P age 121 3 The 196.8 Coalagra is Dedicated To The Memory of George Metzler HE LEFT A LIGHT The memory of a bright eyed boy, eager to take on the problems of life. It is heartening to contemplate that George has left the Light of a friendly smile, of a hearty laugh, of a warm handclasp, of a word of cheer, of the gift of love and understanding, the Light of his presence because he passed this way. How wonderful that the life he lived, the friendships he made, and the deeds he has done can truly make us say, He left a lightly There is no flock, however watched and tended, But one dead lamb is there, There is no fireside, howsoier defended, Has but one vacant chair. An annual activity of the FHA is the essay contest in which the winner receives 85.00 and has her essay placed in state competition. This year's composition was titled, The Time Is Now. In February, all tenth, eleventh, and twelfth grade girls attended an FHA sponsored program, Tape Measure Fashionsf' Judy Lytle represented WDHS as a participant in the high school fashion show sponsored by Joseph Horne Company. An annual Sth grade orientation was held to describe the home ec classes in order to help the 8th grade girls decide whether they wanted to continue with the home ec course. All in all the FHA had an industrious year. 'K . . . and what the heck do you think you're doing! Our Future Homemakers! 58 Future Teachers It was another busy year for the Future Teachers of America. At the formal initiation, held in December, Mr. Graff, guest speaker, gave an informative talk entitled Why Teach?', Throughout the school year FTA members were called on to watch classes for our busy teachers. FTA members started their financial campaign by selling Mason candies. Funds raised were used to finance a field trip and a scholarship for a Senior FTA member. The year ended with an enjoyable field trip to Grove City College. Speaking of teachers . . . one topic that Mr. Graff, guest speaker at FTA initiation, knows much about. FTA officers, seated left to right are: Richard Pysh, president, and Jan Furer, vice-president. Standing left to right are Nancy Jackson, historiang Linda Meder, treasurerg Miss Judith Benecki, faculty advisor and Barb Reiber, secretary. Take a gander at our future teachers! l 59 FNA One of the most energetic clubs of the '67-,68 term was the Future Nurses of Amer- ica. Its purpose it to promote a better under- standing of the nursing career. A formal initiation was held in early December with Mrs. Janice Cunningham, a former WD stu- dent and now a registered nurse, as guest speaker. The FNA participated in many activities this year. Mr. Reese from Valley View Nursing Home spoke to FNA members, at a special meeting, and stressed the many dif- ferent types of medical careers. Also, Miss Guerierri, a former WD student and now a teacher at Citizens General Hospital, spoke to F NA members on student nurse life. The FNA held a hat show and salad smorgasbord to raise money for their scholarship fund. The winner of the best essay on What is a Good Nurse? received the scholarship. This year's winner was Carolyn Miller. FNA members made Christmas a little bit brighter for the orphans at Mars UP Home with toys and goodies. They also made their annual visit to St. Anthony's Home and en- tertained the children with a program of song and games, FNA members particularly enjoyed their two field trips to St. Francis Hospital in Pittsburgh and Butler Memorial Hospital, Butler. Standing, left to right: Steve Fields, treasurerg Mr. Richard Sekanick, faculty advisor and Cheryl Cassidy, secretary. Hustle is the word to describe the '67-T38 Student Coun- cil. Beginning his first year as SC faculty advisor was Mr. ichard Sekanick. His main purpose was to re-activate and e-organize the Student Council into an influential student organization. One of their first official duties was taking charge of the clean-up for Open House. SC members also acted as guides for this event. Another project was to present a news letter to the servicemen of our community. With the hopes of someday having another foreign exchange stu- dent, the Student Council sponsored and AFS Day at WD. West Deer students met and heard foreign exchange stu- dents from Cermany, Brazil, Uraguay, and Peru. The needy families of the township werenlt forgotten this year during the Christmas season-Tiny Tim. Student Council fund-raising activities included the selling of WD sweat shirts and T-shirts and the spon- soring of the WD-Leechburg after game dance. The young leaders began collecting old but usuable clothes for the poor people of the Appalachia area. Their main event was the orientation day held for the 6th graders. Selling of WD sweatshirts and T-shirts added funds to their treasury. Certainly after a year of helpful and energetic activities the Junior High Student Council will be ready to lead their fellow classmates in the Senior High Council. Spanish Club Mid-semester of the 1967-68 school term marked the reorganization of the West Deer Township High School Spanish Club. Since that time, the Spanish Club has taken its position as one of the most active organiza- tions in the school. The first official step taken by the students was the drafting of the con- stitution. Once this was done by the commit- tee, the