SHAKESPE1-XRE'S PIN-UP GIRLS REPORT OF THE ENGLISH FANS That old witch makes me sick! She makes us read that old Lady of the Lake , I mean the I-Iag of the Swamp. I hate that dry Shakespeare stuff. Why do we have to read it? What good will it do me? That was a swell synopsis that I found on the flap of the book I was supposed to read for a book report. I didn't really read it. All I did was copy that synopsis and hand it in as my book report. Everyone thought I'd read it. Boy! Did I put it over teacher, and my grade was 95! !! I love the literature, but I can't bear that grammar. As far as I'm concerned, there can be a comma after every word in the sentence! I like the grammar, but I find the literature ex- tremely dry. Oh, I think they're both swell! I find grammar very helpful, and the literature so interesting. For myself I prefer a comic book in preference to those insipid essays and impossible poetry. I think the biography is simply overflowing with interest. Come on, genius! lt's time to go to English class. Now for forty-five minutes of complete boredom. Not for me! I'm glad when it's time for Eng- lish! ll - I. Redmond H. Daley E. Hoyer A. Lange V. Mowry B. Goes R. Heinemann O. Rognlien P. Siljan H. Thomas M. Patti F. Pulver 'I 8

The task of our educational system during the past seventy-five years has been generally well performed, even though many inequalities and some irregularity existed. Proof of this performance is evident in the size and success of our war effort. The greatest factor in helping to develop the concept of a society for which we were willing to make any sacrifices was our system of free public education, which furnished us with the techniques and skills necessary to solve the practical problems of organization and production which war unexpectedly thrust upon us. During the period of readjustment which we face, there will be more variables in the educational equation, more unknowns. To solve the equation, the educational system must be more resilient, more fearless in leadership and action. lt cannot meet its responsibility if it fails to break down certain inflexibilities which now exist. One inflexibility of the educational system is the continuation on too wide a scale of a tendency to stamp a standardized pattern upon everyone. A mass production approach to education has developed. However, the potential contribution to society of our young people cannot be measured in terms of their ability to conform to a standardized pattern. A factory like educational organization costs less financially, but is wasteful of human resources because it does not fully develop the individual person for the benefit of our democratic society. Scheaffer M Shields S Z19l1I1Sk1 Dear Faculty, We sincerely thank you for our present positions: for it was through your patient teaching that we obtained our knowledge of the business world and how to do the jobs related to it. You may not have given us hints to pre- vent our falling off the boss's knee, but junior business training acquainted us with business fundamentals. Later, even if Kil- roy did get into our accounts, We mastered book-keeping. ln office practice, We learned how to operate several compli- cated machines. Our fingers were trained to work harmoniously with our minds in typing class. After taking salesmanship, We thought we could sell refrigerators to Eskimos-or at least dictionaries to people who can read. Perhaps We didn't become super salesmen, but we did sell ourselves to the employment agencies. We want to thank you again for your kind aid and guidance during our four years at West. Very truly yours, Commercial Graduates of '47 'nw 5 I
