J 81 No flowery road WEST 7 - TECH 19 XVhen the 1949 Redmen football team made their debut, a feeling of dejection resulted as West dropped their opener to a hard running and most spirited, Tech eleven. Tech, the under' dog, marched from the West thirtyfthree yard line to the first of three touchdowns to topple the boys from Highland. The Redmen came back, however, in the second quarter to score and lead at the end of the half 716 by a pass from joe Peters to Will Burneleit. The lead at the half was short lived, however, as the Boilermakers con' trolled the ball most of the second half and rolled over a desperately opposing West eleven to clinch thc game. WEST 14 - CUSTER 7 Bouncing back from the Tech defeat, West Redmen beat Custer, and won their first game for the West fans. joe Peters, holding quarter' back spot, put on a great passing exhibition and had Custer's boys baffled as he threw the pig' skin all over the field, completing 13 out of 18 passes, which were good for 194 yards and ref sulted in both of West's touchdowns. WEST 6 - KING 29 Championship hopes were darkened for the West gridders as they dropped their second game out of three to the Rufus King Generals. Favored to win against King, the Redmen came out on the short end of the score. Without the passing of joe Peters and with a long list of injuries, things looked bad for Gerboth's boys. The Red' men held the Generals to a seefsaw battle and almost scored in the beginning of the game. How' ever, the King barrage was too much for the Redmen and they scored near the end of the half. They finally overwhelmed the hardffighting West team in the last two quarters. WEST 7 MNORTH 21 Although the Redmen played a good game, they fell under the North attack and its terrific runner Jimmie King. After a hardffought first half it was still anyone's game, but King helped put North ahead, and they led l4f7 at the half. Our lone score was made near the end of the half when halffback Ray Kreckler captured a North aerial on the North 25 and carried the ball back to their one. In spite of a fast and aggressive West ground attack, the hoys from Highland were trounced hy Lin' coln's speedy attack. Un the ground, West was superior in gaining 15 first downs to Lincoln's 5. hut Lincoln, spurred on hy the fine play of llus Vergetis, overwhelmed the Redmcn. West finally did come through to score twice in the last period. The expert tutoring of Erv Gerber, West's coach, eomhined with the tallest gang of has' keteers in nineteen seasons, brought us our first undisputed haskethall championship since hasketf hall returned to the City conference in 1931. The last West championship team was the 1938 team which tied Lincoln for the title. Displaying fine hall handling, good rebounding, plus all around poise and shooting ability, we finished the season with a 1Of1 conference rec- ord, and without ever having a home floor acl' vantage. Teamwork was the major factor this season with no individual big wheels but a hard fighting, sharp quintet that always showed the determination to win. After winning the City Conference title, we went on to heat Pulaski and Vyfashington in the postfseason playfoffs and make a clean sweep. Our Hnal record, including nonfconference and playfoff games, was 130. Our hats go off to Coach Gerber and the '49f5O champions. We're proud of them!! That theme takes in a lot of territory, the topic is daring and audacious. When radar waves are made to bounce off distant planets and return to us almost instantly, the universe has grown smaller. And when we see in the energy and motion of a tiny atom the duplicate of the system of planets, and stars, our amazement leads us to faith. The poet's dream about a flower in the crannied wall is true prophecy. Science and democracy are two words frequently met in our way of life. In our scientific age, we know that unshakeable truth must be established. A scientist arrives at his convictions by definite prin' ciples and he defends these convictions. But he is always openfminded to new evidence. The essence of democracy is more elusive. Democracy does not yet have all the answers, it strug' gles to improve, but in a wasteful trial and error way. General principles of progress in this field are hard to establish, however, they exist and we must find them. As teamfmates in service to our school, can we not make our friendships, our ideals, our mutual understandings, the basis for the establishment of such principles in democracy?
