasm that West feels for him. As the day closed, a day to be remem- bered - we silently watched the great plane carrying MacArthur back to New York.