officers were elected and a strenuous activities, schedule was outlined. In March, the first formal program spon- sored by the Spanish Club was presented. A Brazilian foreign exchange student presented some of his many slides of his native South American country, and afterwards answered questions from the audience. In May, as a ,special orientation program, the Spanish Club presented to the junior high students, in colaboration with the band, a medley of well- known fairy tales done in the Spanish language. As a result of the diligence and the stamina of the players, this brought forth the greatest upset of the year our victory over unbeaten Leechburg, which broke a 23 game winning streak by the score 7-0. The initiatives of the Braves, not score-wise, but in the number of downs, total yards gained by rushing and in the powerful blocking of the Braves, proved valuable in the games that followed. The spirit and the willingness to win in the players was evident. This brought forth the talents of the underclass- men which netted the coaching staff 12 lettermen, 7 ol which are double lettermen. The student body expressed their thanks to the coaches and players by attending the games and giving the tealr the extra initiative to play heads-up ball. The players showed their appreciation to the coaching staff by pre- senting them with a trophy at the final pep rally. West Deer was honored by having four of their out- standing players named to the second team of the A.I.C These players were seniors: Rich Lamperski, Glenn Piper and juniors: Barry Maciak and Gary Smith. Glenn Pipe was also honored, by the Valley Daily News, as the Mosll Valuable Player on the West Deer team. Much thank. goes to the Braves managers, for without their help ill would be impossible to maintain a team. In memory of Mr. James Kuhns, who passed away th day before the Leechburg game, the Braves dedicate their win over Leechburg to his memory, as he was a grea supporter of the team. Larry Kuhns, through all his hardJ ship, was there with his team to carry out the important job as head manager. RISK- 2 QE .Nw xi Bouncing Braves of 68 Under the capable leadership of Coach Donald DiMarco, the West Deer Braves finished with a winning season and a 12-10 record. All through the season the team faced over-sized op- ponents, yet showed magnificent ability and fortitude. Perhaps the greatest moment occurred when the Braves upset Freeport's title hopes by defeating the Yellowjackets 67-75. It was a well-played game. with neither team able to move ahead by more than nine points. West Deer's Pinky Victain scored 26 points and snared 21 rebounds. Butch Latronica pulled down 20 rebounds before fouling out. Joe Catanese played an excellent floor game and hit on 8 of 15 from the field. Glenn Piper did a superb de- fensive job on Freeportis holding him to a mere 8 points, well under his seasonis average. Much credit must also be given to Don Stalker and Phil Furer who filled in for the injured John Sobran. February 20 was Parents, Night and before the start of the Braves game with East Deer, the senior basketball players gave flowers to their mothers. The Braves then went on to slaughter East Deer, 81-59. The game marked the first appearance of big Nick Hromika since he was side-lined early in the season with a knee injury. His basket brought the biggest roar from the crowd. Another highlight of this year's season was the tough fight WD gave Tarentum in a game played here at WD. Although we suffered a loss, the team showed outstanding teamwork. It was at the free throws line that Tarentum won the contest. Individual scoring honors went to John Sobran, who bagged 23 points in the game. Individual rebounding honors went to Butch Latronica, who grabbed off 21. Pink Victain got 14 points and 14 rebounds. Tarentum had a definite height advantage but in hustling, speed, and overall team play, West Deer clearly outclassed the Redcats. Unflerestimaterl Shelestak dribbles through East Deer line. West Deer Braves possessed the qualities of a winning team this season, namely, a good coaching staff, fine players, teamwork determination and hustle. Coaches Mickey Vitkay and Richard! Sekanick expressed their belief that the team displayed some of the best brand of baseball ever played on the WD diamond. This opinion was shared by the team and student body. The West Deert nine was not able to coordinate hitting and throwing well enough to fool opposing teams, although they were able to finish with a 4 wins and 3 losses season. The team had record-breaking pitching and catching staffs this season, a source of pride for all. Leading pitcher was Joe Catanese and leading catcher, Jerry Shelestak. Batters deserving recognition were John Sobran and Jerry Shelestak. There were eight Seniors on the team this season, whose talents will be missed. Friendships now and ever With those who have cared. Remembering arties, The games andl our play, Our prom with its glories Senior Picnic day. If ever we remember The moments with our best friends, will they last forever When school days shall end? Weill think of those glories, We'll go on our way We'll live with our mem'ries Graduation day. And when we leave you, hoping, Trying our very best And on graduation day We'll know we passed the test.
